Counting Crows – Anna Begins Lyrics 19 years ago
This is the best song by CC and probably one of the best ever, at least in my book.

But I was curious as to anyone's opinions on this part of the song:
"But I'm sure there's something in a shade of grey,
Something in between,
And I can always change my name
If that's what you mean"

Most interpretations seem to be quite general here, none very specific.

Radiohead – Like Spinning Plates Lyrics 20 years ago
This song reminds me of the film Hotel Rwanda. Like it's being sung from the perspectvie of a Rwandan and the second person (you) in the song are the Americans or British (the white superpowers who did nothing to stop the slaughter). It really fits quite nicely with the lyrics if you think about it:

"While you make pretty speeches
I'm being cut to shreds
You feed me to the lions
A delicate balance"

People talk about doing things, and they gloss over and sugar coat what's going on. Therefore it's as if they themselves, in their ignorance, were 'feeding to the lions' other people.

"And this just feels like spinnin' plates
I'm livin' in cloud cuckoo land
And this just feels like spinnin' plates
My body's floatin' down the muddy river"

And it never stops and no one does anything. My body's floating down a river and no one cares. No one again meaning the Americans or the British or whatever other powers could have stepped in but didn't.

Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah Lyrics 20 years ago
Are there any good covers of this song containing the lyrics above? The whole ' you say i sung the name in vain' verse and the one with the 'i'll stand before the lord of song' verse? I'm trying to find a cover because i really like these lyrics but i hate listening to cohen's orignal verses. the guy was a great lyricist, but singer? not so much...
and i totally agree with the person above me.

Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 20 years ago
Ok, this is an interpretation I heard and some of it I agree with, some of it I don't. But it's interesting so I thought I'd share.

Ok, so the whole song deals with 2 stories-- a romantic relationship, and religious/spiritual problems of King David primarily, but varies a bit. So verse by verse...

I heard there was a secret chord
That david played and it pleased the lord
But you don't really care for music, do you
Well it goes like this the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing hallelujah

-- This one's pretty unified and clear, it's about David and his lyre and how God favored David. The girl however, in teh relationship POV, doesn't care for music-- that is, whatever it is the guy may be so great at, whatever his best quality may be, it's not something that matters to her anyway.

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the hallelujah

This is David's downfall as he is seduced by Bathsheba and she in effect ruins him. She is the beginning of his slow, painful downful. The hallelujah is like David's connection to God and the sin he commits by Bathsheba severs the connections. She takes the hallelujah from him. The breaking of the throne and cutting of the hair symbolize the fall from power. This verse can be connected to a relationship, but seems more religious, while the next verse focuses more on the relationship.

Baby i've been here before
I've seen this room and i've walked this floor
I used to live alone before i knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
But love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

This is a guy telling the girl that he knows her, he loves her, but love isn't easy. Perhaps they've broken up and he wants her back. It can also be interpreted as man without God "I used to live alone before I knew you" could be referring to God and how without God one is alone.

Well there was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do you
But remember when i moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah

Now this refers to, obviously, sex on one level which I don't think needs elaborating. On the second level it ould be God talking to David-- saying there was a time when you were with me, when you were faithful, you would pray (let me know what's going on below= tell me of your troubles). When the spirit of God is in David, everything is peaceful and joyous. The 'holy dove' could be interpreted as a symbol of peace in this context, as well as the every breath we drew was hallelujah-- all was peaceful and joyous.

Well, maybe there's a god above
But all i've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
It's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

This verse is pretty simple I think. Just saying that love and faith can mean different things, but are ultimately the same. They can be good or hurtful but no one cand define them. David's faith has been shaken and he doesn't know what exactly to beloeve, but he knows how to live and he'll keep on doing that.

Ok, so that's it. Now I'm fairly familir with the David story and this doesn't really match up all the time, particularly the laas verse, imo. But whatever... Just thought y'all like to hear it, it's an interesting interpretation.

I love it when he sings 'your flesh is so' really high... at about 48 seconds into the song...

Jeff Buckley – Everybody Here Wants You Lyrics 20 years ago
This song took a little longer to grow on me... it sounded too standard-- and I mean standard everyone, not standard Buckley-- It seemed lame and contrived. But it really is quite beautiful. His singing certainly is excellent here. It's not one of his bests, obviously, but it's great.

Radiohead – I Am a Wicked Child Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree with joeymoose, this song isn't very pro-Christian, to say the least. I'm pretty sure it's "to radiate his lie"

Lifehouse – Walking Away Lyrics 20 years ago
This song sounds to me like it's about his father leaving. I think it's from the son's POV.

"The sun goes down as the city lights
Pave their way through the darkest night
Raindrops fall as an old man cries
Never thought to ever think twice
Of all he had
Of all he lost
A selfish life, I guess, comes with the cost"

--This sets the scene and shows an old man remembering what he had (a family) and lost (by leaving). Whatever reasons he left for seem worthless now.

"Hey, remember me?
I remember you walking away

Hey, remember me?
I remember you walking away"

--This is like he's seeing his son again for the first time either he's asking the son if he remembers him-- to which the son answers 'i remember you walking away" or it's entirely the son, asking if the dad remembers him, because he remembers his father...walking away.

"Te same old street, just a different name
Same old house, just the family's changed
Picket fence, the windows stained
Freedom spelt by a man in chains
The silence is all we have to give
And the memories of a life I wish we'd lived"

--This verse shows the home they used to live in, perhaps. And all the memories that house represents. It represents the life they didn't get to live.

Hey, remember me?
I remember you walking away

Hey, remember me?
I remember you walking away
From all that you made
That you lost or threw away
Trade it in for a brand new life
But I can't, can't let go
Can't turn around
Hold my head high and walk away

-- Here, the son can't forgive hs father for leaving, so he gives the old man a taste of his own medicine.
