this is my favorite song off the album. i like to look at it as having two perspectives. i think andrea represents someone who may be trying to comfort their lover who is pretty much despondent and has had enough with life (cristina's part), but feels he may be too late. he feels hopeless. meanwhile, cristina represents the person who has basically given up living a life they pretend to enjoy and is ready for the eternal goodbye. |

this song is one of the first ones i've heard that i actually found almost creepy upon hearing it.
i think it's mostly about a relationship where the guy is probably the submissive one. he's entranced by this woman and lets her do whatever she wants in the relationship. he's probably scared to let her go or be alone. she puts her "spell" on him until she gets what she wants, and then she moves on. |

i like the vibe of this, though it's more of a interlude.
basically, you are in control of your own destiny |

yeah, in "warmth" she is pleasing the guy, but in return she has asked for him to please her. i don't think this is an ode to a female orgasm, so much as an ode to female sexuality in general. |

the unofficial seventh single from "conrol". it's definitely one of the most catchy tunes on the album. i think it's pretty self-explanatory. she's spending time with her lover and the time goes by quickly while they're fooling around. in the end, she tries to leave but ends up staying enjoying the moment. it's safe to say that janet's sexuality in her music can trace its origins back to this song. |

wow, no one's written on this yet.
well, it's basically looking at the distance and segregation between cultures and races within our own country. she's trying to motivate people to work together as one cohesive unit. music is probably the one thing that we all have in common and she tries to use it to connect us. |

this song was nominated for both a golden globe and academy award in 1994 for its use in "poetic justice". ironically, i don't think it's even on the soundtrack.
it's about falling back in love with somebody you said you'd never fall for again. |

a classic song. i believe this is about janet's first husband james, but i'm not sure.
it is about being in a relationship with someone who looks for the thrills in life. he goes out at night trying to live it up by breaking the law. he lives by his own rules like a stray black cat.
i believe the nine lives symbolize the risk of getting caught. everytime he does something illegal, he loses a life and the "man" gets ever closer to catching him. he probably lives for the adrenaline rush of almost getting caught. he may also partake in things that could get him killed literally if he's not careful (drugs, violence, etc.). all the while, she's convincing herself that she needs to get out of the relationship before things get carried away. |

this song is a b-side on the "every time" single.
i think this song is about a woman who is in a relationship where the guy is trying to change her. she keeps trying to convince him otherwise and prove to him that he should just accept her for who she is b/c he will probably never have another person who cares for him like she does. |

without a doubt one of the best songs from all for you. i love the rock/r&b feel to it.
it's about being in a relationship with a guy who comes with a lot of excess baggage. he is insecure because of a previously bad relationship and he's bringing those insecurities into this relationship, causing him to act paranoid and accuse her of things such as polygamy. though they are in a funk, she's willing to work it out with him if he just starts trusting her and their relationship. |

this song was the first non-single from velvet rope that caught my attention. i think the way the song is presented makes it one of janet's best.
ultimately the song is talking about living a lie of a life for so many years, trying to be who everyone else wanted you to be, then eventually looking in the proverbial mirror and seeing your true self. the "you" she refers to in the song is herself. |
