Manic Street Preachers – Australia Lyrics 20 years ago
Bradfield went to Australia to clean himself up after almost becoming an alcoholic following Edwards disappearance.

Manic Street Preachers – Motown Junk Lyrics 20 years ago
Which is odd because I always thought that actually liked a lot of Motown - particularly Bradfield. Though by the time the single came out Motown was hardly putting out stuff of the caliber of its golden age.

Manic Street Preachers – La Tristesse Durera (Scream To A Sigh) Lyrics 20 years ago
Its about peoples lives and their contribution to society not being recognised or appreciated - this links the Van Gogh and veterans references.

Manic Street Preachers – Roses In The Hospital Lyrics 20 years ago
An ode to self abuse. The riff is a straight pinch from David Bowie's "Sorrow" and fade out almost Hey Jude-esque which shows they could pretty much wear their influences on there sleeves. The title is also lifted from a line from the film Times Square which links to Damn Dog from the first album. Their most effective stab at a pop song before Everything Must Go.

Manic Street Preachers – Damn Dog Lyrics 20 years ago
It comes from the American film Times Square about punk rock. It is the tale of a middle class girl and a waster befriending one another after being admitted to hospital and forming a fictional group called the Sleez Sisters.

Another Manics reference to this film comes in the form of "Roses in the Hospital". Its a line in the film that I think relates to some kind of fictional punk rock song though on second thoughts it may be a reference to when the waster girl eats a rose belonging to the middle class girl when in hospital.

A marvellous film so please don't the Manics rather poor cover put you off investigating it!

Manic Street Preachers – She Is Suffering Lyrics 20 years ago
Female menstration. And a very misogynistic song at that.

Manic Street Preachers – Faster Lyrics 20 years ago
I think the title is the most intriguing thing about the song. Is it "Faster" in terms of speed and motion or is it "Faster" in terms of one who starves themself?

Joy Division – Decades Lyrics 20 years ago
Basically, Decades is Joy Division the Las Vegas years. This is not as glib an assesment as it sounds. Taking Closer as a whole, the first side is a man debating with himself whether or not to make the ultimate sacrifice ending in A Means to an End and the taking of his life. Heart and Soul is the immediate aftermath of death, Twenty Four Hours is coming to terms with grief, The Eternal is the funeral and Decades is twenty years later.

Decades looks back at what could have been and what actually happened. Decades is very much in the spirit of "its better to burn out than fade away". Rather than grow old disgracefully and become a parody of him/themself Decades celebrates the implosion of what Curtis final act meant for the group both creatively and enigmatically.

Its with some irony that 21 years on from Curtis death, New Order "reformed" and for the first time since Joy Division actually started playing their songs at their gigs. Perhaps Curtis was right all along...
