deffinetly not about jerry, he was still alive. maybe pigpen, but the story about mickey's dad is interesting. id like to assume that someone's wrong about the money thing and this song is more about wantin someone back just to have them back, not just to get money. but that's just cause thats what i think of the song, not cause it could ever be true. steal your face right off your head....ever think about that in correlation to one of the grateful dead's main logos, the skull? its a faceless head, thats for sure. also, if the story above is true, then it'd be typical for the dead to turn something shitty into something so kool and longlasting. you see those dead head skulls everywhere |

I was at the show in STL too. i must say, this song was just beautiful, and the crowd's response was beautiful. Dave came out for the first song of the encore alone and asked everyone to quiet down and listen and we all did, hanging on every note because it was unfamiliar to everyone. he also played it the next night in Kansas City, which was when he announced it was a brand new song. going on what i know about Dave, i'd say this could either be about his sister that passed away or his other sister or both. its actually prolly all at once. remembering the good times thats hes had with each of em. there's nothing like a good brother/sister relationship and he obviously realizes that. Dave is a genius and the band just gets better every time i see them. Tuesdays's show was the best musician ship i've ever seen out of DMB. believe it or not their jams have gotten even better if u can imagine. to those who have never seen DMB live, i highly recommend it. peace |

I think alot of you are looking at this song as anti-religion, but I dont see that in any of the lyrics. Given I've never heard the song, the lyrics are clear and understandable. He's talking about how stupid holy wars are. Religion is usually thought of as peacefull and loving. A way of salvation in the end. And with this being true, what sense does it make to say you killed 100,000 men in the name of God, or your preferred religion. Anyway, there's my two cents. peace |

Cire1986-dude(i use that in a unisex form, don't take offense please) u are the smartest person i've ever heard talk on here. no shit. i've thought everything u said forever, but was too lazy to attempt to sort it out in a way that made sense to anyone but myself, but u did so very perfectly really. my congrats and appreciation for making good and reasonable sense. nubs: i'm a christian as well, but u gotta get over this unforgiving wrath of God idea u have in ur head. You have no clue as to how this world works, and unfortunately it's because u've been incredibly sheltered. not by religion, by ur parents. but hey man, u are who u are. just give the rest of us a chance.... anyway, the song...this is a great mindset to live by. he's not sayin if ur not like him don't talk to him ever, he's just sayin don't be harsh on me and i won't be harsh on u, and we'll all get along and agree to disagree. i wish more people saw the world thru those understanding eyes. i think the reason that Ben Harper's songs pertain to religion so much is not because he's a christian, he himself said he's had conflicting interests as far as Christianity goes. but he is just overall very intrigued by the concept of christianity and the power it has over some people. much like Dave Matthews and his obsession with Jesus Christ, although he has trouble believing the Christian concept of it all sometimes. |

stairwaytoheaven, i respect ur thoughts and ideas. but dude...what have u accomplished by coming on this page and calling alot of us "stoners" pathetic? everyone has problems in life, some read to get over it, some write, some run, well I smoke. thats how i deal sometimes and honestly, it helps. not that weed is the solution to everything but if we're all happy being high and listenin to tom petty kick ass, then please just let us. oh yeah....i went and saw tom petty this summer at st. louis. was one of the best shows i've ever seen. that dude's still got it. I even brought a hog leg to celebrate the ocassion and burned it down during "you don't know how it feels". ahhhhh...good times..... |

the lyrics posted here are right, but the way they are put into stanzas is slightly wrong, and it makes a difference in the way the meaning is read. "Sitting still as stone watching - watching People walking by you wondering why No one ever stops to talk or thinks about it – if they ever did What if God shuffled by?" and also.... "Lying on the roof counting The stars that fill the sky I wonder if Someone in the heavens looking back down on me – I’ll never know So much space to believe" anyway, this song is absolutely amazing. when i read the lines about lying on the roof counting the suns that fill the sky all i can think is that this is pure poetry. its beautiful. to me this song talks alot about unsnwered question, and wonder. childlike wonder. why do people not speak to each other anymore and just say hi? if God say saw this he'd be ashamed. why are people breathing just to breathe? breathe for something you love. hes telling people to have their dreams and not just sit on them and not try to acheive them. and most importantly, ENJOY what you have! |

jab1326, "it's the next best thing to be, free as a bird." to me he's sayin the best feeling in his life is being with that someone or that group(wife, girlfriend, bandmates) now the second best feeling he experiences is being free as a bird, which is a result of the former. I adore this song and find the tid bit about playing the end backwards very interesting. i'll have to try it out. |
