Secrets. Possibly a secret romance - affair. The sun is sometimes eclipsed by the moon - a man's wife is the sun, the fling is the moon. The moon (as the fling) is smaller because you spend less time with her, she has not put any effort into your family, your house, your life really. The sun is the wife and as such, is much more important to your life. Yet, the moon is still able to eclipse the sun. Stars falling from the sky are the lovers whose affair is quickly falling apart or is the married couple falling apart. It's no secret that a friend is somoeone who lets you help - somebody is ytrying to talk sense into this man, but he won't let him. The married man is lying about the affiar and will also not believe in his friend to be able to help him see clearly - i.e. a liar won't believe in anyone else. But somebody knows, and the word is getting out...So I'm tellin' you.... A man is begging for the sex from the affair and begging for his marriage to stay together. Pitiful situation...his life is a wretched mess and he is really no better than a fly who just moves from one thing to another with no real commitment other than to satisfy the moment... The conscience nags at him to straighten out - but that spoils his fun. His ambition to get the affair sex is destroying his marital success. One fails to be successful at the current stuff because he constantly looks to the new stuff. The universe exploded because of one man's lie - Satan lied to Eve and she lied to Adam and they pissed God off and the whole world still suffers today because people can't stop chasing what they shouldn't have. This line is also classic in that it has the double meaning of saying that because of Darwin's theory (the "lie), which he later recanted on, led some to believe that we were actually created because of some big explosion out in space. Look I gotta go - Mr. ants-in-the-pants can't stand to get invloved in any conversation that forces him to deal with his errors. And lastly, he would surely change a it all if he could. I think these lyrics are some of Bono's best. He's got the big theme of "The secret is out" mixed with all the details of the emotional struggle. And a dose of the Bible to boot! |

| At the end of this song, isn't the Gospel choir singing, "All alone in the heart of a thief?" | |

| Hey, anybody ever heard the European version of "Live at Red Rocks?" In the middle of this song, they slow down and Bono does a few lines from "Send in the Clowns, but he changes it to "send in the crowd." Any idea where I can get a copy of that. My old EP just won't work anymore. | |

Clearly the song is from Psalms 40. War was all about the violence in Ireland and Bono's knowledge of the scriptures probably led him to reaise it was a perfect song to finish the album. I remember reading back in the lat 80's that U2 faced a dilemna in their early years when the band wanted to follow a more Gospel-oriented route, but Adam Clayton wanted no part of it. I don't know how accurate that is, so please don't lay into me if you think that's wrong. But this song always makes me think of the conflicts and problems we have on this planet and "how long" will we continue to ignore God. Musically, I love how they finish the song, with each band member stopping their part adn finally Larry bangin' those last two or 3 beats. My two favorite renditions are the Red Rocks version and that bootleg copy with Annie Lennox. |

| Pink Floyd – One Slip Lyrics | 20 years ago |

Married man screws up at some social event and sleeps with another woman. This is his "one slip." An affair begins and carries on. Man's wife eventually finds out and "there will be no sleep in here tonight" refers to him and his wife. Eventually his marriage is done and he and the other woman continue to see each other becuase they have nothing else left, despite the fact they seem to have grown bored with each other. Unwilling to be alone in life, they cling to each other. I don't see a pregnancy in here anywhere, though I have looked after reading earlier posts. A momentary lapse of reason binds a life to a life. Because of one moment where this man (and this woman) fail to use good judgement and give in to the oldest temptation on God's planet, his life is forever linked (or bound) to another person, whether he sees her again or not. |
