| I think that the great thing about this song is that not only is it a great melody with the lovely Franz Fedinand-mood - the lyrics are also provoking all you conservative homofobic guys who can't see the joke. Don't you think the FF-guys knew that they would get reactions like that for writing such obviously provoking lyrics? It made you listen, right? That's exactly what they wanted.. | |

do you know if Dylan was stoned when he wrote the song? Sounds like they were smoking quite a lot of joints at the time... Well, who wasn't? Anyway, if Dylan was stoned, it might just be utter ramblings of a man with enormous amounts of THC in his blood. I just can't figure it out. I think the idea about breaking down the social differences is good, but if Dylan stopped writing political songs years before that it doesn't seem as convincing. But he could have made an exception... Supporting this idea is the line about "businessmen drink my wine, Ploughmen dig my earth". The workers just work and the businessmen reap the goods of it.. But i'm not sure about anything.. |

I think that this song could be about, that even though you life (or maybe even the world) is screwed up, it's still good to be here. If it wasn't, there would be no reason to keep yourself from commiting suicide. "Sadness kills the superman, even fathers cry". It's allright to be sad. Just don't let it take over your life (Don't turn goth, hehe). By the way Denzil, Dio sings like he's some kind of knight. Ozzy emits an agonised wail, when he sings. So when you listen to Dio singing Ozzy-era songs (eg. on the record Live Evil), it sounds wrong. Technically he's a much better singer than Ozzy (Ozzy can't sing - he learned it) but that's exactly what's wrong. The Dio-era songs are allright, but I don't think they belonged in Black Sabbath. I want to end this with a story about this lyric. When the bassplayer Geezer Butler wrote it (he wrote almost every Ozzy-era lyric), he phoned Ozzy and read it to him, 'cause he thought it was good (which I agree with). When Geezer had finished the first stanza, Ozzy answered him: "Are you reading this sh*t from a book?" Marvelous geniouses, they were (and are). |

My opinion on StH is based on the hint in the end. "To be a rock and not to roll".. The original meaning of the term "Rock'n'Roll" is Rock as in rock music, and roll as in bankroll. In that sense you should live for rockmusic, and not the money that is associated with it. This is of course not to be taken literally, but means that you should live for your passions, and not the money (or other fame or other bonuses). The lady who's buying the stairway, is the mislead individual. The songbird is maybe other people (or her conscience), telling her that it is bad, and "her thoughts are misgiven). I see many other people talking about the piper as a God. However, i don't see him as positive. A piper will hypnotize you (like the piper in the fairytale, who makes all the rats follow him - I don't remember what it's called), thereby stealing your free will and making you a slave - just like record companys bind artists to contracts. I don't know if you agree with this (you probably don't - seems everybody has their own opinion on this song), but I just ocurred to me when I watched the DVD, and Robert Plant in the end of the song says "never roll people". Seems he wanted to make a point of it. Also, to all the people who think it is about Lord Of The Rings - I don't. Zep often talks about parts of LOTR (eg. Battle of Evermore) in lots of other songs, but I see it as metaphors for other stuff. Who would write an epic song about someone else's work? I won't say if it's the best or worst. That depends on your mood, when you listen to it. I mean - It's not a party song. However, listen to the music, get carried away, lay back, relax and enjoy. It's a good song. When I heard it the very first time, it was in my mind for a week or so. It's very beautiful. |
