Tom Petty – American Girl Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, she was an American girl.

The Velvet Underground – I Found A Reason Lyrics 18 years ago
I like this song. I find it has a very mo-town vibe with the harmonies. I can imagine this is a kind of parody of the songs that conquered the 50s.

The Righteous Brothers – You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' Lyrics 18 years ago
Every time I hear this song I want to jump up and sing it out loud. Especially in quiet places.

John Lennon – Nobody Loves You (When You're Down And Out) Lyrics 18 years ago
I first heard this song at night. It is the type of song that doesn't help me sleep.

John Lennon – Imagine Lyrics 19 years ago
I like the song, but like John said, its saccharine. The message is similar to "God" except now he is asking the rest of us to do it.
Oh, and does anybody but me feel that you have to have a pretty high horse to think someone cannot Imagine all that stuff

John Lennon – #9 Dream Lyrics 19 years ago
I like that thought, Jessica. It's like a dream where something important is said to you, but you cannot remember who told you or what the message was. All you have is the event.

"It's like singing 'Two of Us' with only John or Paul, but never both"

Iggy Pop – The Passenger Lyrics 19 years ago
I think the sentiment is very Camus. The whole idea that he sees how wonderful everything is once he relinquished control, became the passenger instead of the driver. Though he has no say in the destination, he is now able to take in all the sights of the world along the way.
"It doesn't take a degree to serve", that kind of mindset.
On a side note, the book Time Traveler's Wife mentions this song when the main character is doped out in a car. Neat scene.

Go rent Easy Rider starring Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda. Select the scene where they play this song. That's exactly what it means.

David Bowie – The Man Who Sold the World Lyrics 19 years ago
I always thought this song was about one's own persona. How at every instance of growth, we lose slightly the person we once were in order to become the person that we are. The second verse is about the current persona's trek into his past, and upon viewing the numerous personalities, hopes, and dreams he once had in the past, realizing that as his own humanity evolves, his current nature will fade just the the other. In effect, his memories will die alone, in what will seem like the the person, a long long time ago.

"She has robes and she has monkeys"
That makes the song for me.

The Rolling Stones – Sympathy for the Devil Lyrics 20 years ago
I saw them play this on "Gimme Shelter" in my History of Rock N' Roll class. When the Stones played this song as the crowd was being to become unstable. It stayed with me for a couple of days, the images of a guy shouting at Mick to stop the show, and Mick just dancing.
But to me, this song is very religious. In some text of the Bible when the Devil appears, God has respect for his role in the universe. What the song says to me is that someone is being tested by Satan, and he is showing the person what he has been capable of doing. But the fallacy in his introduction is that he says, "I was around Jesus Christ had his moment of doubt and pain". Tht was just it. A moment. In the end, Jesus truimphs, and Satan loses in man's salvation. When I picture the visuals in the song, I see Satan trying to convince a person of his prestige, but the person standing taller than Satan because of his faith. But that's me.
Great song by a great band.

I like both versions. They juxtapose nicely.

Violent Femmes – Add It Up Lyrics 20 years ago
Reminds me of what they said about "Can't Get No Satisfaction" awhile back. The singer talks big about some of his frustrations, but they are all just cause he can't get any.

The Stooges – No Fun Lyrics 20 years ago
My History Of Rock teacher was doing a lecture on punk rock. He said the main difference between European punk and American was the subject matter. European has a sort of facist anger about it, while American was usually about being bored. This song to me is proof of that, cause I haven't had fun in awhile.

The Stooges – We Will Fall Lyrics 20 years ago
I always think of Equus when I hear this song. When Alan describes his ride with Equus, the paly says there is chanting, and whenever I read that scene I hear the beginning of this song.
O ee ramgah. Ramgah gahwaaa. Or whatever they say.
Other than that, I haven't thought that far into this song.

You can't have one without the other. I like all the covers. It would have been awesome if this all did a version together.

Patti Smith – Gloria Lyrics 20 years ago
She does, you just really have to look for it. It confuses me that in the end of "Land", she starts singing the opening of this song. Maybe the record is about Johnny?

The Beatles – I Am the Walrus Lyrics 20 years ago
My teacher told me he figured out this song when he was drawing awhile back. I will try to put his words down well enough to seem as clear as he did.
The first part, " I am he..." has four pronouns, and four lines. There were four Beatles. They are the "pigs from a gun", since everywhere they went they had to run, or fly to, since Beatlemania was in full effect. A cornflake is a very fragile thing, and sitting on it would cause it to break. Fame is very fragile, and one false move could make or break your career. The next part refers to the various media events the Beatles were always a part of, like TV, radio, etc. Since they were first a "boyband", their sponsers always wanted them to be cheery and fun. John was not one to smile, hence the"face grown long", and would have a fake grin when asked to smile.
The eggman part my teacher could not explain, just that they were like milkmen, and the walrus is a figure of death.
"Mr. City policeman sitting pretty little policeman in a row", refers to how the police would stand in a row to block the fans when the Beatles made an appearance. He skipped to the "Pornographic Priestess", which was a reference to the groupies that were all over them.
The whole stanza about the "English tan" means that they made the best of their situation, regardless of what others did.
"Expert texpert choking smokers" is an English reference to the old Englishmen who read the news of the Beatles fame, and laughed, because he knew they were not free individuals, but just receipts to the big moneymakers behind the scenes, which is the reason that they are crying throughout the song. Last, "kicking Edgar Allen Poe" meant that now the Beatles were trying to be considered serious, and acknowledged as writers.
Now, my teacher admits this song is about nothing like John said, but they probably put in personal experiences and little references when in a daze of writing.
