| The Moody Blues – Nights In White Satin Lyrics
| 20 years ago
|
Justin Hayward wrote "Nights" when he was about 19. He wrote the song as he was going through a rather difficult breakup with a girl. At the same time, though, he'd met the woman who would eventually become his wife (and still is to this day.) He's often said that the song came out of the despair and excitement he was feeling at the time; one relationship ending, and another beginning. As for the title? Well, a woman he knew (he's never said whether she was the one he was breaking up with at the time...) had given him some white satin sheets. While he says they're very romantic and all, they didn't really work well when he had a day's growth of stubble on his chin! (He hated them, in fact!)
He also has said that the song took about as long to write as it took to play. He was up very late one night in his apartment, apparently fretting over his relationship situation, and, as he's put it, "...the song just came out." |

The song, according to Phil, is about his messy divorce at the time and nothing else. the hole album actually has hidden messages to his ex wife to get her to come back ... pretty creepy Phil |

i just looked it up.... wow i was kinda right..
The inspiration for the song was a combination between Sara Recor-Fleetwood who was Mick Fleetwood's then girlfriend (she later became his wife) as well as a friend of Stevie's, & Stevie's fondness for the name -- the song is in part a dedication to the spirit of an aborted child that would have been named Sara (hence the "Sara, you're the poet in my heart/Never change, never stop" & "there's a heartbeat, and it never really died" lines). I hope that helped to answer your question. Though of an intensely personal nature, it's such a beautiful song... has always been one of my favorites |

Stevie got the name from a novel she'd read - one of the characters was named Rhiannon. She liked the name and it inspired her to imagine this woman and write this song. After that she started finding out all this information about who Rhiannon actually is, and the bizarre coincidences between the Rhiannon of her song and the Rhiannon of the legend |

| Pink Floyd – Us and Them Lyrics

Us and Them" is about the difference between the poor and the wealthy, specifically the industrialized nations vs. third-world countries. Roger Waters, being the son of a socialist, was well aware of how nations with wealth squander it on wars and military buildup while millions of people go hungry. This song addresses this problem, and how we push aside those in need ( "out of the way, its a busy day, ive got things on my mind"). It also, very subtely, it addresses how leaders send troops off to war with little regard for them or their families; they are just "lines on the map". Waters would fully expand on this theme in "The Final Cut". |

"Down by the River", according to Young, has no special meaning other than he was trying to make a Canadian folk-rock type song that he used to enjoy listening to when he was a teen. |
