| The Pretenders – Pack It Up Lyrics | 13 years ago |

Wow, I recognized that "cruel to be kind" might be a reference to Nick Lowe, but I never thought the song might be about him! The lyrics make more sense if they're addressing the music industry rather than an ex. I have a version of this song called the "Radio Mix" and it just removes the vocals. Without them, you hear that the entire song is backed by a set of cheesy radio ads. (You can hear that at the beginning and end of the original too.) I hadn't been able to figure out why they made that choice, but now it seems perfect as a critique of commerciality in rock. |

| Haha oh God. Sorry about that. I read it wrong elsewhere. | |
| Brandon Flowers – Crossfire Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I have no insights on the meaning of the song, but I must say that the phrase "between the crossfire" really bothers me. You can't really be between things that are going back and forth. I assume he means "in the crossfire between heaven and hell," although that wouldn't work poetically. I do like the song though =) | |

The French lyrics are just the English chorus: J'veux ton amour, et je veux ta revanche J'veux ton amour, I don't wanna be friends And in the second part of verse 2 I think it's "...your vertigo stick" and "Want you in my rear window; baby it's sick" (Psycho, Vertigo, and Rear Window are all famous Alfred Hitchcock movies) |

| Five for Fighting – Slice Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| To me this is a tribute to the songs that brought people together, from all different "slices" of the population...maybe back before genres had so divided what people were listening to. The bridge seems to me like it could be making specific references...Band on the Run, Moondance, and Summer Breeze are what I thought of immediately, although I didn't recognize what "top-down lovers" would refer to. And of course American Pie is the main one. But this song, which mentions blogs and online-only friendships, seems very relevant in the age when everyone has their own iPod they're listening to. Maybe he's just wishing people would share music more directly. | |

| Bearhunter's idea fits with the video...it's mostly a bunch of guys at a bar. | |
| Beck – Girl Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Has anyone heard the Guerolito remix? Maybe it's because I just read Hamlet, but I could swear that there's a woman whispering "sweets to the sweet" starting about one minute before the song ends (at 2:57). This line is said by a grave, so it fits with all the death idea. | |
| Beck – Girl Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| When I first saw the video, I thought he was just trying to do some visual gags and ignoring the meaning of the song, but the second time I saw it, I realized that he might be trying to convey that things are often the opposite of how they seem. I mean, the song is upbeat and at first sounds light and happy, but if you pay attention to the lyrics, he's killing someone. And in the video, many positive things are compressed to show the negative hidden message. Just a thought. | |
