To me the song is about a person who is a hater. "negative why always so negative?" Someone said something about how they suck or how easy it is to do what they do. This person probably disses other things that he is not good at. "if you have problems, why don't you just solve them? beat me up at least you won't be out of touch" Pretty much challenging this guy to fight him if he has a problem. "if you're such a poet, use your tongue and show it" Or if you don't want to fight and you think it is so easy why don't you write a successful song about how much I suck? "do this thing, this type of thing put a little money in this type of thing" Try what I do. If it is so easy to be an artist do it. Put a little money and time into and perform. "i got nothing to worry about i got nothing to worry about" The singer knows its not easy to be an artist. He wont be replacing the singer anytime soon so he has nothing to worry about. "trouble seems, trouble seems to follow you it's always 'round you like something you subscribe to" Someone who is negative or a pessimist is always going to be surrounded by bad happenings. They bring it on themselves or "subscribe" to it. "be prepared there must be something in you turning boys to men and then back again" The douche makes guys angry at him then when he leaves they are alright. Anyways that is what I think the song is about. Great song either way. |

Whiteshadow is on the right track about the song referencing the Odyssey. Here is my stab at the meaning. Obviously it is about getting high. He says: "I've found a new way" Now you can take this one of two ways. Option 1 is that he discovered a completely new way to get high. Or option 2 is that he personally discovered a new a way for himself to get high. Meaning a new way for him but not new to the world. Which could just be a new drug that he personally has never tried before. I'm gonna go with option 2 because it fits with what I'm trying to say and makes more sense to me. In the story of the Odyssey Ulysses(Odysseus) has a hard time getting home. You might say he takes an extended "trip" to get home. So if you put this into the reference of the song he is saying he is getting high for an extended period of time. He is tripping. "You're never going home" In the Odyssey Ulysses does indeed finally reach home. But the song states otherwise for the narrator. This leaves a few different interpretations. The one that I think fits is that now that he is on this trip(drug) he is not getting off. Therefore at the end of the song he realizes that he is not Ulysses because he is not going home (being sober,stop using the drug) Anyway that is just my opinion. Btw this is a good song. |

I don't think this is about the media but rather the record companies. A few lines in particular make me think this. "When convincing me That you're on my team" Doesn't seem like he would be talking about the media here. At first glance you could assume that he is talking about his band mates but when you look at these lines in conjunction with my next quote you get a sense of the bigger picture. "Buy and trade men's souls" Although its just business to the execs the music is the soul of the musicians that they sign and release. "Rich and growing sicker Sell the dead ones quicker" They get rich from the music obviously but more important is the second line. If the artist dies at the height of popularity aka Kurt Cobain you will sell albums at an even faster rate. |

"20 hours won't print my picture milk carton size Carton size, carton size" I think this line refers to the fact that if layne died no one would go looking for him. they wouldnt put his picture on a milk carton cause they would know exactly what killed him. "Call me up congratulations ain't the real why There's no pressure besides brilliance let's say by day 9 Endless corporate ignorance lets me control time By the way, by the way, by the way" The record company called him up to see if he was alright. but they didnt care about his health they just wanted to know if he could make some more hit songs for them. brillance is the pressure put on him by the company and day 9 is when he'll come out. because the record company doesnt know wtf is going on layne says when he will do stuff and how long it will take. "Once again you see an in, discolored skin gives you away So afraid you kindly gurgle, out a date for me" I think the discolored skin might be the record companys turning red indicating that they are angry with layne. but they are afraid he will quit so they kindly suggest a day that he may come to work. "I bear true and an existing witness to this barrel of monkeys. A self proclaimed immoral success, perfected by each whereof individually deadly and equally so and spread about the surrendered troops, for even thousands of miles will not tear apart their communication, or the lack thereof." He is proof of his own life. he is a success even though an immoral one because of his drug addiction. he's been conditioned to be like this by all these people who seem to communicate with each other on how to keep layne this way. "Vultures, liars, thieves, each proclaim their innocence In no suggestion or rhyme, your weapon is contained in the wrecking of the keeping the desired effect. The breaking of the spirit thwarts the whole being. Your weapon is guilt, your weapon is guilt, your weapon is guilt. Guilt." All these people feed off laynes success but none claim their responsible for layne being the way he is. they like to keep layne broken and sad so he can keep producing good songs. They make him feel guilty to make him do stuff. Thats what I get from the song. who knows but layne what it means. |

Of course its satirical. goodness. Its obvious. Maybe you guys should take the advice of the song. For one everything is posed as a question in the song. He is asking someone who ponders commiting suicide is your life this bad. If it is you might as well kill yourself. But the reasons for killing yourself he poses are stupid. Just like killing yourself is stupid. "Cause life is a game that no one wins But you deserve a headstart the way your life's goin' So throw in the towel cause your life ain't shit No take that towel and hang yourself with it Life's short and hard like a body-building elf So save the planet and kill yourself If you're feeling down-and-out with what your life's all about Lift your head up and blow your brains out" Usually people who commit suicide or think about it think about how alone and unique their cause for commiting it is. But he is saying that everyones life sucks so get used to it. He says the stupid stuff to make you realise how stupid it is to commit suicide not to be telling people who do the stupid stuff that they should commit suicide. |

i think that stoolhardy has the right idea here. The singer cant fit into main stream soceity cause he thinks its dumb basically. "i've learned all my lessons before now" he's learned about life and how to live it before now but now he cant conform. he cant just go get some stupid job and work there forever. "And you just don't get it you keep it copacetic And you learn to accept it You know it's so pathetic" other people dont get where he is coming from. they just go about their lives like normal. he is the only one who sees a problem here. "What good is confidence? " what good is confidence? i think what he means in this sentence is what good is arrogance. people who are confident to an extreme so that they are cocky. |

When he says "we chase misprinted lies" he is referring to what people think is important in their life and what they want. When youre young you think of getting rich and becoming famous but laynes sayin it aint all its cracked up to be. notice in both those lines he puts we. he is talking about everyone. the second line is literal, we all face time. what i think the rest of the first verse means is that layne is actually fighting what he talked about in the previous line. Time. Everyone grows older and dies and I suspect at this time in his life Layne didnt want to die. he feels alienated and like no one else is concerned with this problem. the second verse is about his lack of privacy and him being who he is. No one can change who they are. If layne cant be himself why even exist? Thats what i think anyway. its a great song no matter what it means. |

well i belive this song is about the way the media treated layne. they all called him a herion junkie which was true but was rather harsh he thought. "you're right as rain but you're wrong to blame agreed my crime's the same my sins i'll claim give you back shed pain go find a place for own shame, yeah so you can deal with this thing unreal no one made you feel any hurt, yeah" step by step this means. you are all correct i am a junkie. but what gives you the right to judge me. i'll take responsibility for my actions. stop criticizing me and worry about your own self. i never did anything to you. "now you hear me for the things i see yeah, i believe in inner peace, yeah" layne tells them what he stands for. not for herion use or for drugs at all but for peace and understanding. and that was one of his biggest wants =to be recognized for his accomplishments and not herion. |

I'm fairly sure by the words this song is about his girlfriend who died. for instance: "Can you protect me when I'm wrecked I pretend you're still alive" layne saying that when he gets high on herion that he lies to himself and pretends his girlfriend is still alive. wrecked in this case would be getting high. "Clear all your sins Get born again Just repeat a couple lies" telling his girlfriend to hurry up and get born again and come back to him. she can repeat all the early part of her life and pick up where her and layne left off. |
