Switchfoot – The Sound in My Mouth Lyrics 17 years ago
i didn't say you're wrong but i'm just saying you're stretching it. it may mean that to you but that doesn't mean its what the song means, not even close. i know thats the case with all opinion, but it kinda peeves me when people relate every switchfoot lyric to christianity just because thats the way they want to see it, because most of their fans are christians (unfortunately). i just think switchfoot deserves more credit for being lyrically so multi-dimensional - which they dont get because all the christians go around using the lyrics to preach their own sermons, making the songs seem one-dimensional to passerbys.

and i do see it from your point of view. sf's songs lead me on these trains of thought too, but not all of the thoughts the song inspires in me can be attributed as the meaning of the song itself, without any logical connection. i sometimes get the feeling that christians (not necessarily you) want to lay claim on them just because they're celebrities, you know like those people who go "switchfoot is christian!" as a bragging point, as if it strengthens what they believe. i mean, who cares if the president is christian, it doesn't mean anything to my walk with god. being a christian isn't like being in a political party, its not about "who's on our side", so whats the big deal about proving that switchfoot are christian as long as they make great music that benefits everyone, not just christians?

Switchfoot – Revenge Lyrics 17 years ago
word, ler.

tsned, i think its interesting that jon wonders "have hatred and gravity won?" when he otherwise refers to gravity as the force that binds everything, that keeps the physical world together. if the song is talking about the cross, and how its the only place where justice and mercy met, where revenge and love met, then jon probably intends 'hatred' and 'gravity' as opposing ideas in his question - essentially asking, "have hatred and gravity BOTH won?" at the cross, they both did win. the haters spat and killed and split the spoils, and love still descended. love didn't take the hatred away, but absorbed it, paid for it, and chose to overlook it. just like even though we're sinners (hatred's victory), god looks upon us as if we're holy ONLY because he paid for it (gravity's victory, not just in the physical world, but thanks to Him, on the social level too). did that make sense? haha

Switchfoot – Circles Lyrics 17 years ago
i think this song is blatantly existentialist.. its lamenting how life can feel like spinning in endless circles without answers, "a quiet desperation", where it all feels pointless and monotonous. when you spin in circles, you're not making any progress, you're just in the same place. and then jon urges us not to give up the fight, the search for answers: "don't believe that there's nothing thats true", while also taking a jab at postmodernism (the idea that there's no right or wrong, no true or false, because everything is relative).

i love how the song is repetitive in a trippy way, to symbolize the idea of repeatedly spinning in circles.

"you can connect this song to many different aspects of christianity"

like i said on another thread, you can connect anything to many different aspects of christianity - it might make the song a better experience for you, but that doesn't warrant going around and saying "this is what the song means".

"again, you cant say that our interpretations and beliefs are wrong. its just going deeper into meaning and trying to learn about the song."
there's a thin line between going deeper into meaning and learning about the song. you go deeper and deeper and after a point you're no longer learning about the song but just learning, period. so it can sometimes be offtopic.

if switchfoot wanted everyone to have one single interpretation of their songs, they would be more to the point - but they create the songs in a way that can mean different things to different people depending on where they're at. when you ask jon what a song means, he doesn't say "this is what it means...bla bla bla" but he asks the fan "what does it mean to YOU?" anyway, end of rant.

just because the band members are christians doesn't mean everything they write is or has to be god-oriented. if you look hard enough, you can come up with a connection to god in pretty much any song, but that doesn't necessarily mean its what jon is talking about. sure this song fits in a christian worldview, but that doesn't mean its preaching about god's love or something like that.

for me, and for anyone with good taste in music, the sound is at least equally important as the lyrics. christians care only about the lyrics, which is the reason why CCM sucks. i mean, its the only genre based entirely on lyrical content. and fortunately switchfoot is one of those few bands associated with that genre that place a high premium on musical quality, so it kinda peeves me when some fans don't quite understand how great the musicality is (just as great as the lyrics) and dont stop at that but go on to use it to fly their own flag about god's love or something when the song itself doesn't bother to do that. and i take a wee bit of offense to your statement that i'm not fully grasping the meaning. i'm glad the song speaks to you about god's love, and i hope it does the same for everyone, but the truth is, the song doesn't point to any kind of solution but just nudges you in the right direction by pointing out that there is a problem. that's really all there is to it. i think if at all jon hints at an "answer" to this problem brought up by this song, its not on this song but i would say its on "let your love be strong". anyway, we can agree to disagree. respect.

Switchfoot – Revenge Lyrics 17 years ago
thats certainly an interesting explanation but to me this is what the song means:

we all experience thoughts of revenge - which proves our innate desire for justice to be met. "as the weight of the world found revenge" - the weight of the world's sin had to be avenged, justice had to be met - a sacrifice had to be made, someone had to pay. and thats why He was nailed to a cross, while we threw insults at Him from our terminal (limited, with boundaries) view.

the song might be (at least partly) from the point of view of the thief on the cross next to Christ, who pleaded "remember me, Lord" ("Think of me, Lord, I'm a few breaths away"). this makes more sense in the third stanza which says "i'm a villain, i deserve to be dead, i've been hung up for wrecking my life" - does this remind you of the "good" thief telling the jerk-thief "we deserve this for what we've done, but He's innocent"? he's been "hung up with thoughts of revenge" - thoughts of injustice - because an innocent man (jesus) was hung next to him.

the heart of the song is in the lines:
"So I stopped for a moment
To look at the sun
Die in the day [remember the sun died "in the day" at 3pm the day the Son died?]
That's when the irony hit me
This was revenge
That love had decended
And stolen our pain away"
this is where the idea of "revenge" being the "need for justice for the world's sins to be met" hits home - the line "that's when the irony hit me, this was revenge: that love had descended and stolen our pain away". His brutal death, ironically, wasn't just mankind's hatred and innate thirst for blood to atone for what we had no idea about, or because of mankind's "hate for a crown (hate for authority/God)", but it was, ironically, God exacting his vengeance (revenge) on the sins of the world by sacrificing Himself... we weren't really the ones being vengeful, instead we were the ones who drew FIRST blood, who caused the offence in the first place - and God was the one taking revenge, by shedding His own blood to pay for our act of drawing first blood - by paying for original sin, and all the sins mankind ever committed or will commit. the "irony hit me", because he took revenge by hurting himself, not us - the ones who deserved it. that is an ironical kind of revenge, because in essence it was selfless love. "love had descended and STOLEN our pain away" - shedding his own blood was god's masterplan - his way of *tricking* the mathematical-ish system of justice, hence he didn't take our pain away but STOLE it away. His "murder had stolen my rage". "How a thief (on the cross) had been robbed". By God.

this song is jon's latest lyrical masterpiece. about the amazing complexity/mystery of what happened at the cross, about human nature, about grace/mercy meeting justice, about a selfless love, and about how undeserving we are of it. Think of me, Lord, I'm a few breaths away..

"One life left to leave" is a reminder that this life is short - you'll be leaving all the gold someday, so *lead* your life in a way that counts for something worth more than material things which won't matter when you die (or "leave").

Its the same idea as the lyric in "Awakening" where Jon sings "I wanna live like I know what I'm leaving" and in "Circles" where he completes it with "I've left all that I've wanted to leave". Its interesting how Jon scatters similar things throughout the album. Like for example, the idea of "spinning circles" is not just in "Circles" but also in LYLBS.

its ridiculously predictable of christians to say they don't like the lyrics just because it doesn't have as many "christian" trigger-words anymore. switchfoot is as spiritual as ever, yet as universal as ever - the lyrics on the new album are their most mature yet, walking the line even more perfectly. just because it isn't spoonfed and all about god doesn't mean its not good or isn't spiritual. since when did it become a rule for a song to be about god for it to be spiritual?

i don't understand people who keep bringing god into this (and don't tell me the guys are christians, i know that). this song, to me, is about coming alive, breaking free from the numbness that this fallen world can bring up on you, and starting to feel again. doing away with the scars and feeling innocent and alive like a child again. i think you guys are overanalyzing "i wanna wake up kicking and screaming" - it just means he wants to wake up alive and kicking. you know like the saying "its alive and kicking". and yeah, this does sound like WAOT except the chorus isn't cheesy and the music is far better (even though the bridge is a wee bit formulaic).

and burreyeant i don't know where you get the idea that the song's talking about god's love - why are people so quick to christianize the lyrics? this is straight up rock'n'roll.

here's an excerpt of what the "official" lyrics are...

When success is equated with excess
When we’re fighting for the beamer, the lexus
As the heart and soul breathing the company goals
Where success is equated with excess

I want out of this machine
It doesn’t feel like freedom

(chorus)

Cause baby’s always talkin ‘bout a ring
And talk has always been the cheapest thing
Is it true would you do what I want you to
If I show up with the right amount of bling?

Like a puppet on a monetary string
Maybe we’ve been caught singing
red, white, blue, and green
But that ain’t my America,
That ain’t my American dream

"my chest is in my head" gives me the image of his head hanging down and touching his chest (on the cross).

"lets go down together" also gives me the image of him telling the thieves on both sides of him (who symbolize humankind - the ones who reject him, like the one thief, and the ones who accept him, like the other)... he tells them, "lets go down together", which could be seen as, "i go down with you in your fallenness, i'll pay for it", or "i feel your pain, son".

Switchfoot – The Fatal Wound Lyrics 18 years ago
I looove this song. Jon says this song is about hope, and about how "the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone" which is a phrase about Jesus from the bible.. so I think its safe to say this song's about Christ's crucifixion.

"I am the crisis", Jesus took the our sins upon himself, so he became the crisis that we are. "I am divided" means that though he was perfect and holy, yet he was looked upon as if he sinned, because he took our sins upon himself. "I am the razor edge" is probably referring to Jesus' words saying that he came to divide, he came to save his people, as john the baptist describes him: "His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn". So the first stanza is basically Jesus' thoughts as he's preparing to die.. "there is no easy now".

The chorus gives me the image of the Son of sorrow, Jesus, on the cross.. "staring down forever". But I think its more like God/Jesus staring down forever from heaven at mankind, "with an aching view" because we're like the prodigal son and he's waiting for us to come back to him. He's "disenchanted". So he decides, "lets go down together", as in, he decides to go down with us, he decides to take upon himself our sinfulness and bring himself down to our dirty level, and *then* offer himself as a sacrifice in place of us (we deserved to pay the price for our sins, but he paid it). The God of the universe decided to come down and live amongst us, and to go down with us in our fallenness.

just before he goes down with the fatal wound (dies), he tells himself, "this is the real thing, no rubber bullets now, this is the final bow". in the old testament, they offered goats and pigeons as sacrifices for sins, but now this is the REAL thing, the real ultimate complete sacrifice, the final bow...after this no more sacrifices will be needed, its final. it even pays for the sins we'll commit in the future. "my breath avoids me" reminds me of how even God the Father looked away from jesus and forsook him for a few moments when he was on the cross...his own breath avoided him. thats the pain we deserved, but he went through it so we wouldn't have to suffer for our wrongdoings. "my stomach's upside down" reminds me of how jesus' side was poked with a spear when he was on the cross, and water and blood came gushing out... leaving his stomach upside down, as in, mangled.

the song is poetic brilliance, and its sad its meaning is lost on so many people. its NOT a suicide song. the harmonica is heart-wrenching.

Thrice – Betrayal Is A Symptom Lyrics 18 years ago
In the pointless fight about the whole Christian deal, we've lost the meaning of this amazing song...

This song is about grace, i.e. "undeserved merit", which is the amazing idea that though we are all sinners deserving punishment, God looks upon us as if we never sinned, because Jesus already bore the punishment for the sins we committed AND the sins we're gonna commit in the future. Its the idea that we're not gonna get to heaven because of the good things we do - but because we believe that God, in his perfect justice, ensured that our sins were punished, and in his perfect mercy, took the punishment for *our* sins upon Himself. He took the beatings that we deserved.

"Faith is not something that I grasp, it's something that I fake, as I'm slipping, as I'm falling through the cracks. Faith, without actions is a mask, for making the same mistakes, as I'm slipping, as I'm falling through the cracks." - Here he's talking about how fallen and hypocritical he is.

"But somehow I find beauty in our failings. Somehow I find meaning in our lies. Somehow I’m made perfect in this fracture. Your back is begging sweetly for my knives." - We are the beautiful letdown. This bears close resemblance to 2 Cor 12:9-10, where St. Paul says: "He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities ... for when I am weak, then I am strong." Here Dustin is talking about how, if not for his failings, God's grace wouldn't be revealed - if not for our sins, Christ wouldn't have had to die. Its in our failings that we see how amazingly forgiving and graceful God's character is.
St. Paul's words "My strength is made perfect in weakness" versus Dustin's words "Somehow I'm made perfect in this fracture": without the weakness, without our symptoms of betrayal, God's medicine wouldn't have been seen - we couldn't have been perfected - God's grace wouldn't have been revealed.
"Your back is begging sweetly for my knives" - my favourite line in the song. Because he bears punishment for our misdeeds, in a way, each time we sin, symbolically, we're thrusting knives into his back. And His back is begging sweetly for it...amazing grace.

"I’m spilling blood, glancing down to hide my face. I walk with eyes closed tight, through monuments of grace. My faith is a front, I’m spilling blood. Isn’t it sweet how I’m trusted with angels, and how quickly I break my promises? Isn’t it sweet?" - He's thrust knives into God's back so many times that he's spilling blood, and hiding his face with shame. This is where the meaning of the song becomes most evident - when he says he walks with eyes closed tight, through monuments of *grace*. This is why his faith is a front: he's not perfect - he's just as bad as the worst sinner out there - but his faith covers all of that... just because he *believes* in Christ's sacrifice for his sins, God looks upon him as if he never sinned... and his faith becomes a front that hides the blood dripping from his every sin that symbolically thrust a knife into God's back.

Yet, God still trusts him with angels. And still, he continues to break his promises. And each time he breaks his promises, he sees God's grace covering him with forgiveness and another chance. And grace is limitless, he could break his promises a million times, yet it would be as if he never broke a promise, because of his faith, his front. Amazing grace, how *sweet* the sound.

So, does this mean you can sin as you please? No. This is where the first few lines of the song come the full circle in meaning: "Faith without actions is a mask for making the same mistakes". If you understand God's grace and believe it ("faith"), but that doesn't make you love God more and seek to do what pleases Him ("without actions"), then you're just using your faith and God's goodness as a mask for making the same mistakes. You'd be taking advantage of His grace... which seems to be Dustin's predicament, as well as my failing. We know we'll never *actually* become perfect, but God doesn't require of anyone to be perfect (heck, we're already "MADE [to look as if we're] perfect") - he just requires that we *try* to please Him. And that is where we tend to fail. But while trying and failing, we find God's beauty manifest in our failings, covering our failings every single time ("I find beauty in our failings"). That idea is what this song's mainly about, besides ofcourse, the longing to overcome this state of having faith without actions...

But hey, feel free to look at the song however you want.

Switchfoot – Daisy Lyrics 18 years ago
Yeah, like OnDistantShores said, I think this song is asking a daisy flower to give itself away-- to bloom, rather than hold back. Jon takes the rain as an example and basically tells the daisy: look at how the rain and sunshine gives itself away so that you can exist! so take the cue and open yourself up, let go, bloom, so that everyone can see you not as an unbloomed bud but for the beautiful way you were created to look, as a flower.

Obviously, he's not talking to a daisy for real, but taking it as an example to encourage people who need to let go, to pour oneself out like the Rain. Like Him, "when He gives Himself away."

I love the part where Jon hums nasally.. the song has such an amazing rainy-day vibe. And the climax where the whole band kicks in.

Jon Foreman: "Ah, daisy! sweet daisy... this one is my wife's favorite. I wrote it a while ago yet somehow it didn't make it onto the last record. I'm really thankful it didn't; I don't think we were ready for it then. Some songs age like wine and others age like milk finding a sour, over-thought, overproduced end. This one lasted for a long time and kept getting better. I feel really great about how it came out. In fact the end of the tune might be my favorite rock moment on the record, ironic because the beginning of the tune is anything but rock- so sparse and pretty. Because of the different tuning, it's a pain to get the guitar back to normal afterwards so we've never played this one live. I want to wait for just the right moment. I remember chad was hitting so hard on this one that he ended up breaking the kick pedal on the last hit of the song, he shouts out,"I think I broke the kick pedal!" We ended up cutting it out for the record because it seemed a little camp. Maybe we'll put it up online or something, because it needs to be heard. Classic Chad: the man with the iron foot strikes again! For me, this is an appropriate way to finish the record- A song about letting go."

Jon Foreman: "I wrote this song so that we would have a tune to play during the set with a harmonica. I'm deadly serious here. The harmonica will drive a man to do many things, (especially, in conjunction with a few bob dylan disks). This song was one of those tunes that you just spit out and try to figure out what it means after you're through- a rather dangerous way to go but very honest, almost free association type of thing. Well, it means a few things to me but overall it's a song of hope. The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. Hope for the hopeless in the form of the king of failures. The bed of e-bow guitars at the beginning really set the tone for this track for me. I whispered some Bokowski-ish lines over top and viola! -a vibey track appears from the mist of the harmonica flatlands."

Jon Foreman: "I wrote this one in Australia a while back. I remember it well. Sometimes I get really down on myself and the world around me and wonder why we're all here, spinning around on this planet. It seems that we're unable to escape the ugliness that lies within us nor around us and yet we all have this immense appreciation and appetite for beauty and truth: a paradox indeed. Here's another one- the worlds of politics, business, or even music tend to behave with the social etiquette of a Jr. High School playground. Do we all become marginalized as mere products to be sold? I'm not buying it. Neither the good nor the bad. I don't believe the hype. Meaningless, meaningless, a chasing after the wind. There's a place where all of these shadows will fade and no amount of hype can take that away from me."

You see, I believe in democracy because I mistrust all humanity equally, (including myself). Power corrupts us all and we become political, (in the worst connotation of the word). We become simply pawns of our own insatiable hunger for control. Maybe control is a myth, like Santa Claus or the easter bunny: a nice fable that makes the children want to be good all year round. Well, seems to me there's a monster in all of us. I pledge allegiance to a nation without borders, without pride, without politicians like ourselves."

How is it that one of the most meaningful, intimate moments in a human's life is now used to sell beverages or magazines or auto parts? And indeed, sex sells. It's no wonder that sex is easier than love, because love is extremely difficult, almost impossible at times. I have no fingers to point, my friends, I'm simply stating the obvious and I love screaming this one out. This one was inspired by the Shins- a great band with great production elements. In many ways, Romey really made this one come alive."

Switchfoot – Happy Is A Yuppie Word Lyrics 18 years ago
"nothing is sound" means nothing makes sense. everything is meaningless. (something that makes sense is 'sound'.) it could also mean that 'nothing' is sound, as in, the feeling of nothingness, the feeling of emptiness creates sound or noise, that such an emptiness exists...as a cry (a sound) waiting to be addressed, to be filled with Something.

I think "looking for an orphanage" is the whole idea of doing something eternal...being part of a bridge that wont burn down. An 'orphanage' is a symbol thats the opposite of material pursuits like a new SUV or having 2.3 children and a normal life. Its about breaking convention, and doing something to change our messy world, instead of sitting inside our ignorant Lexus cages. To do something thats more lasting and meaningful- to look for a bridge that won't burn down, thats what an 'orphanage' stands for, I believe.

Switchfoot – The Shadow Proves The Sunshine Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the "dry eyes in the pouring rain" line might mean how the Light is available to us (the rain is pouring) yet we're so lost (our eyes are dry).

Jon Foreman: "Here's a tune that is a bit different than anything we've done before. It's a very simple tune- so simple that we almost overlooked it. The fight with this one was to work slow. The song didn't want much else other than a very honest performance. So when we went in to start overdubbing we would track a bunch of ideas and then come to the conclusion that we liked it better naked. So we would take everything off and start from scratch. It ended up being one of my favorite songs on the record. One of my favorite moments on the record was singing the words into the piano to get all of the strings resonating; I had the idea a while ago and have never been able to pull it off. It felt great to scream into a piano and hear the piano scream back. I can't wait to play this song live- it feels like it needs to be sung outdoors, against the backdrop of a dark night."

Switchfoot – The Blues Lyrics 18 years ago
Jon Foreman: "Drew's feedback on this track was so great. he had two combos cranked with different pedals chained to each. Noise never sounded so beautiful! But the true hero for me on this tune was Tim. Don't tell him I said this but he's a freaking genius when it comes to parts like this. I walked back into the control room and there was Paul Mc- I mean Tim- making things happen. I tend to write some of my favorite songs on significant days in my life- birthdays and such. Anyhow, here's a tune that was written on new years day 2004. I pulled an acoustic demo of the song together and threw it on the pile of songs we had for the record. We loved the way the vocal sounded on the demo- raw and honest so we kept it. To sing a song about the new year in march just wouldn't sound quite right, so the vocal on the record is the first time I ever sang the song: 1/1/04. This one means a lot to me, like our modern day Psalm of sorts. This would be the next step from the beautiful letdown lyrically and musically- a long meandering song about how the end of the world might actually be a beautiful day. It will be a day like this one when the world caves in."

a beautiful song about a guy talking to God about his sweetheart. i think its before marriage ("you shared her with me yesterday, so close and yet so far away").. a beautiful example of how a guy should treat/view his girlfriend. at your feet i lay her down...

Strata – When It's Burning Lyrics 19 years ago
I LOVE this song. The sound of it, the lyrics - everything. The music literally makes you feel like its the end of the world, somehow. This song leads me to consider the point of existence itself. "We should prepare for the worst" - I think is a question asking us to consider what might be in store after life...hell..."will we suffer at all?" And the line "When its all coming down, who will remember me?" reminds me that when the whole world ends - is it gonna really matter whether I was famous or whether I had a lot of friends or whether someone loved me? My fav line is "this could be better for the world"...think about that!
