I think it's about him leaving Lowell, which he describes as being old and crumbling (because Lowell is full of old building dating back to the Industrial Revolution). Driving away as he leaves, the skyscrapers disappear into the horizon, the radio stations are turning to static, and he's leaving Lowell behind. Agreeing with a previous comment, this song really does describe the song well. Lowell seems so out of place in norther MA. It's so rich in culture and so urban when the surrounding towns are, well, country cow towns such as dracut with absolutly nothing to do (speaking from experience.) |

I've heard that it's supposed to be a break-up song, however, I think it's leaning more towards a "lets work it out." It's really about this guy who refuses to promise his loved one unrealistic things (the world, forever, ect) because he knows it's not in his power. "I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden along with the sunshine there's got to be a little rain sometimes when you take you got to give so live and let live or let go" (I'm sorry, I never promised you the perfect relationship. We've had some good times, but there has to be a few bad times, too. When you take, you have to give back, so just deal with it and keep going on with your life.) "I could promise you things like big diamond rings but you don't find roses growing on stocks of clover so better think it over Well if sweet talking you would make it come true I'd give you the world right now on a silver platter but what would it matter" (I could give you material items, but I may not be able to keep these unrealistic promises If all you ever wanted was sweet talk, I'd promise you the world, but in all seriousness, I really can't give you that) "So smile for a while and let's be jolly love shouldn't be so melancholy come along and share the good times while we can." (Cheer up, we're in love, we shouldn't be so sad.
