Weezer – The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations on a Shaker Hymn) Lyrics 17 years ago
@Tiresias21: it could still be a reference to Macbeth, although I don't buy the rest of yoshiary's analysis.

Macbeth, Act 5, Scene 5:
Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

As You Like It does fit better, but this is evidently what yoshiary was thinking of. I think it's hilarious that Rivers (the English graduate he is) calls Shakespeare "somebody".

Yeah, ironandwine may well be on to something. A lot of people are talking about it being from a male perspective, with a 'girlfriend' etcetera. Of course, in the original, it's sung by a female singer.

Rather crappy words to live by I'd say scribblexsonnet. The whole point of those sentences is that there are *no* overarching guiding principles to live by - it's a statement of the postmodern loss of absolutes basically.

Cranberried: Duh. Of course that's what he's referring to.

Death Cab for Cutie – Why You'd Want to Live Here Lyrics 20 years ago
There's no way he doesn't hate LA. "You'd" is used in the general sense, so coming up with some excuse about someone moving there is pretty pointless. Notice that the one pronoun that *is* specific is "I" - he's really does hate the town.

What I find amusing is that you guys take it so personally. Just because you like a band doesn't mean you have to find a way to agree with everything they sing.

Actually, it seems to be followed by 'You Won't Get With Me Tonight', the lyrics to which begin when the subject of the bitch comment overhears:

1: Who you callin' bitch
2: Don't you listen to a word they say
3: They make me so mad
4: They don't matter to me anyway
