unarici, you realize there's an unspoken "imo" tag to everyone else's interpretation, yeah? everyone goes through something which connects them to this song, whether the situation was anything like yours or not. one-sidedness sucks, so does condescending when you can't accept someone else's view point. IMO, this song's about attachment. he's had someone wrapped in his mind for the longest but he was never able to get under her skin enough to call it an "official" relationship--it's more like friends with benefits. she has problems of her own (maybe he father died and her mom started collecting cats) and she plays men like games (i know this is highly unlikely. i'm putting myself in his shoes here, so let's pretend that females do this when really it's the men who're usually womanizing demons), hence the line "i know this is not the only story you can tell". he's been living for her and he knows that he has two more years left in the town in which they live -- maybe because he wants to transfer to a college far, far away and he's in the process of attaining his associates degree to do so. the pronoun "we" looks like it's just a safe ground more than it is literal. he's referring to himself because once he leaves, she will no longer be in his life, meaning the problems she faces on her own can't be of his concern anymore. "remove those scars from your arms" -- she had those scars before he came in to the picture and he realized that he can't do anything about them. she's jaded and his efforts to change her ways are just driving him in to the ground, jading him as well ("i've become crueler since i've met you"). when he first met her, none of her bad traits/habits showed...but as he got "closer", the golden exterior greyed (song reference!) and by the time he realized she wasn't what he thought she was in his blurred vision, he was already attached to her. this part gives it all away: "we cover our lies with handshakes and smiles we try to remember our alibis we tell lies to our parents who hide in their rooms we bury our secrets in the garden of course we could never make this love last i said of course we could never make this love last the only love we know is love for ourselves we bury our secrets in the garden" after a one night stand/passionate love-hate making session, they'd run in to each other in a coffee shop where she just happens to work and they'd talk to each other with a glaringly obvious mask: it never happened. the lying to the parents part is again a self-reference. the "we" is something he'd like to believe, but really he's just talking about himself. maybe he snuck out to see her during high school, thus lying to his parents, and when she stood him up his entire fleet sunk and his parents would try to cheer him up ("hide in their rooms" is a metaphor). the rest of it's just an ayn rand-type objectivist theory. hahaha. but really: he wants out. he has no intentions on changing his mind about her while he's still in walking distance of her house. he just wants to get out--far and away from her-- and it'll be two years until he does. |

oh wow, i've been ducking under the radar on the omb for way too long. the cracked actor theory went over my head entirely until just now. i stopped paying attention to clandestine/5 flowers about midway each, and decided to drop them entirely once the person who actually had a decent suggestion was sought out to be fake (i think his name was 'timecode' or something). moving along, the only stage death i can think of is the story of hamlet, and that obviously wasn't suicide. my bets are on the "clues to the next big thing" idea. they usually do cheesey things like that, anyway-- 336, the missing frame in that spooky mummy video (WHICH, by the way, freaking pops up when you put i heard a voice in to the computer...scary stuff, i just got the chills)...they even reference their own songs in their songs. i say sit back and let it unfold, chances are there'll be an answer next album. :) |
