What a great ode to the women who tamed the wild west alongside their men. She probably got the idea for this song from reading _Women's Diaries of the Westward Journey_, which is an excellent book about how women sold the homes they loved, packed up their possessions and children, and left their families for an unknown trip to California. |

This song is pretty cut and dried, but it is beautiful. Natalie has such a way with words that she can paint an entire picture in her song lyrics. |

| Nanci Griffith – Ghost In The Music Lyrics

This song is about two different generations--the earlier one that laid the foundations for America (railroad tracks, communication, commerce, etc.) and the later one that lives in different times and doesn't appreciate the sacrifices of those that came before. She seems to be blaming the younger generation, but things do change and what was once important is not so anymore. |

I prefer Griffin's version to the Dixie Chicks'. Her voice is just crystal clear. The song is about a man who neglects his children and his wife, and he regrets it after he dies. He didn't give her encouragement, he wasn't demonstrative where affections are concerned. The ending where she sings "top of the world" over and over always gives me chillbumps. |
