| like some said before, this song is far from depressing. a lot of people are scared of death because they see it as the end is the end is the end; by repeating the line "don't you weep", i think conor is saying that there's nothing to regret in death. i'm starting to think that the "century of pointing guns at anything that moves" is more of a reference to the violent/paranoid nature of man always being in existance rather than being literally about the war, and hearing the "crowd count down till the bomb gets dropped" as the way we all sort of anticipate the next step in our lives, especially death, rather than live in the moment we're in. i like the hint of sarcasm in "don't be a criminal in this police state"; it's kind of like you can be thinking all of these existential thoughts but society is caught up in groceries and the stock market, and anyone that doesn't seem concerned with making money is an outcast; a criminal. the one part of this song that really hit home to me: "i've got some friends i barely see. but we're all planning to meet, we'll lay in bags as dead as leaves; all together for eternity". i tend to get hung up over losing touch with people that i care about, and to say so simply that it almost doesn't matter since we're all brought together because we're destined to die was really clever. | |
