The Postal Service – The District Sleeps Alone Tonight Lyrics 18 years ago
"I am a visitor here: I am not permanent"
This particular line strikes me, as I'm sure it struck many of you too. Taken completely out of the context of the song, one can use this to apply to living in general. Being alive on this Earth.. We're all visitors.. and no one is permanent.

And in this form, these words speak a lot to me. Even though the "intended meaning" or the "most commonly perceived meaning" escapes me.. This line strikes a particular inner chord of my being, and made an already appealing song even more so appealing.

Iron & Wine – Someday the Waves Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm not quite sure about this one.. I'm surprised there aren't any comments; I've really taken a liking to this song as of late.

"Time like your cheek has turned from me"
Hmm.. "Turning the other cheek" is a form a nonviolent resistance, and he is saying "Time" has turned similarly.. so both time and this woman are offering him the chance to resist nonviolently, and he decides for her to pick a place, and to be there. I suppose he's just waiting peacefully for this girl, and not reacting in a violent manner, and just being full of acceptance?

I suppose. Great song though.

The Flaming Lips – Do You Realize?? Lyrics 19 years ago
What a line.. "Do you realize that everyone you know, someday, will die" .. Walking around campus while I heard that and saw the hundreds of people and thinking about it..

It's sort of scary knowing that everyone, everywhere.. will face death without really knowing what death will ever mean. Everyone who has ever lived, and will ever live.. will never know.. yet its something we all must face in the end.

Iron & Wine – The Trapeze Swinger Lyrics 19 years ago
Okay.. this is mostly a composite of a lot of other interpretations, but this one will be quick.

I think it's about this man, who has had a childhood friend (a woman, obviously) and their friendship is long and rewarding. Throughout the frienship, the man develops strong intimate feelings for the woman, but she doesn't feel the same.

I believe he is already dead ("the parking lot had an element of danger"), and continues to say "Please, remember me" to his lifelong friend.. not for the time he tried to get close to her sexually ("seldomly"), but for all the other good times they shared.. on Halloween, and when they were children trying to save up money to run away in the beginning ("happily").

The "Trapeze Swingers" are all of us, living in our world. "The Trapeze act was wonderful, but was never meant to last" = just like life. "All around the frightened trapeze swingers". His picture portrays all the things we believe in, which surround us in our lives.. in which we're all just frightened. "A fleeting chance to see, A trapeze, Swing as high as any savior" This one is a tad more difficult, but I believe it to stand for the chance in each of our own lives to see our own "truth" (or savior). Our chance to make the best of ourselves, but it's only a chance.. because since the day we've been alive we're dying. ("A fleeting chance")

All the mentions of the "pearly gates" is referring to the fact that he's dead, but is yet to make it to heaven, still undecided by outside forces if he will make it there. And his final struggle ("Please, remember me, finally") is his crawl to the gates and for him to portray the beauty he sees in the world of life. He understands he hasn't lived the most honorable life, and that he was scared ("frightened trapeze swingers"), and that he was always struggling ("uphill crawling"). but he wants to be remembered at last for his recognition of the beautiful and flawed world we all live in, and that everyone lives in their own "world".. we're all doing our own trapeze acts.. we're all trapeze swingers.

Maybe not as short as I thought.. but this is what I enjoy thinking about when I listen to this song.

This version is so hot. Steel Train rocks it. I think it means he wants a girl back.

Iron & Wine – The Trapeze Swinger Lyrics 19 years ago
The most poetic lyrcis of a song I've heard in a long time.. refreshing, and sweet.. I've been listening to this one (and Upwards over the Mountain) and just can't wait to go home for the weekend and cry in my mom's arms. I need to..

One of my best and closest friends is getting into a relationship with my most recent girlfriend (who lives down the hall in my college dorm; we broke up before the summer but were still very close) and it's been more difficult than I thought... Thanks Iron and Wine for giving me these two songs to help cope.. I can't wait to go home and cry..

Iron & Wine – Upward Over the Mountain Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with Trivian as well.. It's a sad world we live in, and as a male, I'll never understand how a mother feels.. bearing children, and creating life. The overwhelming need to protect one's young from a world that won't allow full protection.. a world where sons must learn on their own, despite the mother's undying devotion to the safety and security of their child. This song has awakened a new found respect that I have for my mom, and has brought me to tears I'm saving for the next time I see her. Thanks Iron & Wine, and thank you Trivian for your interpretation. Peace and love..
