| I didn't think it was possible, but the instrumental part at 3:38 gives me a mental/musical orgasm. Literally. | |
| Bright Eyes – I Must Belong Somewhere Lyrics | 17 years ago |

"In truth, the forest hears each sound Each blade of grass as it lies down The world requires no audience No witnesses, no witnesses" someone has already written something about this stanza. however, what I see in it is a reference to the well-known logic puzzle: If a tree falls down in the forest and nobody hears it did it make a noise? (wikianswers:"Yes and no. No, If a conscious body is needed for something to be heard. Yes, if everything consists of one consciousness and that consciousness can hear it's own noise as nobody (no body).") what he's probably saying is that the world has its own ways of existing and does not really need us, people, to be there. that things are the way they are, with or without our presence. not sure what to make of that though :) |

"and all the nonsense of that vision that is failing every test" what a clever way to refer to the well-known phrase "Stop it or you'll go blind". although it usually means masturbation, i've also heard it being used to mean someone promiscuous. anyway, another impressive song about our low morals and casual sex penned by Chris |

i don't suppose i'm right, but the last verse in the original version Beautiful angel Pulled apart at birth Limbless and helpless I can't even recognize you always reminded me of abortion. of course it's not meant to be taken literally, but if you actually do, it depicts abortion. just my thoughts... |

apart from being one of my favourites, this song has also taught me a lesson. about two years ago, a friend of mine asked me out. i freaked out, totally, and turned him down, despite liking him, for no better reason than being afraid things might not work out. worrying in advance - how stupid is that? anyway, our relationship has grown colder, and the chance i had is gone forever. i've always hated myself for my foolish mistake. this song helps remind me that when it comes to the matters of the heart, one shouldn't think but act. so that the next time this kind of love comes my way, i'll be ready to welcome it with open arms.... thanks for that, chris |

guess you are right... was just being mean, see, coz i don't really like it when people confuse the slavic countries (me being of Slovak origin)... so i was just showing off :o) without realizing it might actually be related due to the contents of the book... but nevertheless, i adore this song, especially the lazy, lingering piano notes... pure beauty.... |

>>> veisalgia well, it doesn't make THAT much sense, as Kundera is originally a Czech, not a Russian writer.... but nevermind, the languages are both Slavic and do have some common or similar expressions, so I forgive you for your mistake :o) (am just being ironic) |

| Bright Eyes – Drunk Kid Catholic Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
'They crawl from the oceans To paint in the caves But I’m working all weekend I need to get paid ', As has been said before, I agree that the weekend means both drunks and catholics are getting wasted in their own way, and he's just comparing them to himself. "They crawl from the ocean" - they separate from the masses, the civilisation. "To paint in the caves" - caves could represent pubs/churches, where both drunks and catholics each go to worship (aka paint) their superiors. And then it comes - he says he can do none of those things, because he's got more important things to do. So at the end of the day, it's about how drunks and catholics hide away in their shrines and do their thing, but not everybody can. |

| I also see this as a growing up song. The ballerina, the small world (when you're a kid, everything seems so big, and then when you're becoming an adult, it might get smaller... know what i mean?), and then the leaving passage... leaving your childhood, your home when you grow up. | |

agree with most of the ideas mentioned.... i believe the whole "there's many things to it" theory is the closest to the truth. the drugs, EDs, loneliness etc. remind me of this "celebrity" lifestyle. this is also supported by the NYC inspiration. i feel conor is writing about his experience with the life on a big scale, thus: "not something i would recommend but it is one way to live". and he uses this one night of partying to give an utter, yet subtle (yay, a rhyme) description of how such people (models, actresses, "the big ones") live, probably day-to-day. and i think his observation is pretty accurate :o) |

| The Frames – Angel At My Table Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I heard Glen himself say this song was about a girl he was in love with when he was a kid/teen. She was a goth and had black hair and this black eyeliner and she came to him one evening when it was raining and her eyes were all soaked and he said she looked beautiful... That's all I have to say. So romantic... :o) | |
| Bright Eyes – A Poetic Retelling of an Unfortunate Seduction Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Steve's ideas at the top there seem to be pretty probable and quite accurate... but I think I also agree with onewordrepeated about the drug thing, although it probably means so many more things than just a simple one we've all been trying to find/guess. NOt to repeat what has been said before, first resemblance of drugs comes to me with "how soft they speak and seem to be at peace" - could well be the people already addicted (to the drug) that the narrator is meeting. "that is pulling me in to this" no need to explain i guess "and the shades of the lamps are woven red" maybe the suffering drugs represent (red=blood=pain) "the light, it stains and consecrates" drug habir stains, of course, coz it stays... "and here i know seduction breeds from wanton hearts that would seduce and grows and spreads its vine and leaves embracing those who might have moved but now remain to drink the night " pretty easy... the drug tries to capture those who tried to escape "leave you drunk inside this dream and you watch them take the light from you" - at first, the high seems like a dream, but later all the pretenses are taken away and you are left in the dark... all the positive things that you experienced at the beginning now give way to negative ones as you suffer more and more "tasting the skin of a foreign girl" an unknown thing/substance "and she ties your hands with a string of pearls" pearls represent something valuable... the drug habit ties your hands, that means it gives you no choice, it keeps you to itself, with a promise of something you might get in return (the pearls) "within her poisoned womb" drug=poison "so once your safe inside, she might let you out to fly in circles around the room" once she has you totally devoted to her, she knows you can't get away, and can leave you running about... or flying, more like... the flying represents the high, the state of being intoxicated "but its always night and there is no moon and you wonder if you are still alive and you’re not sure if you want to be" so, you don't see the light at the end of the tunnel... and you'd rather be dead, obviously... you feel like a walking corpse "but you drink her sweat like it was wine and you lay with her on a bed of blue and its awful sweet like the fruit she cuts and feeds to you " but still you continue to hold on to her (the drug), because all that she offers is just too good to be left behind... you're unable to escape the habit itself |
