| i agree that olp, since happiness, has definitely become more mainstream. however, i believe that raine's voice will forever maintain the unique sound of the band. this new album is a perfect example of that. sure, some of the songs definitely have a "bob rock" influence, but listen to this song or apology or even angels losing sleep and the range of raine's voice is amazing. i love it. | |

funny thing is, before i'd actually looked at what the lyrics were (sorry but sometimes Thom is impossible to understand) I thought this song was so calm and relaxing: made me feel really peaceful. i told this to another radiohead fan who then gave me a weird look and asked if i knew what the song was about. i proceeded to look at the lyrics and realized how creepy this really is.... oddly enough it still makes me feel calm: i guess psychos just have that effect on me :P btw, to anyone who has not seen the band live, i highly recommend it - i'd barely listened to them until i went to the concert and now i'm a huge fan! |

Regardless of what the song means, it was beautifully written and sung (the live piano version of it at their concert back in 97? was amazing). One of my personal favs. All I know is that you can feel the desperation and sadness of Julia's life, it's undeniable. ...but that's just what I think :) |

This is one of my fav OLP songs, and I agree that it definitely has to do with the futility of living in the modern world (especially with the references to the destruction of phones and tv's) and the desire to escape and find something with meaning. Technology and advancements promised us knowledge and answers but rather it has tried to stifle out minds. While our "wheels keep turning" they (society/technology/God, what have you) have denied us what our minds most desire: understanding. Also, I like Bobgreg's interpretation of the song as being linked to religion. I'd never really looked at it that way before but now I definitely see religious connections. With our "souls tied" to a religion that has not lived up to its promises of answering "questions, locked up inside", we feel like blind followers who've been lied to our whole lives. ...but that's just what I think. Great song. Can't wait till the new album at the end of the month. |
