I think Dylan himself would say it means whatever it means to you. He'd like that it could be interpreted generally or specifically. Great lyrics usually have more than one meaning - layers of meaning. This was one of the first LPs I owned. Dylan was getting more and more surrealistic. He continued it with Blond on Blond and JWH (this one is deceiving because of the "folksy" sound but Frankie Lee is quite out there). Then he faltered with New Morning and the next few until Blood and Desire. |

| I also love this song. A lot of people forget that, besides writing political songs, Dylan also wrote some great love songs. I used some of the lyrics in my wedding vows. He knew how to create the image in few words: "true like ice, like fire." He knew that you can't get much truer than that! "knows too much to argue or to judge." That is one heck of a person to be in love with! | |
