Well, the song was a number one hit. But it's the nature of the song that might make one think that. It sort of has its place, but it's not something you hear on the radio every day. Aswell the fact that George Michael refused to appear in a video for the song. The lyrics encompass the song's message so effectively, that I don't think a video would have been a particularly good idea anyway. The song is, thankfully, not about a particular event, but sort of a commentary on the state of the world, the culture, and the media's effect on us. He says this is the year of the guitly man, where the television takes its stand. I may be wrong, but based off of what Michael's sad, aswell as my own interpetation, I think it's about the media programming us to believe things are a certain way, and we are guilted in various ways - always as a way to get into our pockets, or make us go along with something. He says charity is a coat you wear twice a year. Charity is a fashionable thing to do, and everyone will dress up for the occasion once or twice a year, but is change in their hearts? Do they truly care or understand the full gravity of the world's plight? Maybe what is over there is also over here, but they don't at all realize it. We are mesmerized and distracted, distracted by the things we must obtain before it's too late. We're hiding behind our posessions, our faux sense of security, so we scream from behind our doors with a defensive scream to the world outside. We cling to the things they sold us because, afterall, God stopped keeping score. God comes into the story quite interestingly. My interpretation is that God, not knowing what was to occur, turned his back for a moment, and his children (possibly Adam and Eve, if you like) crept out the back door, out of touch, and became lost in the world and its darknesses. It is as if we've made such a mess of everything, that God stopped keeping tabs on who's doing what. And he won't return because he has no one to come back for. Of course, it only seems that this is the case, and it is true in the virtual sense. I don't think that he is criticising God for anything, but rather, the lyric is meant to illustrate the state of mankind. That it would be a wonder if God were still with us. |

Clearly, the song is about George Bush. It's a pretty tame attack though. I find people get after Bush for the lesser faults. Anyway, the song is excellent, and at first I thought it was anti-God, but then realized it wasn't once I read the lyrics and what people had to say about it here. |

Clearly, the song is about the fakeness of hollywood. My interpretation of the song was influenced by that idea from the beginning because I first heard the song via the video. Even then, I would have known anyway since the lyrics are fairly direct. But personal interpretation is great. I don't have any variation on this particular song, though. |

It's about the New World Order, the concept that becomes clear once one takes the red pill and unplugs themselves from the fake illusion of reality. We are fast approaching a paradigm shift. Soon what you thought your country stood for will be no more. Terrorism, war in the middle east, it's all New World Order activity going on right under people's noses. It's because we listen to mainstream media too often, I'll tell you folks, the only reason I sometimes watch mainstream news is for clues on what could possibly be coming next. It's a great song, and it's good to hear Maynard talking about it in his music. He hit the nail right on the head, I know a lot of people that would be as the son, told to lay their head and rest, be ignorant, by the Government. You can interpret this song in different ways, but you cannot deny that in all likelihood, it is about what's going on concerning the US, it is about a New World Order. But that is the beauty of a song, you could believe it's about something completely different. |

I could be way off, but I'll try. You could attribute this song to a lot of situations, it's generally about what we've become I think. "Fight the fight alone When the world is full of victims Dims a fading light in our souls" Meaning selfishness when we could be fighting the fight in unity? Helping one another? "Leave the peace alone How we all are slowly changing Dims a fading light in our souls" Decreasing peace over time, and everyone's getting worse? "In my opinion seeing is to know The things we hold are always first to go And who's to say we won't end up alone?" Self explanatory. "Cry ourselves to sleep We will sleep alone forever Will you lay me down? In the same place with all I love Mend the broken homes Care for them, they are our brothers Save the fading light in our souls" Unhappy, unsatisfied with everything. It's not too late, we can turn things around and create a better world. "In my opinion seeing is to know What you give will always carry you And who's to say we won't survive it too?" This is also quite self explanatory. And the chorus? Who knows. :P |

| Yeah I think it has something to do with God and Jesus ect. I wish the artists would come forth with the meanings of every song right away at release. That way we can stop speculating and just discuss it. But eh, we still get to express what it means to us. Which is sort of creative. | |

| I believe this song is simple. It's about being yourself, because well, it's all that you can do. This is a great tune, but there are better Audioslave songs, by far. Kind of like with Default, they use the most mainstream, broader appeal tunes. I don't know, that's good for bands, not good for me. | |
