I love how the last few lines of this song carry so much hope. ProudestMonkey1 was spot on with the Northern Lights meaning - I love toir's use of this beautiful metaphore. I also like the America interpretation, I think a lot of Tori's songs, and I guess songs in general, can have meanings on personal and larger levels. Although I dont think the woman is ok with what she's become or doesn't feel ashamed. I think the exploitation has kind of drained the spirit from her and she feels like she's betrayed herself and has become somewhat worthless. But deep down she knows she's worth more than that and there's still hope left for her - 'tell the northern lights to keep shining' |

This is one of my favourite joni songs, i agree, its beautiful. I love the line: "I am not some comission Like a statue in a park I am flesh and blood and vision I am howling in the dark" For me it just sums up the natural human desire to be appreciated and loved. |

dont question? just listen and praise? thats kind of ironic, since this song is basically about questioning. "there is no time for hatred, only questions" I think its about people in power, such as presidents, CEOs and such, being corrupt and believing that they're allmighty and righteous, but in reality, they'll pay for their actions in the after life. It's about people who are "preaching love like hate" to quote joni mitchell lol...and the hope that they'll get what they deserve. |

No one has mentioned the kd lang version of this song yet - its so beautiful, definately my favourite because its just pure and simple, so it conveys the emotion really well. The Jeff Buckley and kd lang versions have different lyrics, so i want to know who wrote those verses, anyone know? My favourite line is "I've seen your flag on the marble arch, our love is not a victory march, its a cold and broken hallelujah" |
