This song is genius. He first says he'd love to regain the innocence of youth when he felt part of humanity by listening to his elders. Now that he is older and jaded - he knows that he is just part of a system. This is metaphorically saying that we are nothingness in comparison the rest of the universe and we are just "taking up space". We are the little white shadows (as in Aristotle's shadows against a wall). ohh (its just sickening) Maybe you get what you want (maybe we have choice) and maybe you just stumble on it (it would have happened anyway - choice is an illusion). The permanent state refers to the fact that all our choices, everything we'll ever say is predetermined. Swimming in a sea of faces says how inhuman he feels - how very much disconnected he is and truly alone. At the end, after all this metaphysical analysis, the only thing that matters is the love he has and how he wants to keep it forever (Gwyneth?). |
