I just love Coldplay's bridges... the sound of the music where he starts saying "I think I wanna change..." |

I always thought that tower was in reference to an ivory tower, again in the theme of loss of innocence. To me this is a sexual song... what's the one sin you can never take back? Loss of virginity. I like thinking that we're better defined by who we are now than by our pasts... "we're still innocent" |

I'm closest to prilla, too. I love the lyrics because it's so occam's razor: I want my love to look and sound like a movie? All righty, I'll make a movie out of my love! But the part I love the best is the harmony on "get by"... the first time I heard it, I thought, "mmmm" and then they repeat. Oh yeah! |

"sometimes it's so beautiful it hurts"... that's what this song is to me, yes sad, but no, not at all sarcastic. When everything's falling apart, sometimes the most terrible thing of all is the beauty all around us. If that's not enough... |

I think Trent uses "Pretty Hate Machine" to refer to women -- so here I originally interpreted Tori as referring to pregnancy. (Makes sense, in that context, that she'd be "hiding it well"). This song got me through the trama of rape; I had never seen the lyrics and so I heard them totally incorrectly. But to me "so small, couldn't stand it at all" was both a physical and an emotional reference: my body was too small, too young to stand that intrusion and my psyche also too small to hold in all the guilt, pain, and conflict. In our Judeo-Christian society, you're a virgin or a slut. As for boys on the left and right, the predators out there that would do that to a 17-yr-old, and in the middle, my boyfriend, who wasn't enough to protect me. |

For some reason I think of DDay imagery, when all of those soldiers were disgorged onto the beach and storming... I know they're not spies, but the imagery in this song is just as powerful, and that's where it connected in my head. |

Since the first time I heard it, this makes me think of Alice in Wonderland, the scene where the caterpillar is asking Alice riddles. Anybody else get that vibe? |
