| Bright Eyes – Napoleon's Hat Lyrics | 20 years ago |

This song is very beautiful and moving. Stating the obvious, I know, but Napoleon is Napoleon Bonaparte whose role in the Louisiana Purchase played a major part in the history of New Orleans. He was said to be very short, hence the platform shoes. I've listened to the first line of the third verse, and the closest I can get is: "Doctor Oppenheimer winced, he felt the broken piece of his pacemaker" I know the Doctor Oppenheimer part is correct, I just don't know what comes after that. Maybe once someone gets the actual cd, the jacket will have the lyrics. |

If you read here http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/_/id/5933642?rnd=1114701660141&has-player=true : He (Conor) says he spent a few years not caring about consequences, drinking too much and taking whatever drugs anyone gave him. Then, on December 17th, 2000, he consumed a whole magnum of Jameson's whiskey in Chicago. The next day, he went through alcohol withdrawal, and his heartbeat was like a hummingbird's. He checked into a hospital for four days. I'm pretty sure that's what the incident in the song refers to. |

Just to add facts to speculation about his cousins. From http://www.timmcmahan.com/skinny.htm: A sizable chunk of Saddle Creek Records' stable of bands will be performing together April 21, including Desaparecidos, a new rock project consisting of members of Bright Eyes and The Good Life. The event is a benefit concert for the family Collin McElroy, the brother of Bright Eyes/Desaparecidos band member Ian McElroy and cousin to Bright Eye's leader Conor Oberst. Collin committed suicide March 26; he was 24 years old. Money raised will be used to cover his funeral expenses. |
