Last night I drank heavily while on a date with my boyfriend. It's common knowledge that I have a drinking problem, but I refuse to really care. I tell people the bottle is better than real life. On the way home he looked at me and put on this song and I immediatly started crying. He said it was me and that he loved me and wanted me to get help. I think I will, just because of this song. |

The first time I heard this song my boyfriend was driving me home from a really beautiful night out. The song came on and he immediatly grabbed my hand, started singing along with the song and everyonce in a while look over at me. He then sent the lyrics to me, but changed the name to mine. A romantic gesture.
Every girl out there wishes they had a boy out there like the one in this song. A simple love song full of so much meaning that it can barely contain itself. I love it. There are not enough songs out there that talk of such true love anymore. |

chibbi, I think that the real reason that people are so attracted to this song is because it hits a chord in their hearts. I know it does mine. A love lost, not to the normal problems like cheating or abuse, but to distance is a lost lost hardest. Believe me, many people can relate to this song in more ways than one. In the end it brings hope to my heart, though. The hope that someday we can get the courage to fight for our love and if the fight is lost...to realize it is time to move on and remember those that ARE there for us. The hope that things will, in the end, be better. |

As the daughter of an Alcoholic and an ex bar-head I know these lyrics all too well. "4:30 on a tuesday, it doesn't get much worse than this" The only thing keeping you alive is the thing killing you, and as you try to kick the habit the night becomes your enemy and the monkey screams at you. Just one more drink...one more bar...it'll be okay. As sad as this song is, it has a sense of hope as does all of Counting Crows' songs. Lovely |

connor35, i agree that it's about Doug, but maybe not that deep. They're just saying that they followed him as far as they could but he went too far. In the end they had to kick him out because of his addictions. Part of my always laughs when I think of this interpretation, though. Doug Hopkins must have cringed when they wrote this song thinking: "Now why couldn't you have helped me when I was alive?"
Still, a beautiful song that goes to show how someone will go wherever a loved one goes except the bad places that they recognize all too well. |
