I definitely believe this is about the loss of a relationship due to drunkness. The "Port" refered to during the song is talking about wine. Though the lyrics seem (and title) seem to point to an epiphany during drunkness. It seems like he's already lost this girl. I mean the whole part of tearing/staring up the walls comes before washing it down. Maybe it's simply self-medicating. He drinks merely to forget this girl, but can't because in his while he drinks he realizes he still loves her. |

| Smoke Or Fire – The Patty Hearst Syndrome Lyrics
| 18 years ago

I love this song. It is talking about someone who chooses to take their parents lifestyle over another group ("the wrong group" as coined by thursdayfan4life). But that simplistic and isn't the whole story...it's about kind of being pissed about how somehow will take a stand for something important (like Patty Hearst feeding the poor) but the second things get bad (like getting arrested for picking up a gun and robbing a back) they turn their back on the cause and immediately go right back to their "silver spoon" (which to me is the wrong group and this is the wrong way to go about things). If you take a stand for something, it should be for something you believe in and you shouldn't get special treatment because you're rich. Patty Hearst got a full pardon from Clinton while the rest of the SLA are probably rotting in jail, and why because she's rich!!! What crap! |

| Propagandhi – Ladies' Nite in Loserville Lyrics

I found this link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SS3LwJ4DGAs) and Chris says at the beginning "pro-feminist, pro-sex." So I began to look at the lyrics a little bit and started to think along those lines. I think what's being said here is that it's okay to stand up for women's rights, and it's okay to enjoy the act of sex. The problem is pornography. The idea that women should be subject to be sexual slave is one that is being criticized "Fuck Larry Flynt..." Larry Flynt being the publisher of the pornographic magazine "Hustler" as well as the "needle dick with (selective) first admendments"-he wanted the first admendment (free speech) to cover pornograph so that he could effectively "...silence women [from] standing up and fighting back." The other parts seem to yes be like in a bar (Hence "Ladies Nite In Loserville", many bars offer "ladies nites") and the one is there pissed off at the fact that this guy (or possibly these guys) keep trying to a) dance around the fact that they want sex and b) are trying to impress her. It's the same intent as the big, strong man thing, except in a different form. In this form women aren't in need of physical protection, but need to protect from the "bad men who want to use them for sex." But all these guys hide behind the veil of feminism(which it isn't) saying that to protect women is to be better. But instead of treating women like equals they treat them like inferiors. They want women who aren't able to fend for themselves at all and that's just as bad as Larry Flynt. It's a song about equality, true equality. |

| Avenged Sevenfold – Critical Acclaim Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
|
I just pose one simple question, which is why is it called critical acclaim? I posed it to myself and came up with a, maybe bizarre, answer. Could it be about the waywardness of the news, all for the sake of "critical acclaim". The idea that they would keep somethings quite (i.e. "shh quite you might piss somebody off") while reporting other things. Most of the lyrics I can interpret one way or another as fitting under this banner...the news has not only fed off of people's fears but has added to them and they quickly change their tune when things start going different all for the sake of ratings...nothing they say is actually factual statement, rather just stilted information gather to support the general consensus rather than refute or support marginalized ideas(which would just happen to be truth)...ultimately, I think it's a song that could and should make both sides question their opinion and rather than complain about things look for positive solutions, self-righteousness happens on both sides(not even democrat and republican)...which by the way the guy or girl who said this song is anti-Democrat...you may have wanted to take "telling them it's all for something real" as the Democrats got into power and did nothing...they were expected(by those who voted for them) to do something about Iraq, yet they capitulated to status-quo power...rather than the voters' power. Also, those who say this isn't a political song yet say that it bashes the "anti-flag" kind of mentality don't realize that that is taking a political stand (of what kind I don't know)...finally, for anyone who is "left-wing" and think this song is too conservative...it very well may be, but I don't think that a band who is really conservative could make it through a summer on warped tour...and have a positive thing to say about warped tour...because most of the bands on that thing are of the "anti-flag" kind...especially if, being i don't know when they were on, they went out with NOFX |

| The Lawrence Arms – Recovering The Opposable Thumb Lyrics

I think that this song is surprisely round about, which is great. The idea of the song, I think, is how we are humans and yet we refuse to act like it. The line about Toby Keith is obviously a reference to his stances on war, specifically that stupid song he wrote right after 9/11. I think that the line "How much evolution must we disprove" is actually questioning our actions, because they reflect those of animals rather than of enlightened human beings...of course this is just one interpretation...i think the best supporting evidence of it though is the last two verses, the dear mother lines are clearly talking about a war of some sort- I, of course, assume the actual war- which is such a primal and animalistic reaction to how to deal with each other.
Just a personal interpretation: "It's a wonderful hug when there's so much more to love
When there's steaks and hearts jammed in your face" I think is talking about veganism/vegetarianism |

I love this song. And as far as the homosexuality thing goes 1.) it's debasing to say "Gays are people too," as if we don't know that you wouldn't say "Blacks are people too," at least not unless you're willing to get punched in the face. 2.) Homosexuality is not a choice and God forbid we ever prove it's genetically based because then there are people who have it set to figure out that it is genetic and then alter gay's genetic makeup. I like what Chris Rock said one time about gay marriage he said, and I'm paraphrasing because it was a while ago "gays getting married isn't going to ruin the sanctity of marriage, not in America were we have tv shows about midgets getting married, who wants to marry a millionaire"...etc. Oh and if you like Gay rights music, check out Leftover Crack's Gay Rude Boys Unite...its excellent...finally my only problem with this song is that I don't understand what the fuck the problem is if it's not gender...God's the only thing I could come up with, which if you follow any holy book and are against gays then why are you so quick to legislate laws against them if you're so fucking holy, let us bask in the beauty of sodom and guammora(spelled wrong but i don't care) and you can ride you're puff cloud into heaven |

who the hell is straigt edge because of religion, you may be sober because of religion, but Ian of minor threat (who coined the term) hated fucking religion on top of that...i think truly this song is about hypocrisy and how there's nothing you can really believe in because in the end its hypocrisy "And all the boys in the straight-edge scene are in the basement huffing gasoline" or for the wrong purpose such as santa whose just a coporate tool to get people to buy things, on top of which christmas being in december is only so christanity could stomp out paganism, or the people in charge have no clue what the fuck to do (ie the whole stint about doctors not knowing what's wrong with you) it's easy to attack religion because it throws its weight around (with things like the Catholic League) but LOC takes shots at anything that can be believed in, esstentially rely on yourself...oh and I am straight edge, but I don't huff gasoline in my basement, because I don't have a basement |

Despite anyones misgivings about the idea of Mediocre Generica being called "Shoot the Kids at Your School" and its album artwork(Which was supposed to be an arm carrying a gun, I think) they want no censorship and freedom of speech. Plus go listen to Gay Rude Boys Unite the line is in there and in proper contex makes sense(its no less violent), but honestly no one can who would do that can claim they are fighting against cenorship...which Tim Armstrong has, that hypocrisy is what makes people think he's dumb...and partially the reason for the attack here, the other part being that rancid really, at one point in time, was a fixture on radio stations (this was about the time of the "second coming of punk") plus people thought rancid was a knock off of the clash so that even lends itself more to what i think this song is talking about:about how we need options then the ones that record companies and radio stations give us and that monotony is harmful to society...so my suggestion turn off the tv and radio and create something new |

the line in the first chorus "you're turning your native music into a homophobic disgrace" is a reference to Buju Barton. He's a reggae artist from Jamacia that's signed to Hellcat Records. And when LOC left Hellcat they attack it for being homophobic and sexist and used him as proof. And the changed line in the second chorus about the hardcore scene could be a reference to the US Bombs who they said were also homophobic...homophobia is fucked up...the reason that people can get away with it is because of the bible, but then again people used the bible as reason for saying blacks were inferior and for the senseless murders in the south...great song though |

i think the use of lucid dreams is brillant...i think in a sense what he's talking about is that people have much more control over their destiny's than we believe we do...we choose to let these horrible things happen to ourselves adn are immediate response is "fate" or "someone else create this problem for me" hence lines like "I pushed my hand through the thorns to crush the final rose.
A deadly secret only I suffer to know"...it's either that which would give depth to the song and sounds more AFI esque than the idea of him just simply present the idea of lucid dreams...lucid dreams are a metaphor...our entire lives are lucid dreams( of course to an extent in lucid dreams it is believe that if you think something it exist in the nature that you thought it...we cant think something into exist but still its metaphorical) |

to me this song is obviously about depression and not only that but self inflicted depression through wanting to stand out, or be alone- basically through isolation, now someone said something about the chinese zodiac and davey's birth year, now under the idea of depression people really dont see an end in sight especially if its self created, so maybe he was just saying basically that he, at the time, felt dead, because of all the things he's says in the chorus |

i think this song is simply about corroputions of man through society, at least in our time, there are two different theories on the idea of corruption of man one is what i believe the song explains we're born pure then we become corrupted by society, the other is we're born corrupt and society keeps us from being complete sick freaks...anyway in that context the whole idea of the backward lines at the beginning make more sense because when we become concious people our worlds are bombarded with so many people trying to lead to the right direction that we kind of follow something whole heartedly straight into the ground, well thats what i think... |

this song is about, to me at least, about how in theses hostile political times you're forced to choose a side to be on whether you like it or not. no one allows you to be neutral, or just stay out of it, you're either republican or democrat and thats it. the bridge is about and where the song gets its name is about how this war will be end or death of america, and he(buddy) is pleading that america shouldn't do this to itself |

i think it could be more than about what everyone thinks, and what i think...serj likes to use abstract poetry as lyrics its kind of insane, but its so much more intelligent than half the other ridiculous crap out there. i think that this is about organized religion, specifically christianity. but for one thing muslims do view jesus as a prophet, however their messiah was muhommad(sorry if its spelled wrong, im ingnorant), and i only know that since my best friend is muslim. but it does seem that churches have corrupted what a great message the bible has. (and im agnostic) the end of the song is where all this is proven "the falling(or corruption) of christ." but it encompasses any and all religions because each follows a christ like figure(moses, muhammod, etc[again i know there are more leaders i just don't know who the are]) "the following of a christ" |

yeah it is about having faith in something, and is against science. it is, however, not ignorant in any sense. think about if it weren't for science war would be confined to close range combat. it's also science that has inhanced our weapons, etc. so with all that soad seems to stand for this song coincides with those other beliefs. also once you lose faith in everything we become a deslote people willing to anything we're told, because what's the point of fighting back if theres nothing to put our faith into...even though sometimes its delusional faith. |

i do believe the song is about someone whos one drugs and the narrator which is most likely jay whats to just yell and scream at the person because they are where they are and he thinks its wrong "I want to sing into you eyes your dilated eyes, die criminal die" he also thinks that drugs are a way of hiding from reality, "are you the kind of man who would cry fake tears to save your eyes from the sight of your own blood" whats werid, or that i find weird about this song is the bridge, when it says "canto funebre, forever we march" what i don't understand is why he forever we march, i understand why he might sing at a funeral but the other part confuses me...oh and per sempre marciamo is forever we march...but i definitely think its about a friend or someone close doing drugs |

i think this song is about hope...and its kind of funny because it is just like thrice's melting point of wax because they're both about icarus...its all about having ambitions and not settling for what people tell you what you can and cant do...thats why the opening lines are "ill put you back in your place..." someone in power or above you is telling you exactly where you belong, "we'll ride a thousand miles to find out we are empty..." which in the case of icarus if he were to ride a thousand miles(into the sky because his goal was to touch the sun) he would see all the stars and the unending beauty of space, and he would realize his life is nothing like that beauty, "...and if i wrote out our sins it would read a thousand lies" meaning if he wrote down what everybody told him he was doing wrong it would be lies, there isn't anything wrong with dreaming...the first verse is just saying that if you could accomplish your dreams where would you be and what would you do...like having the unattainable girl "...if you could have her..." now the second verse "losing atmosphere eyes full of stars" is just saying that you can always be full of hope, and dreams....i love this song it explains the artwork to the album...its all very center the story of icarus...the front of the cover is a burning pair of wings...and icarus incompasses the theme of the a types...which are personality types that are restless, impatiented, and aggressive...something that i think icarus was |

my feelings on this song are mixed. not because im wondering wether to love the song or not...i love it..its one of the greatest songs ive ever heard...now the lyrics confuse me...the line "daughters starve their waist lines" is obviously talking about bulmia or anorexia. i think in the scheme of the song it has to do with two things, the inability to control impulse this idea being cement by the bridge "....low in distress on impulse to control." this makes me think that he's talking about depression kind of makes u do anything to end it...i also think that i has something to do with relationships today, and their lack of intamicity or lack of space..."you pull so close to mercy excessive touch and steady looks to charm" the line saying "...building a reputation beyond disguise..." is kind of what happens when you have no control and someone (daughters in this case) they just do whatever they want (have sex) all the time and they start building a reputation (as a slut) but this person feels bad about what theyve done so they repress what theyve done they "paint black lucid (or clear) dreams with open legs" except theyre not dreams, they are reality...but since theyve been repressed they come back as dreams or in some cases nightmares...now the chorus sounds to me as a warning saying as sound as your born "breath from coma" you have to live life which at times is really bad, and all of us that are here before you are trying to get rid of the pain of our pasts "open to the curse we live to sever" but if you keep away from the bad people you'll be alright "portray a life to close the portals to the ones bent on betrayal" so the over all message i get from this song is live how you want to live and dont let anyone tell you you're wrong..."the universe is shaping ample space depleting" |

the more i look at this song i do think its about death...at first i thought i was about immortality...because the whole deathless ones...now i think its more about death...and someone elses death...probably someone close to davey...because "[his] mind fights with the sparkle in the corner of [his] eyes" meaning he's crying...now simple the whole idea of throwing the sleep thing makes me think this could just be about depression...and there fore this could be the death of his spirit or soul...because when youre depressed u tend to either sleep a lot or very little...which seems to be his case...and the fact that the elegy is being sung to him makes me think that its not truly his death, though we always see our souls as seperate entities so thats still a possiblity, because if it were his death it would be sung for him...and as for the requiem at the end of the song, a requiem is a song for the dead, an elegy is a poem...so i think that he's just basically stating this is a requeim...no more no less.. |

im sorry for being nitpicky but some of the lyrics are wrong...and i believe that can lead to misinterpretation...for one it's "last rites," not "last rights." Last rites is a ceremony that takes place when a person is dying...a priest comes in and does his whole thing...this implies it has something to do with death...i also believe it connects the bridge "like hell..." because i think in most christian religions(and im agnostic now but i was born catholic) if you dont have the last rites performed theres a bigger chance that you're going to hell...another line that is wrong is "like starving wolves drowning sheep," it should be "...counting sheep" i think this is not only connects the whole sleep imagery but also says that we're dying animals (starving wolves) and salvation and our life source is just out of reach or we're doing nothing to continue on with our lives (counting sheep, since wolves will eat sheep, but instead they just sit there and count them while they're starving)...me personally think this song is about depression and hopelessness...they first few lines "There's a ligthning storm....like motorbikes" describes what its like to be depressed...then there is a whole bunch of lines that describe the hopelessness, the idea of a "forest fire burning..." and you just "lay there and scream..." because you have "nowhere to run" and its "pointless to hide" is very hopeless..."lost all desire" also describes hopelessness and depression...i think the line "intending to burn, pretending to fight it..." means that you have the intention of becoming better of doing something to rid yourself of the pain but you don't but you convince you mind that you are...as far as the bridge goes "like hell we are anxiously waiting" i think that they're anxiously waiting to be released from hell and feel good once more, "like hell burning silently strong" sometimes when you're depressed you don't ever tell anyone just how bad you feel, you just continue deal with it all by yourself..."Somehow we fell down by the wayside" somehow we got lossed or thrown into this awful place thats so hard to get out of " And somehow this hell is home" when you get so used to be down and feeling like crap you just assume that is natural and that is the norm for you...so that is my interpreation of this song |

| Thrice – A Living Dance Upon Dead Minds Lyrics

what i like about thrice is, like all good art, their music is open for interpretation...which is why so many people get so many different feelings from it...i feel that this song is talking about creativity...(hence a living dance upon dead minds) dead minds being those who don't use them or are not creative...i think thrice and ee cummings see love as the catalyst for creative (either the obtaining of it, lose of it, or fascination with it) hence the opening lines..."love everywhere exploding"(which is the what it kind of feels like when you're in love), "maims"(which it can do to you when you lose it), and "blinds" (which happens when you're extemely fascinated with it)...the line that makes this idea that its about creativity solid or viable is the line saying "who weilds a poem more huger than the grave," meaning if you leave behind something extremely creative it will make you live long pass the grave. as for the lines "but surely...punctual brains" the way i see it is that one cannot just forget about love, hence the line "but surely does not forget," and poets/artist can make the ordinary extraordinary "sleep, cannot be photographed," and creative people/minds hate boundaries hence their "disdain of labeling of punctual brains" punctual being those who have to come to sort of conculsion. as for "why it's love...disappear" lines i think this is an expression of how short a time you have to be creative...the second the sun shows up its gone...well thats my explanation...and if you don't like well thats fine...but you know what...try to look beyond what everyone else thinks |
