| thanks germantownrd ...can't believe i didn't recognise it was from american beauty! | |
| My Latest Novel – The Reputation of Ross Francis Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| i think the end of the second verse is "He UNcrossed his fingers and allowed himself a grin" | |
| Joanna Newsom – Inflammatory Writ Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| the last verse seems to me to be to be about finding inspiration in someone else's imagination. her inflamatory wit was written when she was 'not inflamed one bit' - so she has used the 'great american novels' to combat her own creative crisis. 'at least they didn't run' implies that because of their status as literature, the inspiration from them can be consistent. | |
| Devendra Banhart – The Body Breaks Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
i think you could argue that this song is not about loss at all, and that it is much more intimate than that. the constant references to bodies coming together can't really help but bring up sexual implications (maybe it is just my dirty mind, but...) listening to the lyrics with that in mind, the whole song could easily be about sex for example - "it whispers at first but it ends with a shout" in this way the song is arguably a pretty carnal song, written reallyunbelievably beautifully. and the "tiny spark" of the last verse could be a child. i'm not saying i entirely believe this, but i think there is a lot more to the imagery than simply being about loss and the end of a relationship. |

| The Decemberists – Leslie Ann Levine Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| i think that the suicide in 'we both go down together' could be due to the girl being pregnant, and that this song takes up from there from the perspective of this child who was born prematurely ("birthed me far too soon") as the mother was dying. i don't know how feasible that is, but anyway, that could explain the "girl who died with me", and the songs relationship to 'we both go down together.' | |
| Gym Class Heroes – So Long Friend Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
i am pretty sure it is "stuck somewhere between reality and a fucking tool video". which makes more sense, cos tool videos are really fucking weird. i'm not sure this works brilliantly as a song, but as a poem it is really good - the "this town doesn't like it when people leave" bit is really well-written. the meaning is really obvious, and really sad. |

| Digger – Mesh Hats And Interstates Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
'todays theme is tired, bored, read, write, play, drink, pill, sleep.' that is unbelievably good. i listened to this album when my brother borrowed it off a friend and bought it as soon as i found it. excellent album (and the artwork in the liner notes is really cool too) This song ties in with the rest of the album - about long-distance relationships - and also talks about the creative process like he is biting his nails as he is writing songs, and playing guitar so much his fingers are cut by the strings |

| Motion City Soundtrack – Together We'll Ring in the New Year Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
i really like the way that MCS seem to cover loads of things that are really relevant to me. this song is about being at a party and feeling out of place and fake because you are smiling. the new year, to a lot of people, symbolises a new start, and the point of the song is that it isnt - new years day is just another day, and your problems and issues dont magically disappear. |
|
| Motion City Soundtrack – Mary Without Sound Lyrics | 20 years ago |

'straight from the pages into memories that hang around' genious. i'd never thought of it as a suicide song before, but looking at it again it does fit 'head for the razor broken bottle hangman runarounds'. |

i'll just echo you guys - the 'i like you' bit is awesome. i agree with this being a song about insecurity, and thinking that if only i was attractive i could be happy and everything else will follow from that. |

| Audio Karate – Jason Lyrics | 20 years ago |

quality song, and i like the idea of it being about the breakup of a friendship because the singer seems to be holding the other person back. but if that is the case then shouldn't the chorus line be "leaves me breaking in your wake"? could it be about someone quitting the bad, if the intro was written by an old singer who quit? i don't know the bands history at all, so that could be totally wrong i love the way the chorus kicks in, really cool |

| Saves the Day – Monkey Lyrics | 20 years ago |

i don't understand the problem people have with this album - ok the sound has changed but it is still recognisable as STD. The lyrics are still awesome, and there are some amazing songs on it, just don't listen to it expecting a re-run of their previous albums but yeah, this song. i think it is political, with politicians filling peoples minds with confusing and contradictory things. and chris is saying that people "stare at the ceiling and play dead" and don't pay attention to the world around them. Anyone agree with that idea? |

| Death Cab for Cutie – Styrofoam Plates Lyrics | 20 years ago |

i only just got this album, and looking through the booklet before having listened to any of it this song hit me. it is just amazingly emotional and powerful, and it only gets more powerful the more i listen to it. if you want to listen to another interesting take on a funeral check out 'priests and paramedics' by pedro the lion. the end of this song is about the lies mourners tell themselves - and the pedro song is about the effect on the priest. they dont really realate all that much as songs... but i just love both bands. anyway, dcfc are amazing, im just pissed off i didnt get into them sooner! |

| Jawbreaker – Shirt Lyrics | 20 years ago |

i first heard this song on the re-release of dear you, and i always thought of it as one of the weaker songs, but the last line is absolutely perfect, and just leaves me loving the song - i wanna be your shrink so i'll get paid to watch you think. ....just beautiful |

| Jets to Brazil – The Frequency Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
this song is the start to one of my all-time top 5 records, and is yet another quality jets song, so im surprised no-one has commented on it yet! i think that the first verse is something that many songwriters have experienced - the 'emptiness of the room' represents his life and the way he is feeling trapped with nothing there to comfort him. he is trying to write, but there is no base to it - no 'canvas' to use as the background to a song. eventually 'beautiful demons fly ouy' and he is able to write a song about the city, and a feeling of isolation - he does not identify with the 'city kids.' (although the city life being compared to a 'sugar high' kinda makes the idea of city life as isolating for him less credible....) All of the drug references are probably to do with the depression that he has battled through his life, as amphetamines are anti-depressants. anybody agree/disagree with me? |

| Jets to Brazil – Sea Anemone Lyrics | 20 years ago |

I can't remember where but i remember hearing that this song was written about the ending of jawbreaker, which i think makes better sense of the line 'you can even keep the name.' Also the old shoes he could never fill could be about the direction jawbreaker took after his operation possibly. don't slate me for this - just putting forward a possibility. you can read it as being about a girl too - that was what i thought before i heard the other idea... This was the first jets song i heard, and it blew my mind - so much emotion, so much power, just amazing |

| Jets to Brazil – Orange Rhyming Dictionary Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Thanks guys for the explanations - this was another one of the jets songs that has so much floating below the surface that i had missed! i love the line 'with a bag of beer held like the last girl on earth' because it reminds me of one of my friends who takes his drinking really seriously, and won't let anyone touch his beer, but with blake there is a purpose to the serious nature of his drinking - to escape the confusion in his mind. i really like the idea freeformcannon came up with of blake referencing back to the previous album to symbolise writers block in the process of writing the second album. it is hard to imagine someone as talented as blake having difficulty writing, but it is a major theme in his work, giving all the pretenders (myself included) hope! |

| Pedro the Lion – Priests and Paramedics Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I agree with everyone who loves this song - probably the best by pedro that i've heard, which is saying a lot, as every song is awe-inspiring. I think that an interesting thing in the song is that the priest who speaks at the end entirely misses the fact that the dead guy's kids are there - i think they are emblems for the fact that there are good things in life, and a kind of opposite to the nihilistic message that the priest gives. and i'm sure that the priest message is not the message that the song is supposed to convey | |
