The Pretty Reckless – Heaven Knows Lyrics | 8 years ago |
To me it is about how Fd up society is, filled with greed and people taking advantage of those just trying to get by. Some guy looking at what how he is taking advantage of people to gain and knows damned well it is wrong: "Jimmy's in the back with a pocket of high If you listen close You can hear him cry Oh, lord, heaven knows We belong way down below Sing it Oh, lord, heaven knows We belong way down below Way down below, way down below" Hooker doing crap she hates because she doesn't see options: "Judy's in the front seat picking up trash Living on the dough Gotta make that cash Won't be pretty Won't be sweet She's just sittin' there on her feet" Saying everything is just crap and it gets worse: "I've had better days, man I've seen better days I've had better ways, man I know better ways" God would be judging all of this, and not approving "Oh, lord, heaven knows We belong way down below" seems like each part of the song seems to fit this mold. |

This was not a supergroup...they were nothing when they "formed" as you put it. This was never actually a band, they got together to do one tribute to a fallen friend, and that is all it was ever meant to be and all it ever has been. |

The Pretty Reckless – Where Did Jesus Go? Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I am pretty sure it is a layered song. Yeah, it is obviously about a girl who was abused/prostituted, but I would say that the original verses were originally written about her, then later developed into the song as is. |
Alice in Chains – Check My Brain Lyrics | 14 years ago |
oh, and I guess if you really want to, you can look at "California" as being a new start without Layne. There is usually more than one meaning to a song to a writer. Metaphorically, this makes a lot of sense, and is a rather brilliant way of saying, hey...Layne, were movin on. it does fit, though I tend to think it is not the true or at least primary motivation behind the writing. |
Alice in Chains – Check My Brain Lyrics | 14 years ago |
butterfleXxXbee...I think in a sense he is being sarcastic yes. When he says California's all right Somebody check my brain and the other main line, I get the impression he is basically saying he's made the plunge and made the big move to LA, and he thinks it is okay, which kinda surprises him...so maybe there is something wrong with him. So many artists don't want to move to LA because it can be so crazy, and they want to stay true to the roots that made them and ther music what it is, but for most it is necessary for industry survival. I don't think that he ever really saw himself making the move and is a basically saying...hey, I must be nuts cuz I don’t mind LA. I think the lines "hung my guns and put 'em away, oh yeah, The trick of the trade, and by the way, oh yeah" kinda reinforce my statement that he never really saw himself moving to LA, and feels it was kind of buying into the stereotypical scene...almost a selling out to some degree...fitting the mold. Tears that filled my bowl Years expended gone This could be a reference to the fact that he/they fought for their whole career to be independent and stay in Seattle, and now he's kinda thrown away all of that effort. |

I think this song is about a girl who was impregnated during rape. She chooses abortion even though she doe not support the idea of abortion. |
Silversun Pickups – Well Thought Out Twinkles Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I believe this song represents how perpetual improvement is too easily avoided. We tend to abandon that which is not perfect, but there is nothing wrong with imperfection. |
Tool – Forty Six & 2 Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Something I came across "OKAY!! What Does It All Mean? 46, 2, Shadows? You must have a little understanding of chromosomes and some science to get this if not just look any of this up online it is all acurate!! it took me a year or so to put this together due to my infatuation with a d*mn song!! eesh" The major underlying principles relate to chromosomes and Jungian theory. Some of the ideas behind this song are based on the teachings of Drunvalo Melchizadek. In his own words..........."There are three totally different kinds of humans on the Earth, meaning that they perceive the One reality in three different ways, interpreted differently. The first kind of human has a chromosome composition of 42+2. They comprise a unity consciousness that does not see anything outside themselves as being separate from themselves. To them, there is only one energy - one life, one beingness that moves everywhere. Anything happening anywhere is within them, as well. They are like cells in the body. They are all connected to a single consciousness that moves through all of them. These are the aboriginals in Australia. There might be a few African tribes left like this. Then, there is our level, comprising 44+2 chromosomes. We are a disharmonic level of consciousness that is used as a steppingstone from the 42+2 level to the next level, 46+2...These two additional chromosomes change everything." "Anima / Animus (pronounced On-ee-mah): In Jungian psychology, the anima refers to personality traits regarded as feminine that are often repressed into the unconscious of males while the animus refers to traits regarded as masculine that are often repressed into the unconsciousness of females. Although suppressed from conscious awareness, the anima/animus influences our behavior in powerful ways. In most individuals,it is projected onto people of the opposite sex and accounts for the experience of falling in love with someone we hardly know. As the unconscious pole of the self, the counter-ego represented by the anima/animus can also be a guide to one's own unconscious realm. It is often experienced as the guiding female (if you're male) or male (if you're female) presence in dreams. THE SHADOW!! In Carl Jung's personality theory, the ego represents the individual's sense of personal self. The sense of personal identity is purchased, however, at the expense of certain tendencies that are rejected as 'not-self'. According to Jung, these rejected traits come together as a kind of unconscious 'counter-ego' which he termed THE SHADOW. We may become unduly anxious or irritated when in an environment or around a person that in some way reminds us of repressed aspects of our self. If a person has rejected his or her own sex drive, for example, that person may feel irrational fear or anger around an overtly sexual individual. The shadow may appear as a person in one's dreams, usually as an individual of the same sex. Of all the archetypes, the shadow is the most powerful and potentially the most dangerous. It represents everything about ourselves that we fear and despise. THE MEANING OF 46&2 and SHADOWS? HERE YA GO!! According to Melchezedek, our planet is covered with geometrically constructed 'morpho genetic grids'.YES!!! MORPHO GENETIC!! These grids extend from about 60 feet under the Earth's surface to about 60 miles above the Earth, arranged in geometric patterns |
Nirvana – Do Re Mi Lyrics | 18 years ago |
yes imcalledacow I am sure you are right None of his music had any meaning just endless ramblings WTF...I am confident most songs EVER have meaning to some degree. Whether it be venting, sending a message, or whatever....songs have meanings. One, meaning, no, usually more than one. He pften said that his songs really were just songs, that was just the way he was. Im sure he did not write all these songs without having a message. What is a song without a meaning? Seriously, do an experiment. Write a poem. About nothing. Dont try to think about anything. It will mean something to you. People not knowing the meaning of a song, or reading into possable or multiple meanings of a song only adds to the allure of the music. If you dont believe this, why do you come here? I bet 99.9% of the people here want to get or give more insight on music, and realize that most songs DO have meaning, even if they cant see it. |
Beck – E-Pro Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think that this song is essentially saying you cant trully give up your past. You might be a changed person, but the evile/skelatons (hmmm I dont believe Ive ever spelt that before) are always something that will be inticing to some degree |
The Presidents of the United States of America – Peaches Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Nirvana – Do Re Mi Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Also, in the 3 verses that look like this (they are all similar): The rays in his socket The praise from his moment The chains from his socket bother me note the sequence 1st line indicates a binding, holding, controlling..etc 2nd line gives praise...though you may not want it you love it 3rd line expresses a desire/hope to escape its grasp |
Nirvana – Do Re Mi Lyrics | 19 years ago |
First, realize that this was the last song that Kurt ever wrote in Courtney’s presence, in their bed shortly after rehab. Also, if you have ever had a serious addiction then you can probably relate to what I will say, as these express some of the feelings that I went through. If I may And if I might Lie me down, weeping I hope I can succeed, but this sucks, I just want to sit here in my own morbid world And if I say What its like I might be, dreaming Not 100% here. There are several angles that come to mind. If I may What is right So may time, see me heal If I quit but I enjoy doing it, what is the right thing to do. Hopefully I can do the ‘right’ thing despite the enjoyment of the wrong Those years in his wanted A phrase from his pocket And chains holding the wind, I won't breathe (or...life long dream) It has controlled me. It has owned me. I don’t know if I can escape the drug. Dream Do re mi Dream…well, dreaming/hoping to be capable of quitting Do Re Mi…a cheerful line, also the basics of guitar, one of Kurts passions. And obviously, it sounds great how he blends the lines together. If I may And if I might Wake me up, and see me If I can somehow beat this, that would rock….if I can get away from it for a bit and see my life without it, and if its good, maybe the drugs would be in the past. If I do And if I lie or Find me out, see me If I cheat please help me. Don’t ignore it, give me shite And if I may Cold as ice I may, how to see me I might have to see me heal The drugs have made my senses numb, if I quit, maybe I can feel again The rays in his socket The praise from his moment The chains from his socket bother me (The chase from his socket i will need) Its so seductive. It never fails me, it’s the one thing that’s always there. Yet I hate it. Dream Do re mi Wish me good And wish me light Finally now, seeing I think this part is pretty obvious In dismay In their way I just may cry Follow hate, free me Im not sure here, especially since Im not sure on the first line. I believe it is “In their way” and basically says that the addiction makes him a nuesence to his family and close friends. He doesn’t want to be another persons pain Yell or wail And if I sigh Seek me out, the TV When I quit Im going to be moody, and bored (as an addict knows after quiting it is hard to be exhilarated), so keep my mind occupied or I WILL use If I may and if I might Go to gut to bleed me Help me do whatever it takes. The praise in his pocket The rays from his warm lip The chase from his owner, in my tea The chase from is over, in my dream Again, praises to the drug, then, depending on what the line is…If the drugs catch me again, Im in for good, or I dream/want to/pray I can win Dream x3 Do re mi x5 These may not be the right lyrics, nor the right meaning. I don’t know, but its what this song will always mean to me. |
Nirvana – I Hate Myself and Want to Die Lyrics | 19 years ago |
xpankfrisst, you niled it. This song was not wrote as a joke, Kurt wrote it at the end of a long tour, the song is actually about him missing courtney. However, yes the tittle did come from his reply to "how are you" |
Nirvana – Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Kurt was well known for being a firm believersupporter of both womens rights, and speaking out against rape and abuse. This is but another song that touches on the subject matter, and probably the best. For those of you who dont know, Frances Farmer was accused of being crazy because she was an original 'party girl'. She was flambouyant, liked partying, and had no intentions of settling down...unnacceptable in her era. She was committed, and escaped to her moms house. after a few days, her mom recommitted her. She spent a couple years there, where she was raped and prostituted to sailors. She eventually was released, after convincing the doctors that she was "reccovered"...shortly after, she returned to her old lifestyle, and the doctors realized theyd been tricked. She was reccommitted, and her mom agreed to allow a labotomy on her, a 'modern' labodamey that is. afterward she was released and lived a life of reclusion, though small glimmers of her beautiful spirit were seen now and again in interviews. This is actually a facinating topic to read about. A horrifying yet addicting story....also a decent movie. |
Nirvana – Pen Cap Chew Lyrics | 19 years ago |
this is supposedly written around the same time as serve the servamts, and is tittled to tribute the name of one of their several former bands/band names |
The White Stripes – Blue Orchid Lyrics | 19 years ago |
wow, some great insights gere. in_lieu_of_love, I think you may be right, but my original thought was that it simply referred to a woman who treated a man like shite. He gave everything with a pure heart (white) and her cold touch turned that heart to blue....saddenned, and dismayed that though he gave all it was not good enough |
Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Like "Soundgarden," "Black Hole Sun" is the name of a sculpture found in Seattle. It's in Volunteer Park on Capitol Hill. It looks kind of like a huge, black doughnut and it's aimed so you can see the Space Needle through the middle of it. I feel the first half of the songs describes a somber mood caused by the bad weather that Seatle is famous for. However, I believe the second half of the song, from "Times are gone for honest men" on refers to a changing world, how innocence is lost - "And my youth I pray to keep Heaven send Hell away", and that one often wishes 'something' would wash the world clean. The depressing weather is a metaphor describing a depressing world. |
Nirvana – Do Re Mi Lyrics | 19 years ago |
along with my above interpration, I feel I have an analogy of the song. Keeping in mind when and where this song was written I can not believe it does not have a stronger meaning. If you want, I can post what I feel the song is about. I pretty much have it broken down by each section |
