Little Dragon – Twice Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with a lot of the interpretations about being town between two lovers. I think the video shows you the the girl knows she's happy and free with the bird, but the skeletal flutist just keeps her entranced. She can't be free with him, but when she's around him nothing else matters. She drops her present she took with her, losing herself to the skeleton once more, as he rains on their parade.

I think you're right VelvetSwan, the narrator is comforting someone, lifting them up with confidence, telling them to "run the mountain down". They can float with ease over the difficulty.

Little Dragon – Constant Surprises Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is just about listening to the universe around you. I think it's about coming to a level of awareness, talking to trees and reading minds. She talks about people thinking she's crazy, but she's dealing with fate, not chance.

Just Jack – Writer's Block Lyrics 18 years ago
That's a shame.

I love this song for everything it's worth.

What it means, to me, is living in illusions and pleasures, but not knowing for sure if you're glad you're alive, or came to be where you're at.

But then you get to see some truth in live, and you stop smoking, or living in fantasies. And since you're living in a real life, and you're making it, you know you can be glad to be alive.

Indigo Girls – Love Will Come to You Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't think this song is sarcastic at all. I think it's offering up a peace of love, but it's unbearable because whomever the person is writing about, when it refers to "she" that, this persons words won't fight her love (the paper tigers are no match for the predators inside her). The writer faces their own challenge of never having found the right love for themselves. Looking in on other's lives, and love being a shiny toy inside somewhere the person can't grasp it. The writer is wishing both of them love to be found, generously, but is expressing the painful realization at times, that words can't make it right, or happen.

Sara Bareilles – Bottle It Up Lyrics 18 years ago
I really do adore this song :) It's a nice take on love, one i fit with in some ways.

But, getting to the meaning, I think it's pretty clear. That despite everything, love is what makes the world go round, and everything else worth it. It's the only thing to be! Love :)

BNL is one of the few bands who actually capture the ways and things that I feel myself. Not just the "She's pretty! Song song singing" pop stuff that gets recorded and pushed for singles every day.

I've been listening to BNL for about 9 years myself too. This is still one of my favorite songs as well :)

New Order – Bizarre Love Triangle Lyrics 19 years ago
I've read all of these posts, and here's what I think personally:

Every time I see you falling
I get down on my knees and pray
I'm waiting for that final moment
You say the words that I can't say

OKAY! My favorite part! "Falling" is referring to the person the guy is talking about (we'll say it's a she), falling in love! He's hoping each time she starts a new crush, that it's finally HIM that she's falling for, and she'll finally say the words he's been waiting to tell her, but couldn't because she didn't return his feelings at the moment. Get it?!

The Postal Service – Brand New Colony Lyrics 20 years ago
By the way, someone listed the begining of the song as a revolver being loaded? I would actually take it as the sound of an old typewriter being used. Laura's business class she was attempting to take was a typing class, and she used to pretend she was practicing typing whenever her mother was around to keep up the image that she was still attending school.

The Postal Service – Brand New Colony Lyrics 20 years ago
You're write Saltysmyname. It is about the play, and unfortunitly there is a scene where Tom, this "gentlemen caller" sort of in an awkward fast momeent, without really thinking, and with having first met Laura, he is speaking to her and actually kisses Laura. After the kiss, he tells her that he can't call her, or see her, because he's this woman named Betty, who he's been seeing for some time and he's fallen in love with, and actually engaged to. Laura has had a defect on her leg, she walks with a sort of limp (at least, in the production my school is doing at this moment. I'm actually playing Laura for understudy. For those who don't know what understudy is, it's the second cast, who learn everything so they can do the part in case of an emergency, like someone falling ill or some freak accident at last minute).

So you're absolutely right, yes, it is about running away and starting a 'brand new colony', wanting to run away and starting a family with her. Tom when meeting her for the first and only time, notices her hesitation with strangers, and shyness to the outside world. Like eugy1026 said, she "is known to be alienated from society, and very old-fashioned and other than play with her glass collection she listens to old records on her phonograph all day long..." Tom feels for her and wants to open her up himself, and show her the world and get her to experience life. So, the perspective of this song is Tom actually WANTING and WILLING to run away with her, which might explain the use of

"We'll give ourselves new names,
Identites erased"

I hope that cleared some things up :)

Imogen Heap – I Am in Love with You Lyrics 20 years ago
Haha, to be honest, this song is me in a whole. I have the habit of 'easy to pick up, easy to drop.' Doesn't mean I can't hold feelings for a long time (I held a crush for 3 and a half years straight), it just means I can change my mind quickly! I can't help it. *shrugs* :)

Ahhh, but I love the lyric,
"No don't get yourself in situations
Darling that you can't handle"

Sounds like something I'd say. I always try to warn those who approach me beforehand, what exactly they're getting theirselves into. They usually chicken out :P

Totally good point faction. I hadn't thought of it quite that way. I heard this song a while ago, but my love for it grows all the time. It takes a talent artist to make something so gruesome sound so appealing :) ....or at least fun to sing along to

Haha, only BNL could come out with a song like this :)

Alright, well other people oculd too, but they're the only ones who would make it worth listening to. Their music is fantastic, I love it

Barenaked Ladies – Stomach Vs. Heart Lyrics 20 years ago
Of course, it can be taken a couple of ways. But reading the lyrics JUST now, it clicked! Perhaps the song is about eating a lot, and taking food in place of love. Kinda like the stereotypical girl eating a pint of ice cream when she gets dumped, just not so tragic.

I love the way Barenaked Ladies fiddles words arounds almost magically.

"And I always forget sometimes Y"

They make you question going, "eh?! Opt! But...does that mean? Which way do you mean it?!" lol

Tegan and Sara – I Know I Know I Know Lyrics 20 years ago
This song makes me cry.

"last night i was writing about you
i know my screaming and shouting
won't keep you
i know i know i know
you're still my love"

This sounds cliched and ridiculous perhpas, but that's exactly how I feel. My best friend and I are in love. We always come back to each other in some way, but we're out in our own lives as well. When I write something in my journal about him and get worked up, I slam down hard on myself because in the end I know writing about it isn't going to change anything. He also moved a while ago, so the rare chance that we get to see each other, the tone of our meetings are exactly like this song. We act all cool on the outside, pretending not to care, but inside we're singing, "I know, I know, I know, you're still my love"

Also the line,
"Tell them this love hasn't changed me at all
hasn't changed me at all"
describes both our stubbornness not to let the other know how much we really care.

My high school chorus is doing this song. Awwww :) I kept giggling because the first part we learned was the repeating "overwear underwear" part...god, I'm so immature! lol. Anyway, I like this song now, it makes me smile

Barenaked Ladies – In The Car Lyrics 20 years ago
The first time? Nah, I don't think she was his, 'first.' It was someone he seriously messed around with, nothing more. I don't think they went all the way because:

"Though we spoke of penatration, I'd have to wait for someone else to try it out"

and

"We were never making love"

Yeah, BNL is all about freaky songs, but that's what I like about 'em! And I had no idea it was mentioned on radio free roscoe?! I love that show

that's actually what i thought it was first too! i'm kind of in between. the literal part is really on, especially since the lyrics is "and we'll all be (portions for foxes)." And that fits much more with the video I suppose. Actually, I don't get the idea of the video that much...lol

Rilo Kiley – Portions for Foxes Lyrics 20 years ago
I actually quite dont agree Heather. I don't think it's about women and men being against each other, I think it's more about us all being portions of foxes, exactly like black courduroy said. I think this song is where both the people involved know that it's just a bad idea to get involved, but they just don't want to care, lol.
