| Animal Collective – Did You See the Words Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Very sexual song. I agree with most of couldBanyone. Also something to note is the quote "though mine is messy yours is maybe nine". Though my sexual function as a man is messy, your function as a woman could mean nine months of pregnancy. Maybe I'm overanalyzing...but that's what I got. | |
| Pink Floyd – Time Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| A cool tidbit about this song...It was the first song used with copyright permission by Pink Floyd. It was used for a segment of a ski movie called "Daydreams" by Craig Beck. On their tour, Pink Floyd actually screened the segment of the movie in the background of their stage. This movie was filmed mostly in Squaw Valley, and being a skier in the area, I found this quite awesome. | |
| Bob Dylan – Ballad of a Thin Man Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
One thing that stuck out to me in this song, is that it revolves around a very normal man (like the first post mentioned Ph.D. and all that stuff) in a setting where HE is isolated. Mr. Jones is a very normal man who becomes extremely abnormal in an enviromnent with geeks, midgets, and sword swallowers. All these people he considers as lower class make sarcastic comments at him of his arrogance (you're a cow, give me some milk or else go home) and Mr. Jones doesn't really get it, though he knows "something is happening". I remember when I was younger I went with my family to the town of Berkeley, in California. I'd grown up in a nice, white community, and was incredibly naive. As we walked down the street I was gaping at a lady dressed in rags. This homeless guy with a long beard and scraggly clothes came up to me and said "she's cute ain't she?" Shocked, i responded "yea i guess". He then continued "Yea, I like to travel to 3rd world countries and take pictures of poor people and go home to watch them all. Poor people are adorable". It took me a couple of days to realize his incredible sardonicism and how he had been making fun of my naive arrogance. When I heard this song, the image of that man popped into my head. I don't think I could have understood it better at that point. |

| Deep Purple – Child In Time Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| wow....i misinterpreted many of Gillan's words. I thought it was "you can't get here by flying there" and "lying strong between good and bad". These lyrics make a lot more sense. I agree with the vietnam interpretations. They fit perfectly. Gillan is awesome. | |
| Deep Purple – When a Blind Man Cries Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
My favorite piece of recorded music is a live version of When a Blind Man Cries that begins with Barber's Adagio for Strings (Played by Jon Lord or an actual orchestra?). If you haven't heard that version, you really are missing out on a musical masterpiece. This song, I thought, was about loneliness. Ian Gillan uses the metaphor of himself being a blind man; not necessarily shut himself off from the rest of the world, but shut off by others for being blind. Gillan does mention this in Child in time, as die kleine Hexe mentioned. As I said, I believe the blind man to be a symbol of isolation and loneliness at the cruelty of the world. |
