| The songs about drugs. "Buying a stairway to heaven" has a double meaning: buying a substance to get high and feel like you're in "heaven", and also buying a substance that will eventually lead to the persons death. "All that glitters is gold" is a reference to drugs making everythin appear good when it is in fact just an illusion, "rings of smoke through the trees" is a reference to smoking the drug, and "the voices of those who standing looking" is about people who criticise her for taking drugs. The piper is temptation for her to take the drug so that she can believe "all that glitters is gold", and "there are two paths you can go by" is about the persons choice whether or not to take drugs. The song is also a literal reference to heaven and hell (again two paths); this is possibly linked in to the drugs theme in that taking drugs is giving in to temptation, like the apple in the garden of eden story, and therefore the path to hell rather than heaven | |
