Thrice – Promises Lyrics 14 years ago
Oh but it does matter. We should still have a forum to discuss the songs meaning.

This one I feel is pretty straight forward. Dustin is talking about divorce. It sounds like he is angry about how the institution of marriage is so easily tossed aside today."Our words are so faint and feeble broken by the slight breeze or breathe." I think it is a shame that we as a society do not put more weight onto marriage and say so quickly it would be better to just cut our losses and start anew.

On another note, this song rocks. If this is any indication of what the album will sound like then we can all expect another amazing record from Thrice.

The Narrative – Eyes Closed Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is beautiful. I love how I can feel bored with music and a band comes along and surprises me with greatness.

I think this song is about suppressed feelings/love. You know, those relationships where one person is way more into it than the other. The best part of those ones is where the person who cares less lets the other one fall hard.

I just have to say that Eminem's flow on this song is ridiculous. No one does what he does in rap. This song illustrates how good he is. Woo!

The title is for sure from The Two Towers like was mentioned previously. It goes well with the theme of the song and relates to the book rather well. This may be my favorite song from Volcano as well.

Ludo – Mutiny Below Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm going to have to agree with the mutiny is in his heart. The struggle between your brain and your heart is a constant one and when you know you should push someone away you keep committing to that person hoping for some special moment. You know better but its wishful thinking.

As Tall as Lions – The Carousel Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this is about a divorce as you said. I also feel that it sung from the view point of the child caught in between it all as he is asking his parents questions. He also sings "I've been so in love," as in the past tense meaning he no longer is. Maybe he doesn't love his parents because they abandoned him in a way. Just my current take on the song.

As Tall as Lions – Stab City Lyrics 19 years ago
For the record, my lyrics book says 50,000 twice, not 80,000 then 50,000.

As for the meaning, I think he strongly dislikes some city he had to live in- perhaps when they had to record in the midwest or a city they toured at. Past not liking the city I'm a bit confuzaled. I think maybe he believes the city has sunk into the sea (metaphorically) like he wishes for in the first verse for he says "You just float by crawling in the air." Grrr, its frustrating, I just confuzaled myself.

I definitely agree with the comparing the city to hell bit though. How 50,000 burning souls crying out to him relates to him not being allowed to find love, as ganhidog said, I do not get. Help the thought process please, post away.

Thursday – Running From The Rain Lyrics 19 years ago
There was a podcast the day before CBALD came out with Geoff commenting on all the songs before they played them. He mentioned how two of his friends died on the tracks just two weeks apart.

Also I'm not too sure about the God voice theory because 1) Geoff says he does NOT have faith so it would lead me to believe that he wouldn't speak as God in a song...he might though, I could see it happening. and 2) I just feel that speaking as God seems...odd? arrogant?pretentious? I don't know, just doesn't fit with his other songs with religous overtones.

I'm in favor of the storm being the train that killed his friends. Though I see some holes in that as well. Ambiguity is simotantiously the most amazing and most annoying literary device.

Cursive – Rise Up! Rise Up! Lyrics 19 years ago
"I'd like to see Tooth and Nail top this one"
I'd like to see this not as a battle between labels and/or groups. It would be like ...rap then...you know, the bad rap that you hear on MTV JAMS all day.

Knowing that Cursive and Bright Eyes and The Faint share a home and at one time shared a band I see this song and album a reinforcement on their lifestyles. Raised to be relgious but found fault in the politics involved. Seems to me, if you listen to those other bands, they all share the same feelings on the matter.

My favorite song on the record. Go Cursive- on all albums.

Cursive – Bad Sects Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a great, compeling song. Tim is an amazing story teller; he tells stories through music in every song. I just love how he threads those stories, simple and clear ones at that, with ambitguity and deeper, more profound thoughts.

Glad to see a new album from Cursive.

The Format – Dog Problems Lyrics 19 years ago
Nate is just fucking with you guys. Ambiguity.

If you go with the "I never finish phrases I misspell" logic and believe he spells BECA for because then that makes no sense for beca is the correct begining...sooo he didn't misspell it so why not finish it? But if that is what he spells then thinking he meant Becca or even Rebecca would make sense.

Personally I think he has 2 C's in there for a reason and means to spell Becca. Bbbbut that makes no sense cause it makes the following line unrelated...kind of. SEE WHAT I MEAN BY HE IS FUCKING WITH US. Damn.

Anyways. Great song.

Thursday – Autumn Leaves Revisited Lyrics 19 years ago
For shame. You shouldn\'t replace it. This is just a \'purdy\' song. I find no flaw in this track what-so-ever. I have the demo version but didn\'t play it often because Thursday said they were going to change it and I didn\'t want to get used to hearing them that way. They warned you! hahaha. This is possibly my favorite track off this record. It is just so beautiful.

Geoff also said he had been working on this song for a long time, that it was the first thing wanted to play when he picked up a guitar-if you heard the podcast. I assume that it must have some profound meaning to it because of that...well all the songs seem to...but even more so? I don\'t know what I\'m saying anymore.

Yeah Knife2agunFight, Geoff said on the podcast that this is the song that divides the album in two. If you really care too, close your eyes and listen to it...you get an imagine of light moving-mayhaps even a train. And the metaphors keep going.

The Fold – The Title Track Lyrics 20 years ago
Sad how no one has posted a single thing about this band nor the album lyrics. This song is indeed "the title track" and the single but by no means is it the best song on the record, in my opinion. It does however, kick ass. The entire CD does, in fact.

This song is about a relationship with a girl! Yes. ...I think.

Thursday – Counting 5-4-3-2-1 Lyrics 20 years ago
3.7.06

Hey all-

Now that you've heard "Counting 5-4-3-2-1" from our upcoming album, A City by the Light Divided, we wanted to tell you a little bit about it. We actually wrote most of this song in the Full Collapse days. If you really listen, you can tell: Like that album, "Counting 5-4-3-2-1" is built around a spiraling guitar line and call and response vocals. We recorded several versions of this song since then but none of them came out quite right. This time we tried recording it almost completely live and it finally worked! When it came time to record the vocals we used an old microphone from our days of putting on basement shows-- when we finished mixing the song, it gave us the same feeling we used to get from seeing all our friends' bands rocking in our favorite places. We hope it gives you that feeling too.

The song is about a friend of mine that died while we were in high school. He was my partner in French class and we had a few things in common. Aside from being terrible at French and loving the same girl two seats ahead of us, we both hated living in a small suburban neighborhood where everyone dressed the same, looked the same and liked the same types of food. Both of us would talk for hours about where we were going to go when we got out of school and went off on our own. Unfortunately, he was hit by a train that runs behind the bleachers on the football field. When I finally finished school and moved away from that town, all I could think of was the fact that he would never have the chance to leave. Now, years later, I think of how many of my friends have been swallowed up by places that they'll never leave and it keeps me determined to follow my heart. I hope if any of you ever get the chance to leave a place that you can't stand, you play this song as you drive away. That would do my heart some good.

thanks and love,

Geoff

That is from the offical site. Seems like it is vintage. I don't care for it too much. Thursday too, is my favorite band and this song has yet to grow on me. Can't wait for the album. They'll be here playing shows before that comes out though. Fun, fun.

Matchbook Romance – Monsters Lyrics 20 years ago
I disagree with them recreating themselves though I can't truely say that for I have yet to listen to the album. This song is nothing like any song on Stories and Alibis. For one the tone is totally different, it is dark, almost sinister. It is also a song that isn't about a girl as were all the songs on Stories and Alibis. They've grown a bit, on this one song at least.

Thrice – Motion Isn't Meaning Lyrics 20 years ago
We obviously aren't as cool as you are Killme.

I'll go with this song is about how we need war to continue as a race; as sad as it sounds. He does say at the end "I'll take the life on the easy ship" which I believe means this view is easier than the idealist one of world peace. So maybe he wishes to see the option of peace but knows that human beings are just to cruel for such a thing to exist.

"Basically Dustin uses war as a methathor for survival. To think that this song is anti-war is pure ignorence. "
To say that is pure arrogance. I would hope Dustin told you flat out this song was anti-war just to make you feel belittled. Learn some humility and don't trash on peoples views. Being open to others views is not difficult; the world could use a bit more of it actually.

Thursday – I Am The Killer Lyrics 20 years ago
I understood that. I didn't say "OMG GEOFF IS SO NOT GAY WTFHAX BBQ!!!111 one one" IN FACT, Geoff did write a song about a friend of his who is gay in M.Shepard. Seeing how I knew that I don't see how I would think that. My reply had nothing to do with me thinking pendanicly on the song writing process, specifically Geoff's.

If you read the other posts you would find that the song was written from the view of the attacker. The attacker who tried to rape Geoff when he was walking home from school one day (if my memory serves me) and the life he must lead. The song is clearly based off the story of Geoff's mugging. Everything surrounding that is up in the air in my opinion. I can see how you might have seen the song as saying it is about a gay person trying to hide that part of themselves and it very well maybe. Ambiguity for the win.

I was not trying to show you up or insult you in anyway. If I offended you sir I apologize.

Mae – The Sun And The Moon Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't see how anything in The Everglow could be related to God merely because of the fact of what the everglow is. I'm sure there could be some ambigity but I don't think that was the intention of the band. Just my opinion though, you would have to ask them.

As of now I'm a bit lost to the story. Seems I should give it more time and effort.

And to julia- when I read your comment I thought of the starting line song "Surprise, Surprise" and the line

'omg let me discribe to you this guy he's in this band that writes such awful songs about me all the time-You're God damn right!'

Yeah I love that song and line. ~

Every lines hints to a relationship he is in currently and how it is going to all shit. They obviously share a bed together

"you toss and turn, i lie awake."

Niether one is sleeping well with the other there.

He hates what is going on between them but seems to need the campanionship for he is asking to wake up in "someone else's arms" not wake up without her there.

Thrice – For Miles Lyrics 20 years ago
I disagree about Dustin stepping up the lyrics in this one. All he has done really is made them more openly religious. Ironic thing is that he doesn't once mention them being religious at all, from the booklet that comes with the CD to seeing them on tour he doesn't mention the relgious overtones in his lyrics. I suppose he doesn't have to now that they are obvious.

For me this song is simply about making the ultimate sacrifice for someone you love. It makes you ask yourself if you would be willing to give up everything for your friends and family and loved one.

I don't see how the opening sounds anything at all like radiohead but then again I'm not a huge radiohead fan....soo I really have no say. The end sure doesn't make me want to break things. It pumps me up as in before a game so I have the energy and motivation to play 110%. Breaking things is bad. Control your angst. LOL.

Panic! at the Disco – Build God, Then We'll Talk Lyrics 20 years ago
What a wonderful caricature of intimacy

I don't see how that specifically means hooker. I think that it means that the events are that caricature...a distorted-exaggerated portrayal of what intimacy really is. As in sex used as a means to gain a position. a job at a law firm or as for money or what have you.
It goes back to the theme you may have seen often in some scene music; lust becoming a sole factor for a relationship or connection instead of something more meaningful -love.

That brings it all back to the sleashy motel in which the acts occur. What a fitting backdrop to it all huh?

Funeral for a Friend – All The Rage Lyrics 20 years ago
Of course this song is about casual sex. I'm going to rant about some idealogy for a second.

casual sex pisses me off, I accept it of course because everyone does it but I don't even want to kiss a girl that I don't have feelings for. I don't want to have sex with anyone I don't love. I don't see lust as anything more than another drug another high, I can resist it, most seem not to be able to.
"ike sitting in the back seat (it's all the rage)
and boring me with your body (it's all the rage)"
Amen to that. There is sooooooo much more than the sexual part of too people hooking up. It's like I just want something more than hooking up with my girlfriend. I want the feelings to back up the actions something lost in our society.

Now if you can take this crazy idealogly that I have an see how I live that part of my life and relate it to this song you can see how meaningful it really is.
"Why do we need this
Who was it that said
Great things come to great men
Well that fucker lied to us
There's nothing here but a wasteland,"
I feel like I have tried so hard to be a 'great man' and the promise of the great thing has been reduced to a wasteland because it so common and banal. People have turned what I believe to be one of the greatest things one can experience and truely experience into a game and a dull gerneralization of something very meaningful.

Thrice – Music Box Lyrics 20 years ago
Dustin wrote in his comment for this song:

"The lyrics to this song were inspired from a documentary on the Apollo moon missions called 'For All Mankind'. The second verse specifically is talking about a dream that one of the astronauts had the first night he slept on the moon. The film is absolutely amazing and Brian Eno did the whole soundtrack to it which is beautiful. I showed the lyrics to my friend who had first shown me the documentary, and he didn't pick up on the connection until I told him, which was great because I wanted the lyrics to have a much broader scope than just a literal interpretation."

You can find this in the booklet that accompanies the CD.

Taking Back Sunday – New American Classic Lyrics 20 years ago
This song OBVIOUSLY is about a long distance relationship. This would be the 'New American Classic'. As I'm sure you have known someone who is in one has been in one or you personally have had/are having this experience.

The part I'm unsure about is if its about a break up or if its about him wanting to break up. It is not clearly stated that there is a break up merely implied that one show occur.

"We've got to get better",
I said, "it's all in your head"
---This is the part where he denies the problem with 'it's all in your head' where the counter part (I can only assume this is a girlfriend) notices the problem and feels it effecting the relationship.

Oh man this is fun even if its wrong.

I believe he wants to continue the relationship but for all the pain it bring he feels its best to end it. He is nearly begging for her to say it first so he doesn't feel so bad. He wants HER to ask the question HER to untie the knot. He also doesn't want her to be hurt from it 'Say you won't care'.

On a side note, this site would kick so much more ass if you set it up more like a forum where I could tab in paragraphs and such. Maybe less lag on it too. Not sure though I don't run the place.

Oh man oh man flames. Gotta love that.

Fristly, Self Bias man, you said you don't judge an entire group of people yet you are doing that with bands. You also said you don't label people though you seem to label bands? You also specifically posted on this site denoucing everything about a band everyone else clearly supports. I don't truely understand you motives here but it does make for stellar conversation.
You used Trent Reznor as your example because of his depression and drug abuse. Welcome to the emo genre. You lumped many bands together that I know and I have listen to. Most known probably of those is My Chemical Romance. Gerard Way, the lead singer and song writer has pulled a Reznor and suffered the same lifestyle for part of his life. Does that know classify them as good music? Oh wait they scream...and whine...guess not. Emo is great because it is a style of music that isn't afraid to bitch and moan about their problems. That is also its greatest downfall. Those bands you mentioned in my honest opinion are not the best of the 'emo' genre. Then again classifying said genre is rather hard with many slashes being added to clarrify exactly where that particular band falls in place.
I'm sorry. I'm ranting. I don't mean to offend anyone. I would like to think I'm giving people a different out look on a topic. I'll now post about the song.

So yeah. The booklet for Lifted does say for Colin at the front.

I think the Colin theory seems to fit best. With Colin's brother being the one he speaks of in "from your brothers tears" it just makes more sense. The last line of "The sound of lonliness makes me happier." also fits better with that one seeing how he lost this friend.

So I vote for the Colin thing! regardless this song is really amazing and one of Conor's best, probably just from the raw emotion he puts into it.
