Alanis Morissette – Precious Illusions Lyrics 19 years ago
First of all, let me say, this is one of my all-time favourite Alanis songs.

In the beginning of the song, she sounds so uncertain.. almost like a child questioning her parents as to whether she's going right or wrong in some endeavour, or rather likens her experience with the guy to such. She throws in several rhetorical questions that emphasizes that.

The persona was hurt in previous relationships... or was with guys that did little to help her self esteem. she has an idealistic view on relationships to protect her from getting hurt. The lyrics whilst trying to guard herself portray intense insecurities. Hence why she keeps asking questions that basically ask 'can you fix me? can you fix what went wrong all the times before?'

And while she's waiting on some guy that can fix all that is wrong.. she has these 'precious illusions' that protect her meanwhile. They're her safe world that reassures her and are probably greatly exaggerated by her ideals. Parting with them, would be like tearing herself apart emotionally to admit that her ideals are just ideals... it would be like parting with a childhood best friend - a cherished memory.

As for the boys gone through water.. i'm going to go out on a wild guess...

"this ring will me yet as will you knight in shining armor
this pill will help me yet as will these boys gone through like water"

Getting married will be like a promise... but there's no such things as knights in shining armor (atleast not in present day society.. its entirely fairy tale or deemed as such). She probably means the pill won't work.. because all the boys they came and went like a blur, none of which truly stood out.. Or helped break her away from her ideals. They were as ordinary and common as water.. They were compared to water and not wine or such.

I don't know if i'm right.. thats just what i think.

Michelle Branch – Something To Sleep To Lyrics 19 years ago
To me, i believe this song is about a love triangle of sorts....

There is a couple, and "the other girl"....

I assume the guy in the relationship is one of those good guys that loves deeply. It appears that his girlfriend doesn't share the same sentiments. She does enough to keep him there, for he serves a purpose (whatever that may be) but doesn't reciprocate his love.

Then there's the "other girl", the persona telling the story... She's in love with the guy who's blinded by the other girl. It is possible, that the guy probably suspects what is going on and told the "other girl" about it... probably said more than he should and felt guilty, or even engaged in a bit of rebound activity.

This other girl, as well, seems to be as loyal to him as he is to his girlfriend... she's there and grateful for whatever little he throws her way... while she can't have him because he's dedicated to someone else, she can still dream about him... have hope live on in her mind for a change...

Overall, i believe the song is like a triangle of hope... The girl in the relationship hopes to keep him, and believe she has wool over his eyes, so that he serves his purpose to her. The guy hopes that she will change and maybe love him back. The other girl is the loyal friend, hoping that he would finally see the truth and turn to her...

Gwen Stefani – Hollaback Girl Lyrics 20 years ago
I love this song... it has a catchy beat. I see it being a good cheerleading anthem AND a party anthem.

I love the lyrics too... it's awesome in its own way. That is, in its simplicity it says enough to make you fall in love with it, and turn it into your own personal anthem.

To me, this song is about not taking crap. "hollaback girl" is supposed to be (i think) like a girl who if she has a issue with someone she'd put it off or avoid. Basically, Gwen is saying she's not no coward and she can take as well as dish out so you watch what you're coming with.

Beyoncé – Be With You Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is self-explanatory... she's speaking of her love for her bf/husband, and expressing how content she is in the relationship... above all, no matter the difficulties and circumstances that may arise that might seperate them... she would rather be with him.

Beyoncé – Yes Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is about meeting a guy... A guy that laid it on thick in sweetness and charm, being a gentleman, the works.. like a dream. Then after a while, his true colours begin to show.

In the beginning of the song she was enthralled by him and thought he was unique.. The female in the relationship isn't morally challenged and wanted to take it slow rather than rush things..

..By the end of the song, she realizes the gravity of her mistake, and kicked him out of her house (and life) when he started pushing too hard - as she said - acting ungrateful.

"You had a lotta nerve
You too damn old to be so immature
I hope you learn
You said I move too slow
I showed you to the door
You said you'd call me later
I said don't call no more
It's cool if you can't wait for me
I'm glad you let me know
Cuz you show me your true face baby
The first time I said no"

I love these lines... this is one of my favourites from Beyonce.. i can totally empathize with this song...

Jimmy Eat World – Sweetness Lyrics 20 years ago
I think the song is about the uncertainty of the initial part of relationships... Maybe the tension, the confusing "what shall i say? how should i act?"... Maybe he's left in such awe of the girl... and they're playing a game of cat and mouse.

The two of them are not in a relationship, so to speak, but they have feelings for each other but are not acting on it (or acting on it enough). They're dancing around their feelings. Hence the "I'm still running away, I won't play your hide and seek games". He hasn't left, he's still there, she's still there. Thus he's still interested..

"The sweetness will not be concerned with me" she's not doing anything extra, and nor is he...

This song could be one trying to convey his feelings to some girl that he like(d). "Are you listening, sing it back" as in, 'Can you hear my thoughts regarding you..? Do you understand them..? Can you help me fix this and get *us* where i want us to be...?'

Linkin Park – Numb Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree with what y'all were saying before. This song is one of my personal favourites for Linkin Park.

I think its about being in a situation where someone else's beliefs, views, ideas, etc are being forced upon you and the expectations is to conform accordingly. However, trying to be yourself and be what someone else *wants* you to be tends to prove difficult, especially when your character is much stronger and resilient than you think.

It starts off ...
"I'm tired of being what you want me to be
Feeling so faithless
Lost under the surface
I don't know what you're expecting of me
Put under the pressure
Of walking in your shoes"

indicating that the persona did indeed try to be what that other person wanted them to be... Then later realized that in trying to make that other person happy, they've managed to gradually lose pieces of themself along the way. As it continues, the realization and acknowledgement of that... along with the conflict in one's mind between doing what makes you happy and what makes someone else happy places you under pressure..

The chorus emphasizes that.. and the person just finds the whole situation tiring because you can't be two people at once; live up to two sets of expectations simultaneously... At the end, he decides that he's going to start living up to his own expectations, goals, what makes him happy... regardless of the consequences... make his own trial and error and be happy rather than be told all his mistakes before its done... and how to do it.

Simple Plan – Welcome to My Life Lyrics 20 years ago
OK... Everyone has experienced those feelings at any one point in their life (and those who haven't.. eventually will). When i first heard the song, it appealed to me because of the words. I've felt like that before - everyone feels you're happy because you're so good at saying "i'm fine", when in all actuality you're not. (like My Chemical Romance "I'm not okay").

When those feelings strike (well atleast with me)... thats when that old saying "everyone believes their load is the heaviest" comes into play. The persona isn't necessarily any one person... it's people in general. You feel.. well I felt as if no one could understand the situation i was in, the feelings i was feeling. I went through a year of being hurt by the people closest to me (best friends) simultaneously, then followed by the uncertainty and true feel of defeat left in the wake of hurricane Ivan which devasted my country. Compiled emotions surrounded by those all happy and fine and dandy in merry merry land (or so it seemed because everyone has their own burdens and their own several fake-happy faces they put on display) as far as i was concerned, no they simply don't understand. With me, it was a "when it rains it pours" situation... but the song has some meaning.. and those who have been in experiences such as those in the song, or remotely close can relate... otherwise.. folks, don't let your dislike for the band blind you from listening to the song with an open mind.

Even if its meaning is explicit and doesn't requiring that much deciphering..
