Great song. It's yet another aspect of humanist philosophy VNV Nation has so expertly committed to song. There is a Japanese philosophy that somewhat fits the theme going on here: "mono no aware". It is translated as "sensitivity to things", and while perhaps vague, it couldn't be more clear once you understand the importance of opening yourself up to the beauty of existence. This song asks us to recall when we last took notice of an endless sky, when we were last humbled and awed by the grandeur of existence. And to notice how captivating it is that this existence is weaved with transience, of the most fragile things. Done with frequency, these reminders can have a tremendous spiritual effect. It truly is worth it to cultivate a sensitivity to things, no matter how busy you are. |

This is one of the most gorgeous songs I've heard from VNV Nation. Very clubby, but you can't help but feel like you're drifting on a ship at sea gazing up at a golconda of stars, yet not knowing which one to follow. But those who wander are not necessarily lost... |

| I also felt this song to be incredibly hard-hitting...It's more than a protest song. It's somber realism for us who would rather just talk the talk. Like amethyst42 pointed out, it's not enough to simply utter your complaints against war and administration, it takes energy and volume to emerge from the "background noise". To me this song is the epitome of the genuine emotion VNV Nation is so adept at communicating with. They're so easy to listen to because they're expressive without going overboard. It's idealism I can buy. But more specifically, this song is beautiful not just for how it acknowledges the relentless flow of time, but how the speaker deals with it...I know plenty of people who close themselves off and refuse to embrace the extent of their influence when they fail to reach out for what is passing them by. It is a powerful epiphany to realize your own strength in this regard, and also why I can identify with it so well... To be a man/woman for all seasons is to sense things all so clear. |

This song is particularly meaningful in that it expresses an inspiring amount of faith in human adaptability and integrity. "I believe that we'll conceive To make in hell for us a heaven." I believe this as well, and with this belief there truly is no reason to fear a hell, whether on this Earth or otherwise. There are is no need for the gods and idols we make...we have more than ample power to transform our existence. |
