System of a Down – Sugar Lyrics 20 years ago
Hmm...why would they write a song simply "about drugs." There's more to it than "drugs." People seem to go "OH, DRUGS...those things" and then dismiss the topic because drug users are apparently insane. Society can be a drug we're all using. Have you ever thought of the nature of "sanity" and insanity"? How can you tell if you're sane?
I thought the video was amazing after finally watching it...the news reporter in the beginning kind of sums up the madness. He realizes that people rely on him to tell the truth through the TV when, in actuality, TV is a deceptive media device used to control the masses...the inner conflict of the news reporter is the inner conflict that exists in anyone in the system...this inner conflict is what the song is about.
"You know that every time I try to go
Where I really want to be,
It's already where I am,
Cause I'm already there"
Where are we really going with technology? Better technology for better, richer nations? We don't need it. It's all for wealth. It's all for privelaged people who want to add more drama to their soap operas they call life. We're already where we need to be...we've got the earth. what is the destination that we're getting at with war and technology?
People get caught up in it and go insane...
"My girl, you know, she lashes out at me sometimes,
And I just fucking kick her, and Ooo Baby, she's O.K."
ABuse in relationships is extremely common (extremely common?) in, well, America, for one. In the video, a cop says this part of the song. Our hostility towards those we are supposed to love stems from our hostile leaders, governors, law enforcers, etc. who claim they are just protecting and serving us. It's not just the leaders though, it's the whole system.
"In the end it all goes away"
The video ends with the atomic bomb explosion...Do the effects of nuclear war, or, any war, just go away? I think we act like it. Especially when we have nice clean bombs to just do away with the specific people we need to. "War, war we dont speak anymore of war." We kick around our friends and family and then say it's all ok. We use prayer (let your mother pray) as a mask for the lies, pretending that it magically protects us, that we wage war "In God's name," and that we don't have to consciously live out faith in Goodness.
It's not that ALL people are like this, but anyone who's raised by the corporate landscape feeding them promises of love. Saying you'll be liked if you buy this or that. i think i'm rambling now.
I love system of a down so much.

System of a Down – Prison Song Lyrics 20 years ago
I like the first verse: "following the rights movements you clamped down with your iron fists." After the movement in the 60s which involved a lot of protestors who happened to take a lot of drugs. GOvernments hate mind expanding substances because they allow people to think for themselves and oppose the government, so they crack down on em.
On the outside, they act like they want to protect us and our children from the drugs and drug users, yet they cash in on the criminal activity and keep it going. They use it as another way to keep the rich rich...FOr example, in African countries, there are dictators who are sponsored by western corporations and drug money, and we claim to be spreading freedom and democracy. Meanwhile, we are just kept ignorant of what consciousness altering drugs should and should not be used for. Instead of given facts about the benefits of safe drug use, we're told they're all bad and will end up in prison if we do them.
