i love this song sooooo much. it made me cry one foggy day. matt k, your analysis is brilliant, i totally agree with you except on the part about eleanor knowing the priest. i thought it was just about two lonely people whose lives entertwined at some point. (At the end for eleanor.) i think it's a wonderful song about loneliness. that's it. that's the point. |

i fell IN LOVE with the song the moment i heard it. it's so romantic and full of good old fashioned charm. So many people want relationships but they forget the true meaning of love and caring for loved ones. this song really reminds me of the Andy Griffith show, where everything's simple and romanticized. Note, paul mcCartney doesn't mension taxes, diseases, or natural disasters at all. i know, how come americans can't write songs like these? |

first of all , prilla you are so right. i cant agree with you more. just try to love people. everything is trivial in this world except love and merry holdwine, i think the french revolution song is there sarcastically, reminding people that bloodshed is so unnecessary and we just end up hurting ourselves. i love this song. it's so simple and to the point. and oh yeah, is every one here British or something, because I see a generous use of words like "bloody", "cheers" and stuff that confuses americans. aka me. so yeah, it'll be cool if someone explained these words to me.... |

you know how a lot of ppl are talking about the trilogy of Jenny's murder? u know "jenny was a friend of mine", "midnight show", "leave the bourbon on the shelf" well, this is sorta like the prequel because the "jenny" songs are about a girl murdered because of jealousy, and this is about his jealousy, his motive, how i interpret the song, line by line (i know it's long, but it's interesting to read).. I’m coming out of my cage ..... HE'S REFERRING TO HIS STATE OF MIND AS A CAGE BECAUSE HE TRAPS HIMSELF EVERYTIME HE GETS JEALOUS. I THINK HE'S BEEN THIS SUSPICIOUS OF A PREVIOUS GIRLFRIEND'S INFIDELITY, AND AFTER THE LONG GONE RELATIONSHIP HE IS FINALLY SNAPPING OUT OF IT. I totally agree with the previous comment. this song is NOT LITERAL. It's about love and a girl who seems to be an innocent angel, but he finds out she plays with people's feelings, and even though he knows, he can't get over her. THe song obviously has a lot of symbolism. If this song really is about a girlfriend dying than how do you explain: "she just can't stop telling lies" or "she's got a criminal mind" and it can't be because she's really a criminal, because if you read the lyrics, you find the main theme is about love, not really about her criminal records . |

wow, i love songs with lyrics that are a lot deeper and more meaningful than the on the surface. songs now days are always about getting a girl or guy and it gets really monotonous. now i know the historical part and it's even more interesting than i first thought. o yeah, terminusost, i see what u mean. it could be for both of them |

i know someone that's mormon, and multiple wives got outlawed AGES ago. And in an interview, he said it's from a male perspective but NOT his own. also, he laughs at the rumors that his gay/bi, but he says it's not a bad thing that people are confused (maybe he doesn't want crazy girl fans chasing after him all the time?) |
