exactly, it's about a father leaving the family... this song would've perfect in this one episode of grey's anatomy! but, ya, the singer struggles with knowing that the person standing him/her is his father at the same knowing that calling him father couldn't be further from the truth.. i love the lines: i hear her say, you'd make your father proud it echoes through the years as if i could forget all a mother's tears i love BTE songs because they're always explore the grey, the shade between this emotion and that emotion, n this seems exploring the shade between the NEED, the WANT to have that father figure in his life while at the same time, resenting that he was never there, and not being able to forgive to forget "all a mother's tears".. |

fuk dis song is sooo fukin awesome... i dunno, itz like... u get dis sense of security... da whole 'under you' motif streaming through da whole song... it doesn't hav to be sex or nething... if u notice, itz more like a big sister-small brother relationship... in da beginning, shez reading her magazine while hez counting crayons... so da guy (huz counting crayons) iz obv da younger one, or da more immature one, da one datz being taken care off... n den california calls her... n dey move... and dey go thru deir bad times... u no... as erinchan sed, a straving artist type-o-thing... (n omigod, datz da best line in da whole fukin song, erinchan)... n ya... den she goes i'm guessing... and even though shez gone, he still feels kinda 'under her', u no, under her wings... notice dat it goes from 'breathing in and out' to 'blood flowing out' to 'moving in and out'... she still lives in him... and he still lives under her... gawd, itz soo amazing... u get dis amazing feeling of security u no... seriously... wow!! and da bridge, u move in slow degrees, a sudden memory, u're a leonard cohen song... well, havn't heard any leonard cohen song (hez a canadian poet/writer btw... think hez dead now, dunno)... but his musical career wuz totally overshadowed by his literary career... ne see a connection? |

i agree w/ everyone here dat says dis abt a best guy fren hu's tokin to dis chik's b/f... cuz dis guy fren has seen his best 'girl' fren thru thick n thin n he knows her inside out... and although he doesn't like in DAT way, he still luvs her more den ne else cud eva... he probably has a relationship himself but, his frenship w/ dis chik is soo intense dat he starts to get a lil possessive in da same way a actual b/f wud... cuz dat's how much he luvs her: 'how wud u no?' and in da chorus: 'yea, yea, i know it..." how everytime she cries or laughs, dis best guy fren will hear somin dat no one else cud eva hear... i'm a songwriter miself (hehe... ain't we all?) and i'm not great or nething but i know how dam hard it is to convey emotions jealously and possessiveness n those emotions which, well, although their not da most admirable dey are a manifestation of strong luv... so in dat way, dis song is really friggin unique n i luv it! cheers y'all, knid05 |

firstly, although i totally luv OLP and deir music i strongly disagree w/ raine maida's lyrical outlook on religion... but dat seems to be wat dis song's about... album by album, OLP is become bolder on address religious issue... I think this song, like naveed6 and teedus sed, is about religion, drawing from more then the obvious reference to Jesus and the devil in da second verse... "where are you?" is an desperate and/or cynical cry out to God actually... "i'm kickin and screaming, you're not listening" implying dat he's tried praying and all but it doesn't seem to make a difference... the paradox is dat he accepts the existence of God but questions the validity of religion... not of God himself... so he's not atheist... he's agnostic... the sexy refrain, "sons and daughter's, mother's and father's, everyone's waiting for our luck to change" could imply how ppl seem to rely on a higher power to change deir lives, to sumhow make ur luck change... and everyone falls for it... so he believes in a indifferent God basically... i'm really disappointed dat he says dis... like, lying awake, dis touches upon sensitive issues such as faith which is gud... but, he's onli seen one side of da story... and, the famous balance that OLP is luved for is found wanting in dis song... music's gud though... |
