I wrote this song after I read about all the priests in the Catholic Church that molested young children. The reason I named it “the need for repetition” is because this is the only song we repeat a lot of parts, and also because it has a message that needs to be repeated in society’s brain- don’t molest young children, simple as that.

This song is about how selfish and confused everyone are… it seems like one day you can be the happiest person in the world and the next day you hate everything for some odd reason. We take everything we have for granted (trust me, I’m in the same boat)… and no matter how much shit sucks for each one of us…there are always worse off people and we need to always keep that in mind… this song goes out to everyone that I’m friends with and spent quality time with… you make life amazing. The title “Mordecai” is from the birds name in “The Royal Tenenbaums”… I chose this name because in the movie, Luke Wilson kept Mordecai around because he loved it… and he finally realized that the bird needed to be on its own in the wild (the idea of freeing yourself).
I get emails all the time about the word “shevanel and plip”… it’s actually a very bizarre story: there is a homeless man in Raleigh, Nc named “shevanel” and he has a pet dog named “plip”… yeah I know that’s probably the weirdest thing you have ever heard, but it is true. “Shevanel” seemed to always be happy every time I saw him, and it amazed me that someone with so little could be so stoked on life. Life is confusing and horrible at times but doing the things we love can make it the best thing on this planet.

We used to always rent cargo vans when we toured… and that’s what the first and last sections of this song refer too. We would just sit in the back (no windows) and be bored out of our minds thinking about who knows what. This song is about a dream involving a baby born on the last day of the earth.

This song is about George Bush… enough said. The very end speaks of my confusion when it comes to political views… it’s a very double-sided issue and sometimes I honestly don’t think or care about things… I know it’s shitty but true. I just try to stay happy, and not worry about the world’s problems. I speak of “mordecai” again because that section is about confusion (you’ll understand if you read the explanation for “mordecai”.

This song is about mainstream music and how it’s more about sexual image rather than quality music. Our media and society would rather listen to an artist that gets naked on the screen rather than a boring artist who writes wonderful music. Many of these artists have a huge young following and their image just suggests that the only way person can succeed in society is to be sexual to the public eye. I know it’s a fucked up world, and don’t get me wrong, I enjoy sexual imagery as much as anyone, but I don’t think it needs to be such an accessible product for young children. The children see this sex and they think that this is what needs to be done in order be accepted, and we all know children should not look like hookers and should not have intercourse when they are 10 years old. Between the buried and me does not and will never have a certain image. We are just five normal dudes that try to write the best possible music that we can. This song goes out to all the bands that stick to their music and fans rather than an image. The title of the song is from the movie “Mulholland Drive” by David Lynch. See the movie to understand how it relates to this song.

As weird as it seems this song is about the Titanic (yes the ship). The band supposedly kept playing while the boat was sinking, and that is the biggest dedication to music I could ever think of. If I were to die today I would love to spend my last moments either playing music or enjoying some of my favorite artists. This song is a dedication to all the music we create, our fans and anyone who is truly in love with music.

This song is a dedication to “noise”. Noise can be anything in our natural environment. It’s the same concept that the musical “Stomp” speaks of: music can become beautiful from anything in nature. Heavy music to the normal person is nothing but an annoyance… but to those who really listen to it understand how amazing and beautiful songs can become no matter how “noisy” they seem. The first section of the song I don’t actually sing any lyrics… I just scream (noise) random bullshit… that influenced the last line (you can’t follow me, you sing along to nothing). The song title is actually a random message our old guitarist nick wrote in my phone… and being a made up word I thought it would fit nicely with the idea of noise.
