First of all this song reminds me of a mirror maze. When you first hear it it seems like they're trying to say a thousand different things and they are all reflecting off each other until they dissolve into nothing, but that is exactly the piont they are trying to make about television. I think that the song is telling us that we all have to find our own way out of the maze and have to stop relying on other peoples interpretations and ideals to guide us through it. |

The story of this song is pretty obvious: A goverment worker gets seduced by a woman who convinces him to bring her secret goverment documents, but she gets caught. then he convinces a beauraucrat to 'secret you away' and she dissappears forever. but i love this song because of how it gives that desperate obsession that the singer felt for his seductress and you can just feel his complete devotion even tho she doesnt care for him at all. thats why i listen to The Decemberists; for the emotions they project. |

| I think that the singer in the song is still very confused as to what he believes is going to happen after death, and so he is asking his friend who he would normally turn to for advice, but who is now dead not to forget him and to help him sift through all of the different religious and scientific answers out there to find the truth -- "Can't you stop the lies falling from the skies" -- but I dont understand the part about his conscience being clear. | |
