*claps for BeMyUnholy* I would've never picked out crickets but that's definitely what it is, thank you. It was driving me crazy.

Fall Out Boy – Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown on a Bad Bet Lyrics 17 years ago
A woman is cheating on her husband with the speaker in this song. He falls in love with her and thinks she'd never turn on him like she did on her husband (even though she is already cheating on him as well). She plays on his feelings to get what she wants ("oh darlin' I know what you're going through").

Fall Out Boy – Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown on a Bad Bet Lyrics 17 years ago
What it sounds like to me (I still can't make out all of it either and I'm not certain on what I've written; I don't want to send in a wrong/incomplete report. sorry):

mr. sandman showing his beam
when he walks into the room the walls lean in to listen
serve out bright waves click back and forth
like old headlights sniffing all of you again

head like a steel trap
I wish
i didn't(x8)
I don't
just want to be a footnote
in someone else's happiness

does your husband know the way that
the sunshine gleams from your wedding band?
does he know the way
does he know the way
all the (tricks?) that would convince me to call it a night

I will never end up like him
behind my back, I already am
keep a calendar this way you will always know
the last time you came through
"oh darlin', I know what you're going through"
the last time you came through
oh darlin' (x3)

(ahh) [temptress/tempest] in a [d-cup/teacup]
get unique
of a rockstar princess shine like [shark/sharp] teeth
it's a sign (x4)
what if it peaks early?

does your husband know the way that
the sunshine gleams from your wedding band?
does he know the way
does he know the way
all the (tricks?) that would convince me to call it a night

does he, does he know the way to worship all of you?
does your husband know the way that
the sunshine gleams from your wedding band?

But I will never end up like him
behind my back I already am
keep a calendar this way you will always know
the last time you came through
"Oh darlin', I know what you're going through"
the last time you came through
oh darlin' (x4)

Oh
does your husband know(x3)
does he know (x3)
Oh, oh, oh

But I will never end up like him
behind my back I already am
keep a calendar this way you will always know
Oh, the last time you came through
"oh darlin', I know what you're going through"
the last time you came through
"oh darlin, I know what you're going through"

Jason Mraz – Geek In The Pink Lyrics 18 years ago
Geek in the Pink is wordplay - yeah, it can mean "I'm wearing a pink shirt" but it doesn't - it's the same "Pink" Aerosmith went on about at least a decade ago (vagina).

Likewise, "It's laundry day!" could mean literally that he's doing laundry and he made everything pink. Haven't you all heard the phrase "airing your dirty laundry" though? That's what he's really saying - that he's about to spend a song talking about his issues with his girl.

I love how Mraz plays on words and phrases and how almost every song he has includes some sort of innuendo.

My Chemical Romance – This Is How I Disappear Lyrics 19 years ago
I 100% agree with _dilemma_. Gerard admits himself that most all of these songs were written before the concept of a black parade and a patient ever came to him (it's in his introduction to the book in the limited edition). Meanings of the songs are just twisted to fit that - that's why it's so hard to make sense of it as all belonging to the Patient storyline. Still don't believe me?

"As we tracked the story got tighter and tighter but also I noticed the layers started to strip away, the fiction and metaphor of everything started to fade and what was left by the end of the record was something very naked, something very honest and very obvious...We were these characters. It was our story we were telling." - Gerard Way, from the introduction to The Making the Black Parade LE book.

I had heard before that early in writing, this song started out being about Houdini's wife after his death and how she held seances trying to contact him.

I think the final song is about the death of a relationship. I really think the lines "things that I have done you never should ever know" and "drowns all the boys and girls inside your bed" imply cheating. "I'm just a ghost" doesn't mean he's acutally dead, he's just "not so with" the person anymore physically/mentally.

My Chemical Romance – The Ghost of You (Reverse) Lyrics 19 years ago
For all those who want the software to play songs backwards:

Download a free program called Audacity here: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

then open a song in the program, select all, and pick "reverse" from under Effect. Works for me; hope it helps you! :)

My Chemical Romance – My Way Home Is Through You Lyrics 19 years ago
hmm. This song is hard to get one meaning for as it seems to jump through a few different ones, but I think maybe I've got something.

I think it's about getting to the point where you've toured and interviewed and everything so much that you're not even really sure who you are anymore. "The way home" can either be literal or mean the way to get back to your true self.

It's also about the fans who look to the band to "save them" since their parents don't do anything besides throw prescriptions at their problems. Knowing someone looks up to you in that way has to be inspiring but also stressful - helping these fans brings them closer to feeling whole but they've still got fangirls who would leave them "lying here" the second something new comes along.

The "we're not here to pay a compliment" verse is a response to people wondering if they were going to get more political on this album - they're not; it's not their style. It's also saying don't look too deep into these lyrics - the song is about them (and us); not any sort of commentary on the world.

In the end, who is the "way home" actually through? I don't think it ends up being the fans - I think it was people who cared about them before all of this started and they just wanted to get back to that (especially if this song was written during their stay at the Paramour - "WE'VE GOT TO GO"). I think he is referring to a relationship with a girlfriend that got strained through distance. "what I'd do just to get back in your arms...c'mon angel, don't you cry"

I think that's everything except the "seven different shades of shit" part, which could just be how some people will react negatively to their music no matter what they do - they will see it all as crap without giving it a chance because it's "emo" and not hard/punk/rock/whatever enough (which is amusing considering that this is probably one of their punkiest songs).

My Chemical Romance – Kill All Your Friends Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with xXbUlLeTsXx except I don't think it's necessarily a girl. Doesn't have to be a love thing.

"If this is a coronation I ain't feeling the love" - everyone loves these people now that they've gained success except the speaker.

This is probably a weird way of looking at it, but if you look into the future a bit - it could totally make sense from the point of view of Matt Pelissier (ex-drummer) talking about them.

Yellowcard – Sure Thing Falling Lyrics 20 years ago
It's actually "vampires and hit list radio" (I think I would've liked it better if it was "hitless", but oh well.) At first, I thought that line was totally random, but perhaps it's a tiny shot at the music industry - it doesn't matter what's in right now in the long run, because what's popular in music will surely shift and fall like everything else. Nothing is forever. Kind of like they're saying "we'll play whatever we want to now and not worry about it, because in the end it doesn't matter."

I agree with on the "He can take you all the way to church this time" line.

Yellowcard – Two Weeks From Twenty Lyrics 20 years ago
For starters, I want to be clear that I have no problem with dnask8's opinions. Everyone's entitled to think what they want; the post just would've been more effective if he didn't keep assuming that everyone here was a "dumb fuck." That took it beyond debate and into flaming. (And yes, I voted in the last election.)

Anyway, regardless of your stance on the war, I didn't expect to see everyone up at arms over the lyrics "All he had was a line for his name/ So he could sign away his right to be proud." I interpreted these lines differently. Part of the goal of military training is to break down the individual so you can build up the group. You can't successfully fight a war if every soldier is sitting there thinking only of himself and of his own ideas of what should be done. I took "his right to be proud" as self-pride and self-focus, not national pride. Signing up for the military made Jimmy part of a mass of soldiers instead of an individual, which is good for the purposes of war. If I'm incorrect in the meaning here, then I am sorry and I understand why people are upset - saying that signing up for war takes away pride in your country is asinine.

However, I fail to see the connection between this song and the abuse of Vietnam era soldiers. The problem then was that protestors took their hatred of the war out on drafted soldiers. This song isn't saying that the war is Jimmy's fault - it's giving a face to the casualties of war. All we hear on television is "four troops died today." These people have names, and their deaths impact everyone they know.

Yes, this song is anti-Bush. Yes, this song is anti-war. This is all obvious. But is not against the individual soldier.

The main theme of this song is war, but it also has another theme that no one has mentioned yet - there are few job opportunities in this country for those who do not complete college. ("Jimmy never had a reason to stay/ Cause all the factories shut down"). This is a very real problem - I've seen it worsening in the past few years in my hometown. There's too many people and too few jobs to fill. Even those who do complete a degree may face difficulty in securing a job, depending on their field of interest.

As for the sound of the song itself, I wasn't really impressed. Don't flame me, I'm not a Yellowcard-hater, I just don't care as much for this song.

Sorry that was pretty long. If you have anything to add or anything you disagree with me about, I'll gladly read your response. :)

Nickelback – Photograph Lyrics 20 years ago
This doesn't make sense to me as a graduation/prom song. I suppose the general feeling works for that, but not the lyrics. It's not about when you're first leaving a town. It's about looking back years after leaving and finally letting go, keeping your memories but realizing you can never go back to the way things were.

Relient K – The Only Thing Worse Than Beating A Dead Horse Is Betting On One Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree with leibherk that this song is political. I think the title is a reference to voting; we place our votes (bets) on politicians who can't really listen to their hearts and do what they feel is right; instead they have to go along with whatever their respective political parties say. Politicians/the government are "dead horses."
