| Evelyn Evelyn – Have You Seen My Sister, Evelyn? Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Have you seen my sister Evelyn? Dang she's gone and wandered off again. I've been looking high and low, Where oh where'd my sister go? She's been known to spend some time, With a sailor friend of mine. I called him up and what'd he say? "I ain't seen that girl today." So if you see my sister Evelyn, Tell that girl to hurry home again. Where oh where'd my sister Evelyn go? Is she with the doctor? Or the plumber? Or the dentist? Or the handyman? Did she go to India? Or Africa? Or Wichita? Or Pakistan? Did she go and join the Navy, Or go completely crazy, Or is she playing a trick on me? Did she run off with the barber? Or the professor? Or the banker? Or the clergyman? Is it possible that she could be in Timbuktu, Or Katmandu, or Vegas, Or Uzbekistan? She learning how to do-do, The Chattanooga Choo Choo? Oh, golly, where could that girl be? She's been known to jump a train, With a gal we know from down the lane. I looked her up and wha'd she say? "I ain't seen that girl in days" Is my floozy sister with the doctor, Or the drummer, Or the dentist or the handyman? Did that ho-bag quit her job and run off with that dickhead Mike, To Indio, Guantanamo, Or Panama or Disneyland. Is she studying Kabbalah? Did she win a million dollars? Or is she dead in a ditch somewhere? |

Good hypothesis evolutionaried & SorrowSworn! At first I was alittle skeptical, but then it all started making sense. Also I was thinking that the lines "We'll make a man out of you yet" work in that context because that's the reason that many abusers use to justify their behaviour and in terms of the environment motif it could be the attempt to masculinize "mother nature" |

Now for specifics! "Five A.M. on the bathroom floor from the night before" = possibly a regretful morning-after situation in which the "guy" realizes that what is behind the girl's pretty face is not all that appealing. "i've had my mouthful" or possibly "i've had my mouth full"? = this lyric always reminds me of giving a blowjob frankly whether as simply a reprsentation of something else or not. "when they cut cut cut cut cut cut cut you up, cut cut cut cut cut they remember" = The first thing I thought of when I heard this was of plastic surgery but then I started thinking more of cutting people with words or with the look in your eyes. I do believe however that I have come up with something a little more interesting the 3rd time around. Pictures in magazines being cut out and admired. Which explores the idea of why being this 'star' is worth it because of that admiration or ability to influence others and the promise of being forever loved and remembered while at the same time showing how the expectations of all these admirers are a heavy burden and slowly chip away at a person until it is hard to know whether you are more than just a manifestation of consumerism and playing a part in the 'killing' of other people by sucking them into this. |

My thoughts on this song resemble Th Grinch's in that I see it as being about a famous person. Whether said person is famous as in a star is debatable. It could just as easily be about someone who is infamous for her sexual behaviour or even a prostitute or hooker. Regardless of any specific character though I think it's definatly about being a beautiful and desired commodity and the feeling of no matter how much doing this may hurt them it is not something they will give up because it gives them a sense of worth. I don't know it's all very reminiscent of prostitution for me whether as a general theme or more of a reflection on how we have a tendancy especially in show business to sell ourselves off. And slowly come to the realization that all this glamour is just that a pretty but false enchantment which leaves us wanting and slowly eats away at us. |

Huh, everytime I see what other people think theres all this stuff I've never thought of, and alot of stuff that I thought of that hasn't been mentioned even things that I took as being obvious. I love how DD are like that theres always all these possibilities, that depend on the 'colours' we think in. Basicaly a story of blind forgiving love, where anything that they don't like in the other or in the relationship doesn't exist and they can't see things from the other persons point of view, they can only see what is obvious to them (black and white) and so are colorblind. Also I noticed quite a few people mention how they thought of "but you only love in red" as being lustfull which I never thought of but the way I saw it was that red was violence, and anger, and uncontrolled feelings, so that he is unable to control his feelings of hurt, of confusion over what he doesn't understand and so he tries to control her, to control their relationship, and make everything obey his sense of reality. |

"i am an accident waiting to happen i'm laughing like mad while you strangle the captain my place may be taken, but make no mistake from a little black black box i can say without shame that you've lost do you know what you've lost?" My absolute favourite part of the song to me it seems as though 'she' is kind of floundering, and on the verge of like a breakdown or failure, while at the same time the ex is panicking and getting rid of evidence and/or silencing people (strangle the captain) but even though she has been hurt and lost control and things are falling, even from that point she can still say to him (black box = plane crash) that no matter what he does to her, no matter the difficulty of the situation the ex lost her and the 'war' even though he may have won a battle or two. |

the green eyes. When I first read your comment I didn't think it could possibly be correct, not only because the saying to call a spade a spade is not an inate racial slur, and I had not known about the 'spade' connatation, however after a little research and checking with the lyrics I can see how that most definatly fits... I hate this song, it makes me soo sad, and depressed, and hopeless it really does, anybody else feel the same way? |

3. - woodwell Indeed it is because conor "honestly believes that America will be better off under a different president and this (singing the song) helps acheive his goals. What I like about this song is that it names the reasons he is against the Bush reign but little else, it is thus left up to the people listening to think on it and formulate their own opinions. 4. monkeyflapp - Conor is not "jumping on the bandwagon" as has already been proven in fact he is continuing his revolt against the bush lie and trying to stir up the flame of revolt in other people, frankly what I can't understand is why noone is doing anything partiqularly after the Downing street memos, why is the entire american population at a standstill? The proof that Bush is a lying selfserving bastard is right underneath your noses and noone seems to understand that. I can not believ why Bush is not being impeached, Clinton was going to be impeached for lying about his sex experiences which frankly are no ones business, but no one is doing anything about this lying peice of turd. It frankly makes me sick! 5. Chadwick, my gay friend, love you too! 6. clippy.hanger - Totally agree with you about conor's "stereotypical cowboy" outfit. That was the cherry on the cake for me, the quintessential 'fuck you' Bush, I can wear cowboy clothes and pretend to be a big man too. |

Lots of comments for this song 1. zacharygarren - to say the right of choice is not a womens rights issue is just wrong, although there is the oft disputed issue of 'life', the facts are a womens body is her own and unless we demand the right to have complete control over it we wont have any! Although I would never want to get an abortion myself, sometimes there is no other viable option for the girls involved, I think if people really gave a damn about that child's life they would be doing a lot more than teaching abstinence. 2. - Although the line "Does he ask to rape our womens rights" may seem to be refering to abortion I feel it has more resonance when applied to the ideas Bush has on abstinence, on birth control etc. It may suprise you to learn that Bush refuses to fund organisations which "promote" sex, such as planned parenthood or other overseas organisations helping underage prostitutes. That I think is the real crime with his refusal to help these organisations little girls in america and out are faced with no help when they and or others make mistakes on their behalf. There are prostitutes in many countries who before had aid workers helping them to learn how to better their situation, giving them condoms and information on safe sex, and giving them hope that one day it might be better, that they could run away and get help from them. Those hopes have been dashed by Bush it is Bush who facilitates the rape of young girls when aid workers are unable to help these girls and their "clients" are allowed full access with no fear of what others might do to stop them. |
