| Orchid – None More Black Lyrics

This song and the liner notes you mentioned are a pretty obvious nod to some prevailing ideas in technology philosophy, particularly those presented by proponents of the Frankfurt School, an institution often referenced in Orchid's music. The inclusion of themes encircling desire specifically invoke the work of Marcuse, who argued that our society's industrial production apparatus is driven by market forces that emphasize the fulfillment of "false needs." According to Marcuse, this practice is analogous to totalitarian oppression in that it necessarily suppresses individuality and is psychologically invasive. This is similar to another Frankfurt School thinker, Adorno, who Marcuse cites when asserting that the mass-production of culture leads to the marginalization of dissent.
Essentially, the existence of dissent is assured (if not standardized), and is even incorporated by the forces in power. Dissent is assured, but also assuredly marginalized, or pushed away and often made obscure. |

Ask yourself, What is Raein doing writing a song about Kurt Cobain and grunge? If that doesn't seem ridiculous to you, then what are you doing listening to Raein? |

| Orchid – Tigers Lyrics

My anecdote is potentially the saddest...
I'm an undergrad philosophy major, and the pseudo-intellectuals I run into aren't even sophisticated enough to have heard of people like Adorno, Foucault, or Marcuse. Hell, there are actual Ph.D. candidates around here that know nothing about these people.
The important thing to remember is that as long as we engage in this kind of questioning- that we question our being at all- we can avoid the problems that arise when the line between false intellectuals and actual thinkers becomes obscure. Our ideas aren't a commodity if we don't treat them that way. |

In case anyone is interested, these same themes are also addressed by Marcuse, particularly in his work called "One Dimensional Man." Marcuse was also a member of the Frankfurt School. |

| Sinaloa – Teeth To Tongue Lyrics

This song is about how people generally don't let those who are important know exactly how much they mean to each other, and how our society doesn't really cultivate that kind of expression.
He is saying that whether or not he says the words himself there are indeed people that are important to him. The imagery of the volcano at the end is passionate, and invokes the intensity of those feelings. The looming threat of the volcano is palpable for the people that live around it regardless of whether or not it erupts. He is expressing how he tries to make the people around him feel as though they are important to him even though he rarely tells them. |

Very similar to the teachings of the philosopher T. Adorno. The artist constantly feels homesick everywhere. It's not a bad thing to feel out of place or to clash with your surroundings. |

I really don't see how this song fits in with the rest of Ghostships. Were the lyrics changed to fit in with the themes of Manipulator? Maybe Part VI will tie it in somehow. |

This song is what makes Manipulator work. Manipulator is comprised of material that sounds like their old work, material that is an obvious progression of their old sound, and material that draws heavily from other sources of inspiration. They have everything you could possible want. So, being not only a fall of troy fan, but a music fan, I enjoy this song and every other song on Manipulator. |

It seems as though the lyrics are referring to the band trying to define their place in punk music. "It's never too late to be early" probably refers to how bands are considered to before their time and such. As in, they are progressive and trying new things before these things will inevitably become popular.
"My fingers are blistered and bleeding there’s no longer discomfort you brought me" refers to how they believe they are trying really hard at making good music and take solace in that, whether their critics like it or not. They want to express how they want to make music they want to play and not nestle down in some predetermined genre.
Not every song is about a girl. I know, crazy. |

Guys, 1977 was the year when punk music was supposedly "born." '77 bands are bands like Ramones, New York Dolls, Sex Pistols, etc. Some of the earliest bands in punk music.
Yes, I know there are other '77 bands. Yes, I know there were punk bands before '77. That's just the general term. It isn't those other idiot things you all mentioned. |

Those letters are missing because some kind of ash fell on the copy of The Navidson Record that Truant had and burned holes in a few pages talking about the Holloway Tapes. If you read House of Leaves it explains this; Truant just leaves blanks where the holes were rather than filling in the actual words Zampano wrote. |

| The Fall of Troy – Ghostship Pt II Lyrics

First of all, I totally agree.
Ghostship Pt. II is where we first get a glimpse at what happens to the crew after their ship sinks. It seems that the crew goes insane and begins to kill each other. Their features become distorted and they feed off of one another in a paranoid frenzy.
It's clear that this world that the crew is transported to is inhabited by some kind of force that is responsible for causing the madness in them. We hear the thoughts of one of the crew members in Pt. IV, and it seems as if a Demon is talking to him directly. We see the carnage in Pt. II, and discover the cause to that carnage in Pt. IV. |

The Ghostships are some of the Fall of Troy's best works, and are slated to be released together (I, IV, and V were released on an EP and II is played live by the band)). I've only heard 4 of them, but I think there will eventually be something like 7 or 8 of them; please correct me if I'm wrong.
Anyway, I've gathered that they tell the story of the unfortunate crew of a ship (I'm guessing some kind of battleship or pirate ship, seeing as how the crew is armed and fire their weapons) and their encounter with a Ghostship. The inhabitants of the Ghostship (or perhaps the ship itself) then attack the unsuspecting crew.
Ghostship Pt. I introduces the characters of the ensuing story and logs their initial meeting with the Ghostship. A fight breaks out, then a crew member notices that the ship begins to sink. The crew is then transported to this surreal, dreamlike Hell world that we see in the later chapters. |

I think this is my favorite FoT song. The Ghostships tell and excellent story about an encounter between the crew of a ship and another Ghostship and all of the crazy shit that goes down.
The songs have kind of a dreamlike element to them, as if the characters are trapped in some kind of Hell. The songs can get pretty creepy at times.
I think this particular Ghostship tells the story of one of the crew members who goes insane and hears the voice of some demon in his head. I assume that the stanzas beginning with "God's not a goldmine..." are the things the demon is telling the character of the story. |

Well, they DID switch from a punk label (Epitaph) to a mainstream label (Columbia) on a very lucrative contract. I guess that's "selling out," whatever that means.

That's not entirely true. It's about how people don't work together or cooperate. "Melt with your minds, melt with each other." This means that we need to help each other out in life. "Don't be surrounded, don't be so alone." This means that it's okay to be independent and self-sufficient, but it's also necessary to help out one another. |
