Hmmmm.... is it about big corporate donations to charities/good causes, thinking they can pay off the blame? "Throw coins in the wishing well for us."
Example: BP's disgusting advertising campaign telling us how much they're doing for sustainable energy research. THANKS BP, YOU ENVIRONMENTAL HEROES! |

"YOU ARE A FOOL! YOU ARE A FOOL!" the way thom sings this line is hilarious - great song. Could just be about unrequited love, couldn't it? Not necessarily stalking. When you're obsessed with someone and they don't feel the same, it sure is a terrible mess. |

This is fantastic. You modest mouse fans deserve respect! I occasionally browse this site and I'm a little annoyed by people's half-baked analysis and generally dissing each other, but this discussion has really enhanced my hearing of this song, which I took at face value first of all. (Also I thought it was "he goes to the reservation, drinks some gasoline..." drinks and gets mean is much better.) What a bleak character sketch... Isaac's an amazing writer. |

I love this song, this was the first Modest Mouse song I heard and I was hooked on it for days and days, still put it on a lot. These comments are all very interesting... I reckon the song is partially about BINARY OPPOSITES in quite an abstract way, and about how seeing the world in terms of such binary opposites, drawing defining lines, can be destructive to ones holistic sense of self. E.g: *Heart & Brain* (rationality v irrationality), *Black & White* (Ravens and Seagulls) pushing each other *inward and outward*... i think of these birds as a metaphor for a narrowing and closing of your worldview in a search for a truth, pushing out unwanted thoughts and holding onto desired ones, trying to see the world in black and white, defined wrong/right, and thereby limiting your experiences of life and the thoughts that flow in and out of you. This is echoed in "trying to get my head clear: I push things out through my mouth and get refilled through my ears" which is one of the best lines for me. Also briefly put with: "a bad thought". [The lyric "absence versus thin air" is an interesting one if you look at the song with binary opposites in mind.] I guess overall it's about a feeling of being torn up, split up into warring parts that don't feel like they make a whole you. |
