I haven't heard the original by Dire Straits yet, but I can't wait to see how it compares. I think the Indigo Girls version sets the standard pretty high. |

I love The Killers to death, but I heard this cover after I heard the Indigo Girls version. I'm sorry, but there's just no comparison. The Indigo Girls put so much passion into the lyrics, so much power, it's nearly theatrical. I haven't been able to download the original by Dire Straits, so I don't know how it sounds. I had high hopes for The Killers cover, but I think the Indigo Girls set the standard pretty high. |

I would think the reference to "rainbows in the dark" comes from the Dio song "Rainbow in the Dark". Might not be a punk record though (more like metal), but it makes sense to me. |

I used to think it was about rape/abuse and all that but now I think it's more about self-destruction. Like the old man is age, or leading her to alcohol or drugs (more specifically heroin "her veins are all showing") and she wants to get out of it and kills herself. Or something like that.... |

I'm not sure if this is what it really means, but I heard someone interpret it as being about professional modelling. About how your body changes and it sucks but you can't help it. And it kind of explains the refrain. "Shoot me from my good side", "cut a piece that's bite-size" being small portions for anorexics. That's the way I like to interpret it. |
