| @[MMFB2001:12464] - You really need to lighten up! Pouring out bile at somebody you've never met over the meaning of a pop song is not conducive to a long and contented life. And if your interpretation of British history matters that much to you, I'd suggest you take it up with Mr Costello. Peace out. | |

Blimey @[MMFB2001:7084] (is that your real name by the way?) I've been insulted before but this is the first time it has taken somebody 9 years to get their dig in. Where did you get your manners from? Borstal? I based my comment on what I was taught in school (as I'm guessing did Mr McManus who went to school not far from me). I will bow to your superior historical knowledge (I'm assuming it's superior to my Grade B 'O' Level - you certainly "sound" superior), but I think it's probably still a fair comment that the New Model Army was the first British army to resemble the modern army. Although I'm sure you'll disagree. But two further points: 1) This is songmeanings.net. I'm not expecting anybody to quote me in a reference for an academic paper on the Civil War, so I didn't really feel the need to check all my facts that thoroughly; and 2) I got my education from Oxford University actually (in Physics) Anyway - lighten up. |

| Lazy historians like the man who wrote the song and said "Oliver" was Oliver Cromwell? You may be right about the term being used in 1974 - I don't know - but even if it was, there is no question that Costello uses the phrase to refer to Cromwell. | |

| Powerful stuff as usual from the Boss - but slightly undermined by a lifted hook from A Flock of Seagulls. | |

Possibly because it obviously is about Oliver Cromwell, or possibly because Elvis has said it's about Oliver Cromwell. And it isn't an 80s song, it dates back to the 70s (pre-Thatcher government). |

I'm sure gummomohawk will be devestated at getting shot down in flames over 5 years after giving his/her interpretation! I may prefer your interpretation over gummomohawk's but is there really any need for the abuse? |
