Taupin grew up in the English country, was an avid reader and became a very esoteric writer. His early lyrics, such as Tartan-coloured lady, A Dandelion Dies in the Wind are examples of his growing talent for word play and painting stories with rarely used words.... many of which he didn't know the meaning. Levon shows his ability to paint a lyrical story drawing on his steel-trap memory of what he has read and experienced, or at least dreamed of one day experiencing. Another example of this is his fascination with Americana (Tumbleweed Connection, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road). Most of the lyrics came from reading dime novels in his youth and from watching American TV shows. |

elton and bernie considered this their 'darkest period' and hence the album title "Blue Moves". Bernie was going through his divorce from his first wife....... the excesses of the 'do no wrong' years had begun to take their toll on elton and taupin and this album reflects that more than any other, lyrically and musically |

They were written seperately......
elton wrote the instrumental Funeral for a Friend, Gus Dudgeon decided that they should blend together, and guitarist Johnstone wrote a quick bridge riff that tied the two together perfectly....... it wasn't planned at all. Dudgeon laid out the synth intro in an all-nighter on a Korg mini-moog synth to lead into elton's piano. |

based on one of the many brawls that john reid started while elton's lover/manager in the early days........ there are several incidents of bad behavior, reid punching fans, reporters, etc. and elton once ended up in jail for a day for reid's assault on a photographer |

very true... on the way to The Chateau in France, the Jamaican army chased Elton and crew with machine guns to the airport.... saved one of elton's best albums from being another single record album produced quickly to keep up his contract with DJM... after going to France, the album became a double record album and the rest is history..... |
