I doubt very much that this song was written with a same-sex couple in mind. I do predict, though, that it will be featured in many upcoming PRIDE celebrations this summer. It hurts to know that nobody wants to see me and my girlfriend together. Unless you've faced this kind of thing -- you just don't know what it's like to be afraid to hold hands in public (even in a liberal mecca like NYC). It's terrible. At any rate...my gal and I do face a lot of opposition -- both as a same-sex couple and as an interracial one. So it's nice to hear a song like this, especially by an artist as mainstream as Akon |

| Pink – Dear Mr. President (feat. Indigo Girls) Lyrics | 18 years ago |

As a lesbian (who is, evidently, not entitled to all the rights granted to my straight family/friends/coworkers/fellow Americans) and a public school teacher (who is trying to help counteract the havoc that No Child Left Behind has wrought on our children) and a woman (who should not be allowed to make choices about my body) and an American (who is more than a little embarrassed about he fact that Bush has become our figurehead) -- I have to say...this song really resonates with me. Generally, I find pink irritating...but I like this song quite a lot. I don't think it particularly edgy (it's nothing that hasn't been said) or poetic -- but what it lacks in those areas is made up for in sincerity and humility. As for the question about why Pink didn't receive comparable backlash to the Dixie Chicks, I have a few thoughts: 1. The Dixie Chicks are a country group. Country singers are supposed to be hicks and conservatives, both of whom are supposed to be big Bush supporters. They stepped out of the mold and it upset and confused a lot of people. 2. Pink is hypothetically edgy. She's "supposed" to make bold statements and not care about who she might upset. 3. The Dixie Chicks remarks were more scathing. Aside from the "whiskey and cocaine" remark, this song really refrains from personal attack, I think. That's my four cents. |

"And then you went and said you didn't understand How a girl so beautiful could love a guy like him Now that's a question you should be saving for your wife And while you're on the subject ask her where she was last night" hahaha.....oh snap! I really love that he's so human, you know? He's willing to accept bad reviews and criticism as a part of being a musician -- but is totally not above giving shit right back to people who go overboard. |

how have so many people missed the completely obvious message of this song? they've been together for a while and sex has become mechanical. rather than torturing each other and drawing things out for a while, they do what they know will get each other off quickly. so while they're trying to be good lovers, it's become extremely calculated. his tone is almost pleading -- which is what i absolutely love, because it's heartbreakingly honest. it's not that he doesn't love this person anymore. if he didn't, he'd just be done with it. he loves this person and it kills him every second that they are so mathematical and lacking the lyrics and melody that they used to have. |

this song makes my heart break and makes me want to dance at the same time. the line "i am finally seeing why i was the one worth leaving" speaks so strongly to me. it's about seeing someone out of the context in which you know him/her and coming to terms with the fact that you weren't the sunrise and sunset for that person and that he/she could do better than you. it's about coming to terms with the fact that you are not as great and wonderful as you once thought you were. and you go out and drink and watch people trying so desperately not to go sleep alone (and you know that's what they're trying to do, because you're trying for the same thing)...and it's all pretty depressing. but with a dance beat! love it. |
