The Mars Volta – Day Of The Baphomets Lyrics 19 years ago
Actually, Rexcore, Jesus is NOT described in ANY historical document written during the time in which he was supposed to have lived. The earliest references to him appeared as much as 50 years after his supposed death.

Speaking of his death...the Romans, who were among the greatest record keepers in history, have absolutely no record of anyone named Jesus ever being crusified, even though they clearly state that they executed several Jews who claimed to be the son of God.

"paint me that river, and would you only use blues?"

Not only are they telling you what to create, but how to create it.

Coheed and Cambria – The Willing Well III: Apollo II: The Telling Truth Lyrics 20 years ago
I am not entirely certain the the "precious little whore" is Josephine...

I am fairly sure that Coheed kills Mariah as well, so I suppose it could refer to her.

The Blood Brothers – Rats and Rats and Rats for Candy Lyrics 20 years ago
I think it's interesting that nobody has mentioned the line "you know that pity's got an ugly pricetag."

Candy is showing pity on the rats, and she pays for this with her life, as well as all of her belongings.

I don't think this song has anything to do with disease, at least not in the literal sence. I also doubt that Candy is a prostitute, or a slut, or anything other than a kind person who makes the mistake of showing pity on the wrong people (or in this case the wrong rodents).

After taking all that Candy has to offer them, the rats move on to find a new victim. Mr. Howell sees the rats riding a bicycle (he is not riding it) and they are screaming "we need a vacancy!" They are looking for someone else like Candy who will show pity on them and ultimately be consumed by them.

Vendetta Red – Shiver Lyrics 20 years ago
to me, it feels like the song is about a man being forced to perform oral sex on a woman (it's too late to keep your tongue from sliding round the scales of the snake) as she beats and eventually kills him (down on the floor, naked and sore, first you shiver, then you die).

the woman is most likely one of the SIsters (the cult created by Gloria).

Brazil – We Lyrics 20 years ago
I believe this song is a lamentation at the difficulties of maintaining interpersonal relationships in an increasingly electronic world. The opening line calls out "automation is a subtractive process" because it takes away from human connections. The plea for a sign of life and the belief of powerless also support this sentiment, as does the use of an equal sign instead of the word "is" to show that all things are affected by the march of circuitry.

This is a song about longing, love, and the way that we are all choked off by the surfeit of technology. It is a powerful song that is expertly written and flawlessly performed.

Coheed and Cambria – Always and Never Lyrics 20 years ago
I'm confused by GoodApolloImSteve's take on this song. Why would Jesse ask The Writer if he will catch Erica? Jesse doesn't even know that The Writer exists (well, he knows there is a "god" but not that it's just someone writing a story) and he doesn't know about Erica either. Jesse, as well as Claudio, Newo, Ambelina, Mayo, Chase, Josephine, and Patrick (just to name a few) are all characters in the story being written. None of them even know of the Writer's existence until Claudio discovers the mirror and bleeds the two worlds temporarily into one during The Willing Well I.

Coheed and Cambria – The Willing Well I: Fuel for the Feeding End Lyrics 20 years ago
I've been listening very closely, and now I am almost positive that he says "feliz de dia que hora" which means something along the lines of giving happiness to (or on) that hour. My spanish is very poor.

Coheed and Cambria – The Willing Well I: Fuel for the Feeding End Lyrics 20 years ago
I am pretty sure that this song (at least primarily) describes the battle between The Writer and The Crowing that takes place during the final pages of the graphic novel.

As for the section just after 'little maggot', I have been wondering what he says as well. Sadly, it is not included in the lyrics. It really does sound as though he is saying "que hora" at the end of the phrase. I'm not sure though, because he has been known to sing nonsense words, like in the end of Time Consumer, or more recently, coming out of the bridge of Crossing the Frame.

Coheed and Cambria – The Willing Well II: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree with strange brew. On the back of the album, the keywork is used to separate The Willing Well from Good Apollo. I'm fairly certain that they all deal with the story, but that The Willing Well deals with things from Claudio's (the character, not the singer) perspective rather than the Writer's (as the rest of the album does). I can't help but think that there is a reference to performing oral sex in the second segment of the song. "In the press of your back/do you feel the shore swell?/oh boy/I am eating my way back home" (by the way, those are the lyrics from the album's liner notes) The word 'press' is used extensively on this album, and it always refers to physical intimacy. For example, the chorus of Wake Up: "in the press of every kiss". I don't think it's unreasonable to think that press holds a similar meaning here.

Thursday – Asleep in the Chapel Lyrics 20 years ago
Geoff said on their website that the song was about being at home all alone with no power and wondering if perhaps there really was no god. He was hesitant to give up his faith altogether because he knew he could never get it back. Just before he abandoned everything, the power came back on and the clock was blinking. He said that at this point he stopped truly believing in god but will never stop hoping that there is something in the world beyond chemical reactions and pheremones.

Coheed and Cambria – Three Evils (Embodied in Love and Shadow) Lyrics 20 years ago
Actually, I believe Claudio only said that the "cool vocal effects" in In Keeping Secrets were just effects and not the Monstar talking. I don't think he said that none of the sounds mean anything.

I've always thought of the little scene at the end of Three Evils as Claudio being followed and subsequently surrounded by someone (possibly the red army, or maybe the priests). I feel that it is not a woman screaming but rather Claudio as he undergoes his transformation into the thing whose name Wilhelm Ryan would "dare not speak." I think that is why the scream carries over into The Crowing, which is either the name of his new form, or the event of his changing.

Coheed and Cambria – Cuts Marked in the March of Men Lyrics 20 years ago
I have always looked at this song as a love triangle between the girl, Chase, and two men who are not named in the song. Both men love Chase but she only has feelings for one of them.

The opposing army captures the object of her affections but not the unrequited lover, "we're coming home short." He knows that he can never have Chase, and decides that his life is therefore expendable. He trades himself for Chase's lover because, more than anything, he wants her to be happy, "here take me instead, I'd rather not see her off alone."

The "favor" being delivered in the bridge is the release of the captured man. The song's protagonist asks the enemy soldiers to send Chase's lover back to her, "deliver a favor to my love."

I don't yet know how this all fits into the main story, but this little tale is a sad and beautiful one on it's own.

The Mars Volta – L'Via L'Viaquez Lyrics 20 years ago
I've always felt that this song was about Cygnus' search for, and subsuquent conversation with L'via, his aunt. "Tu apellido se cambio," "your surname itself change" (I agree, it doesn't quite make sense literally translated). L'via has changed her name, most likely by marrying. This has made the process of finding her more difficult. However, Cygnus is determined, and he does eventually track her down.

When he does, she won't tell him what he wants to know. "Una historia sin mi madre" "a history without my mother." This sends Cygnus into a rage that culminates in the murder of L'via.

The Mars Volta – Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus Lyrics 20 years ago
In the second half of the final verse of "Umbilical Syllables," the "speaking" character, presumably Cygnus, says "umbilical syllables left to decode, there was no cradle i can taste it." The umbilical cord is the main anatomical device that connects mother to child during pregnancy. So, "umbilical syllables" could very well mean an explanation of Cygnus' connection to his mother. However, "left to decode" tells us that he has yet to receive the answers he craves. Although he has none of the facts, he is sure that he was not wanted and that his conception was by no means planned. This is made apparent by the following line: "there was no cradle i can taste it." "Taste" in this context meaning that he can simply feel that it is the truth. He needs no proof.

The Mars Volta – Cassandra Gemini Lyrics 20 years ago
My thought is that "I think I've become like one of the others" refers to Cygnus becoming a "woman". In Deloused in the Comatorium, Cerpin Taxt was at one point transformed into a woman by a man named Wolfram Tarant. I think "Tarantism" is a reference to that man, as well as being a reference to dancing, as was mentioned previously. The line "You'll wear the widow's weeds" seems to support my theory, as Cygnus appears to be borrowing the clothing of the woman with whom he is sleeping. I'm not sure what he is hoping to accomplish with this, but I believe it may have something to do with finding, and presumably killing, his father.

I also emphatically agree with the theory that the name Cassandra represents the prophet of doom from the legend of Troy. I believe that Cygnus chose this name for his new persona because he is "foreseeing" the downfall of those responsible for his suffering. Also, the name Gemini, besides being a constellation (and therefore a favorite reference of Cedric's (just look at the names of some of At the Drive In's songs)) refers to twins, which could mean that Cassandra is Cygnus' "twin" or alter ego.

The Mars Volta – Miranda, That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore Lyrics 20 years ago
I liked Voltafan and Thesongofainu's interpretations. I thought they were very well thought out. To me however, the line "I've always wanted to eat glass with you again" refers to talking about family. If one were literally to eat glass, blood would come from their mouth. Blood is a word commonly used to describe the common link between family members. So I interpret this opening line as Miranda saying to her grandson, "I always wanted to talk to you, and tell you everything. Everything about who you are, and who your mother was, and all about your family. I always wanted to, but I couldn't. They were always watching." "They" being members of the church, represented in the song by the noose.

I think that the title of this song is very telling, as the reference to a ghost being holy is, to me at least, a clear reference to religion, and therefore to the church.
