okay, i would like to try to solve the problem of why it matters if thrice is christian or not. by calling them a christian band or looking at them that way really changes the way a lot of people see the lyrics. instead of artist in the ambulance being about being saved by a stranger (a medic who you will never meet or see again) it becomes a song about how god saved you after the accident. all the lyrics that are taken as a powerful, meaningful look at the world to an athiest are suddenly stripped because they then relate only to god which an athiest doesn't believe in. if they are a christian band all the songs are powerful and meaningful in regards to faith instead of life. but the solution to this problem is this. faith is had in life whether it is in your friend or in god. you can read the lyrics the same way. whether you are an athiest or a christian i think we can all agree that christ was a pretty good dude. his ideas give us an idea of how to live and how to interact a sense of morals that allow us to live in peace with eachother (theoretically). apply them to christ and the bible or your friends and your life, it ends up being close to the same. i refuse to see thrice as a christian band, whether they are or not, because it makes the songs meaningless to me. it puts them with something that i don't believe and don't see. them not being christian allows me to put them to my life and not something bigger. the moral of the story, see the lyrics as you want to no matter what the band's original intent was, i figure if your christian you can probably still see a better correlation to yourself in the lyrics than some greater being but i may be wrong as i do not know what it is to have faith in that. as for this song, i believe it is about him having trouble with his faith and even losing it somewhat. it is a front, not something he can grasp and he fakes it when in bad times (falling through the cracks). but this faith gives him something, whether real or not, something to live by and live with. -derf |
